Q 47.09

Connect the following (please pardon some spelling variation; the list is exhaustive):

Aditya. --Suresh Purohit (Su_hit) (talk) 04:09, 13 October 2012 (UTC)
No, the answer is not aditya. The answer actually has two parts. In the first part, you have to guess each of the above names; in the second part, you have to tie those names by a single characteristic. If the above clues are too vague, I will gradually unfurl.--Dwaipayan (talk) 06:30, 13 October 2012 (UTC)
More clue please. --Suresh Purohit (Su_hit) (talk) 11:32, 13 October 2012 (UTC)
Clue 1-- people belonging to the clan in question can either be Hindu or Muslim, although traditionally we usually think the clan to be a Hindu one. The royal title described is most prevalent actually within that clan, and also in some mountainous region of the subcontinent.--Dwaipayan (talk) 12:13, 13 October 2012 (UTC)
Is that clan Nanda ? -- Raghith 12:34, 13 October 2012 (UTC)
no, not Nanda. Let me somewhat rephrase this. The clan I am talking about is not such a smal clan, it is indeed a large group of smaller clans. So, the "clan" in question actually is a larger and well-known term that comprises several smaller lesser-known clans, almost like a caste (indeed I am not sure what is the exact definition of such a large group of people, and did not find a universal term in my search). To compensate this ambiguity, let me add another clue-- this group originates from north western part of modern India geography.--Dwaipayan (talk) 15:04, 13 October 2012 (UTC)
A long shot, the clan I guess is Jat people the royal title is Chaudhary and MTV VJ might be Ran Vijay. Have no idea about other connects so I will go with Chaudhary Charan Singh --sarvajna (talk) 21:08, 13 October 2012 (UTC)
The clan/group is incorrect. Ranvijay is correct for the MTV vj. --Dwaipayan (talk) 02:57, 14 October 2012 (UTC)
next clue-- the Bollywood villain was born in Amritsar.--Dwaipayan (talk) 00:06, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
Singh or Sardar. --Suresh Purohit (Su_hit) (talk) 03:56, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
No, not Singh or Sardar. The clan/group is historically noted for fighting/war capabilities.--Dwaipayan (talk) 04:39, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
clan-Rajput,royal title-Randhawa, actor(villain roles)-Ranjeet,Kapoor family member-Ranbir Kapoor ? -- Raghith 06:00, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
It seems I got it. Rajput, Rana, Ranjit, Ranvir, Ranvijay. Rajput class destroyer ships of Indian Navy. Link. --Suresh Purohit (Su_hit) (talk) 10:49, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
Yes, its Rajput, Rana, Ranjit, Ranvir and Ranvijay -- the Rajput class destroyers of Indian Navy.
Suhit has got the perfect answer, although Raghith almost reached there, but he failed to make the connection. Now, the points may be divided among SuHit and Raghith, perhaps in 0.75 and 0.25 fashion, respectively. What do you think?--Dwaipayan (talk) 12:28, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
Excellent question, really good Dwaipayan --sarvajna (talk) 12:36, 15 October 2012 (UTC)

Q 47.10

Taking re-inspiration from PINQ, let me frame a question which has blend of few different elements.........

The largest/biggest/famous/oldest of ‘A’ can be found in Kolkata, Bengaluru and a town in Gujarat apart from many other parts of India. The term ‘B’ used for businessman is said to be derived from ‘A’. ‘A’ was also a part of logo of an organization ‘C’, before it changed to new one. The name of Organization ‘C’ is derived from the name of founder ‘D’. Identify A, B, C and D. --Suresh Purohit (Su_hit) (talk) 03:50, 16 October 2012 (UTC)
A is banyan tree, B is Bania, C is most likely Dabur, and D is Dr S. K. Burman.--Dwaipayan (talk) 04:23, 16 October 2012 (UTC)
'E' stands for Excellent. Dwaipayan gets it right. C = Dabur is derived from 'Da' of 'Daktar' and 'bur' of 'Burman'. One of the largest trees is in Kolkata, Benguluru has Doda Alada Mara, Gujarat got it in Kabirvad. --Suresh Purohit (Su_hit) (talk) 10:15, 16 October 2012 (UTC)

Q 47.11

"A" was a noted (though not very famous) author. His daughter, "B", had a few firsts to her credit in journalism, and was a first to achieve a feat in Egypt. "C", who is "A"'s granddaughter, is noted nationally in several fields including sports. Identify these personalities.--Dwaipayan (talk) 17:12, 16 October 2012 (UTC)

B= Prabha Dutt, C= Barkha Dutt --Suresh Purohit (Su_hit) (talk) 03:56, 17 October 2012 (UTC)
No, that's not what I am looking for. --Dwaipayan (talk) 06:04, 17 October 2012 (UTC)
Small clue please. --Suresh Purohit (Su_hit) (talk) 10:38, 17 October 2012 (UTC)
Clue: "A" wrote mainly in Bengali. "B" was a champion of feminism. "C" was noted for her beauty.--Dwaipayan (talk) 11:00, 17 October 2012 (UTC)
S. Wajid Ali a Bengali writer and nationalist. His daughter Zaib-un-Nissa Hamidullah was a pioneer of Pakistani literature and journalism in English, and also a pioneer of feminism in Pakistan. She won the Miss India title in 1976 and was runner-up at the Miss International contest in 1977. Ali was also a jockey at the Calcutta Gymkhana in 1979. -- Raghith 11:15, 18 October 2012 (UTC)

Y Right answer Dwaipayan. Waiting for next question.-- Raghith 16:38, 23 October 2012 (UTC)
Next Q please. --Suresh Purohit (Su_hit) (talk) 14:48, 25 October 2012 (UTC)

Q 47.13

Sorry for the delay, was busy in real life. Plus, could not think of a good question. So, posting a bad question.

Connect Vande Mataram with tiger conservation.

This would be a multi-step connection. The answer that I have in my mind has at least 4 intermediate steps to connect the two. However, other ways of connection may be possible. Will consider such answers if seems reasonable.--Dwaipayan (talk) 23:02, 25 October 2012 (UTC)

Connect could be Goddess Durga. Vande Mataram is composed to praise Goddess Durga. While tiger conservation is lead in India by Fateh Singh Rathore, who has opined to differ that let forest grow without correlation that Goddess Durga rides on tiger. --Suresh Purohit (Su_hit) (talk) 11:39, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
First, I was not looking for this connect (though that is not very important, as explained in the question). Second, Goddess Durga actually rides a lion. I could not understand the linking through Rathore. Anyway, I would wait for better guesses.--Dwaipayan (talk) 14:03, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
Clue 1. The connection-series that I have in mind has at least one geographical location. --Dwaipayan (talk) 17:06, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
Perhaps Vande Mataram -> Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay -> Anandmath -> Sunderbans -> Sunderban Tiger Reserve[1] -> Tiger Conservation? --HarshAJ (Talk)(Contribs) 02:06, 27 October 2012 (UTC)
You may consider my answer too. Vande Mataram -> first time sung -> Kolkata (1896). Indian zoos bred tigers first time in the world at Alipore Zoo at Kolkata. So 'first' at 'Kolkata'. --Suresh Purohit (Su_hit) (talk) 04:14, 27 October 2012 (UTC)
The connect given by Suresh (Vandemataram, Kolkata etc) is relatively more off track. The connect given by Harsh is considerable. However, I am not sure if Anandamath mentioned Sunderban significantly (I read Anandamath many years ago, and can not remember). However, this is not the pattern of connection that I had in my mind. If no one else can give better connection, definitely I would consider Harsh's answer as the closest possible.
Clue 2. Two clues actually. Besides Bankim Chandra, there is another personality in the connection-series. And the geographic location is not Sunderban.--Dwaipayan (talk) 05:27, 27 October 2012 (UTC)
Vande Mataram ,Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay,Sanjeeb Chandra Chattopadhyay(Brother of Bankim),Palamau (Novel)(Sanjeeb's Novel),Palamau District,Palamau Tiger Reserve,Project Tiger. -- Raghith 07:47, 27 October 2012 (UTC)

Excellent! Raghith got it. Palamau tiger reserve is apparently the first tiger reserve in the country. Sanjeeb Chandra Chattopadhyay's only notable work is Palamau, a travelogue based on the Palamau forest area.--Dwaipayan (talk) 14:08, 27 October 2012 (UTC)

But you told C is Japanese in the clue; so how can it be Deming? Was he a Japanese citizen?--Dwaipayan (talk) 13:09, 2 November 2012 (UTC)
Raghith you are closer to 'A'. Dwaipayan, it's my partial mistake. Deming is an American but worked significantly in Japan. Apologies for little confusion. --Suresh Purohit (Su_hit) (talk) 02:05, 3 November 2012 (UTC)
Kumar Mangalam Birla ? -- Raghith 04:24, 3 November 2012 (UTC)

Yes, Pakistan was the country where she temporarily migrated.--Dwaipayan (talk) 04:27, 17 November 2012 (UTC)
Zeenat Aman --Suresh Purohit (Su_hit) (talk) 08:10, 17 November 2012 (UTC)
No. Wrong answer. I see that one son of Zeenat Aman is interested in acting. But did she migrate to Pakistan?--Dwaipayan (talk) 15:41, 17 November 2012 (UTC)
Begum Para. Her son Ayub Khan is a TV actor. --Suresh Purohit (Su_hit) (talk) 01:54, 18 November 2012 (UTC)
Yes, that's correct. Your turn.--Dwaipayan (talk) 05:18, 18 November 2012 (UTC)

Q 47.22

  • A = The patriarch of Mumbai, passed away in 2012.
  • B = Leader of opposition of a Legislative Assembly in India.
  • C = 1996: A mumbai-based very respected-trusted business conglomerate, 2001: D, 2009 = E.
D had a special privilege of associated with Gandhi, Shastri & Nehru. E is headed by B. F is the common factor amongst A, B and C. The core question is to identify 'F'. Identification of 'A' to 'E' carries less weightage. --Suresh Purohit (Su_hit) (talk) 04:57, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
A = Bal Thackeray, C= Bajaj Group? -- Raghith 09:34, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
Yes, A is correct. C is a person. --Suresh Purohit (Su_hit) (talk) 14:26, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
Having some difficulty understanding the question, probably due to some confusion in using punctuation marks. If Eis headed by B, what does 2009=E mean? Also, what does 2001:D stand for? C=1996: a Mumbai based.. Does that mean C become a businessman in 1996? Please clarify.--Dwaipayan (talk) 17:07, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
I welcome your query. Person 'C' has joined various organization in 1996, 2001 and 2009. Hope, it clarifies. Clue2: 'D' is a financial institution. 'E' is a non-profit governing body of India. 'B' belongs to BJP. Person 'C' is born during 1970-1975. --Suresh Purohit (Su_hit) (talk) 03:57, 20 November 2012 (UTC)
Clue3: Person 'B' is a veteran (around 82 years old). 'D' is a bank. 'E' is associated with sports. --Suresh Purohit (Su_hit) (talk) 11:45, 20 November 2012 (UTC)
Clue4: Person 'C' is a sportsman/sportsperson of national cadre and born in Rajasthan. The irony is that he/she was homeless few years back. --Suresh Purohit (Su_hit) (talk) 09:08, 21 November 2012 (UTC)
B=Vijay Kumar Malhotra , C=Limba Ram ? -- Raghith 04:12, 22 November 2012 (UTC)
Absolutely correct Raghith. Now, it's time to unearthen the connection amongst A, B and C. --Suresh Purohit (Su_hit) (talk) 06:37, 22 November 2012 (UTC)
Clue5: Think of Symbol. I believe it should be easy now. --Suresh Purohit (Su_hit) (talk) 12:29, 23 November 2012 (UTC)
F is bow and arrow. That is the symbol of Shivsena. Limba Ram is an archer. Vijay Malhotra is the president of the Archery Association of India.--Dwaipayan (talk) 15:19, 23 November 2012 (UTC)

Dwaipayan hits the target and grabs the baton for next Q. D = Punjab National Bank, where Nehru, Gandhiji and Shastri kept their bank accounts. E = Archery Association of India. As 'F' carried more weightage hence, Dwaipayan is credited with 0.5 points and Raghith as 0.5 points. --Suresh Purohit (Su_hit) (talk) 04:49, 24 November 2012 (UTC)

Q 47.23

Connect the following: two (mainly) Tamil heroes, one literary magazine from New England, a film starring Nana Patekar, one theatre based in Mumbai, a film starring Uttam Kumar. Some spelling variation may be there (minor), and the list may not be exhaustive, that is there may be more in the series.--Dwaipayan (talk) 06:59, 26 November 2012 (UTC)

Agni Pariksha --Suresh Purohit (Su_hit) (talk) 08:42, 26 November 2012 (UTC)
Although Agni Pariksha was not in my mind, it has striking thematic similarity with the names I am looking for. The individual things I asked for has different and independent names; then each name will be thematically somehow connected.--Dwaipayan (talk) 21:04, 26 November 2012 (UTC)
AGNI (magazine),Agni Sakshi, Surya Sakshi . -- Raghith 04:26, 27 November 2012 (UTC)
That is actually great going Raghith! You have got the magazine correct. --Dwaipayan (talk) 04:45, 27 November 2012 (UTC)
Names of Missiles developed by India. In the sequence of question: Dhanush, Surya, Agni, Prahaar, Prithvi, Nirbhay. --Suresh Purohit (Su_hit) (talk) 05:49, 27 November 2012 (UTC)
SuHit gets it. Surface-to-surface ballistic missiles in India. Dhanush, Surya (both Tamil heroes), Agni (magazine), Prahaar (Nana Patekar film), Prithvi (Prithvi theatre) and Sagarika (Uttam Kumar film). --Dwaipayan (talk) 13:04, 27 November 2012 (UTC)
Nice and tough Question. Good one Dwaipayan. I shall post next Q. --Suresh Purohit (Su_hit) (talk) 04:30, 28 November 2012 (UTC)

Q 47.24

It is about usage of same titles of Hindi films. An actor made debut (as an adult actor) by film having same title, which was again used by him 10 years later. So far such three Hindi films are produced, obviously one has not featured this actor as it was released before his birth. Identify the title. --Suresh Purohit (Su_hit) (talk) 04:33, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

Actor is Bobby Deol. film title is Barsaat (1949, 1995 and 2004).--Dwaipayan (talk) 05:38, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
Quick and clear answer by none other than Dwaipayan. Over to him for last Q of the round. --Suresh Purohit (Su_hit) (talk) 06:27, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

Q 47.25

There were at least three such things, A, B and C, "based" on three cities. A large establishment, X, opted to use B for convenience. Although the other two cities had to follow to some extent X's decision, they continued to use A and C as well. Decades later, all these entities were abandoned. At present, these entities are totally annihilated. Those three cities still follow similar entity D, but none can claim the entity as their own.Identify A, B, C, D and X.--Dwaipayan (talk) 18:08, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

A = Siri, B = Old Delhi, C = Tughlaqabad, D = Delhi --Suresh Purohit (Su_hit) (talk) 04:02, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
No. These things (A, B etc) are not cities , but certain things/entities.--Dwaipayan (talk) 04:20, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
Any connection with Jaipur? -- Raghith 06:34, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
Is it connected to Tripura? --Suresh Purohit (Su_hit) (talk) 07:23, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
No Jaipur or Tripura.--Dwaipayan (talk) 12:25, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
Clue 1. D, which is currently functional, has an alternative name promulgated by an international organization specializing in certain aspects of the internet. That alternative name, incidentally, has a mention of the city on which C was "based".--Dwaipayan (talk) 15:26, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
Has this got to do with Indian Standard Time? Calcutta, Madras, and Bombay are A, B, and C. X is the Indian government. And D is Mirzapur. Cribananda (talk) 00:08, 1 December 2012 (UTC)
Lovely Question. --Suresh Purohit (Su_hit) (talk) 03:56, 1 December 2012 (UTC)
Welcome back Cribananda! You seem to be here after ages!!
It is indeed the correct answer. A is Bombay Time, B Madras Time, C Calcutta time. D is IST. X, I thought, Indian Railways (but government is acceptable I guess). The alternative name for IST is Asia/Kolkata under IANA time zone database.--Dwaipayan (talk) 04:34, 1 December 2012 (UTC)
Thank you Dwaipayan. I haven't been around much at all, so I'm a bit lost here. Does this end the round? Am I supposed to start a new round? Cribananda (talk) 04:47, 1 December 2012 (UTC)
As a matter of fact, I was also absent for years. Yes, this round is over, and you are supposed to start the new round. Play around here a little bit, if you can figure out how to start a new round. Otherwise, the regulars like Suresh can help us to set the stage for the next round, and you will ask the first question.--Dwaipayan (talk) 05:10, 1 December 2012 (UTC)
Thanks Suresh and Dwaipayan. If someone doesn't mind taking over the next question I would appreciate it. I am very busy next couple of days but I'll be back with a question after that. Sorry. Cribananda (talk) 22:57, 1 December 2012 (UTC)
