Talk:Cathedral City, California

edit

The article quotes the 1939 item from Ripley's Believe It or Not regarding the lack of any churches in Cathedral City, and cites some British rule (as if that has any relevance in the United States. I did a search, and I discovered that Cathedral City has lots of churches today, so I attempted to insert a line stating that the statement was no longer true. Quick as a bunny, Wikipedia deleted the edit. So, okay, go with information that is 85 years out of date, and see if I care.71.223.94.13 (talk) 01:11, 26 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Cathedral City

edit

Because of its close location to Palm Springs, the city has a large gay/lesbian population. Local rumor has it the choice of color for the street signs, lamp posts and the city's new logo, purple is subliminial for gay pride. I doubt it since the official symbol of gay pride is the rainbow flag or the pink triangle. Cathedral city has widely accepted the residents, regardless of sexual orientation, as their own. The liberal attitude associated with Cathedral City made it easy throughout its history for Jews, Latinos, Asians and black Americans to live there and create large parts of an integrated diverse community, where over two-thirds of the population are non-white minority groups. +Mike D 26 04:59, 28 October 2006 (UTC) 12:43, 18 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

In April 2004 (if the date was correct), a special citywide election took place when 55% of Cathedral City's voters approved a merger with Palm Springs by the year 2006. The merger/annexation of Cathedral city never materialized, but the city's police dept., fire service, parks and library was expected to get taken over by Palm Springs. Interesting to note Cathedral City was incorporated back in 1981, in order to avoid annexation attempts by Palm Springs in the late 1970's. I ask for my fellow wikis for help to find any sources on the failed city merger, whether the Desert Sun web page has it or I consult the Cathedral City or Palm Springs city governments. If the two cities merged, Palm Springs (but Cathedral City will adopt their neighbor's lucrative name) totals at over 100,000 people, surpassing the Coachella Valley's largest city: Indio's population now at 75,000. Both PS and CC are in an economic slowdown, while Indio and other "down valley" cities (mostly in Palm Desert) have grown further. It's because less city business regulations and a resurgent economy to draw in businesses away from Palm Springs, but this is also a problem for Cathedral City. + 207.200.116.70 07:12, 1 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
That's ridiculous:Cathedral City merging with Palm Springs?...especially after Cathedral City had built its new City Hall/Polce Headquarters the year before...good grief!

I'm glad the merger fell through, or else Desert Hot Springs would've been the next "victim"...Michaela92399 01:51, 31 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

As a former resident of Cathedral City (I grew up there from birth until I left for college), who still has family ties to the city and has family members who participated in town council meetings since 2003, this is the first I've heard of any merger with the city of Palm Springs. This seems especially doubtful with the recent ordinance changes in the "Cove" part of the city, requiring all homes to switch to sewer hookup versus sewer tanks, as well as the development of the Cove Improvement District (sewer, curb, street improvement). I have reverted several IP edits which delete the section on Public Safety. None of these edits explained the section blanking. In any event, the original section (which I restored, never created) contains citations to [1] which can show bar graphs displaying crime rates and numbers (citing other sources). Either way the source is cited, the graphs come out with similar presentations. Compare http://cathedralcity.areaconnect.com/crime/compare.htm?c1=Cathedral+City&s1=CA&c2=Palm+Springs&s2=CA with http://palmsprings.areaconnect.com/crime/compare.htm?c1=Palm+Springs&s1=CA&c2=Cathedral+City&s2=CA .

But look at the resulting graphs. The city with the "higher" crime rate has bars which go to the top of the graph. The comparison city and the national average bars are lower. Sadly, though, the lowering of the comparison cities is deceptive. Look at the murder rates for Palm Springs, Cathedral City, and the US. Palm Springs, with a 6.3 murder rate has a bar that goes to the top, but Cathedral City and the US have bars that go only partially up the graph even though the murder rates for Cathedral City and the US are higher (7.7 and 6.3 respectively)! A worse presentation occurs with the Assault graph - the numerical US rate (336.5) is higher than Cathedral City (291.3), but the Cathedral City bar is longer!

With these inaccuracies (deceptions?) in mind, I am deleting the section as it is based on an unreliable source. --S. Rich (talk) 18:02, 12 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

'c' class is generous as it stands now!

Come on! The third paragraph "Others like historians say..." Even without the needed citations to such historians, this is no way to word this. "Historians say..." (and the citation) or "Others say..." (and the citation), but not this. Seriously, who wants the opinion of someone who is merely like a historian?

Secondly, whether the large LGBT community exists or not could be easily cited from local reliable sources. If it is true that its existence is greatly exaggerated, I would imagine that the legend of its existence, if it is such, has also been refuted by either reliable local sources or perhaps regional or national reliable LGBT sources. 75.252.51.234 (talk) 23:55, 17 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Deleting 2000 census info

edit

I'd like to delete the census info since more recent info (2010) is also listed in the article. I've never seen an article that retained older info, generally it's just data from the most recent one that is retained. Hoping no one has an issue with this? 2603:8001:2A00:7428:FCF3:8D31:99AD:F35C (talk) 04:20, 19 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
