Container major A.P. Moller - Maersk has agreed to join a regulatory study with Lloyd's Register to assess the potential for nuclear-powered containerships. UK-based CORE POWER (UK) Ltd will also be part of the study. Unexpected high demand for container freight boosted Hapag-Lloyd AG’s business during the spring to the extent that the company had to raise its expectations twice. Like its European competitors A.P. Moller - Maersk and CMA CGM, Hapag-Lloyd suffered a setback in the first half of the year, but like its competitors, Hapag-Lloyd still significantly outdoes H1 outlook. Hapag Lloyd's EBIT ended at USD 879m for the first half year of 2024, down from just shy of USD 2.8bn in 2023. #shipping #containershipping #finance #business #freight

Tribini Capital founder Thomas Söderberg is patiently waiting for the container market to collapse again. According to the experienced investor and former A.P. Moller - Maersk exec, now is not the right time to buy ships or stock in listed shipping companies. ”The container market may well become a violent bloodbath, once the current disruptions are no longer. But it will take a year, or two, or three, as the liner companies have significant cash holdings, which will shield them for quite some time. And that’s where you need to have patience,” he says. #container #shipping #logistics

A.P. Moller - Maersk is forced to use fossil fuels due to the lack of available green methanol - and the container major is now getting its first LNG-powered ships. This comes after the carrier has in the past rejected LNG as an alternative fuel. ”We have not yet had in-depth discussions with customers about the latest developments in the ships that we are now in the process of ordering. But I think the most important thing for our customers is the green transition,” says Maersk CCO Karsten Kildahl. #container #shipping #logistics #LNG #greenfuels

The privatization of DB Schenker will alter the logistics landscape in Germany, says Raben Group chief exec Ewald Raben. ”Germany is an important market, not only from a domestic point of view, as more or less every second shipment with overland transport goes into Germany,” says Ewald Raben. The sale of DB Schenker "will influence the market a lot. Exactly how, simply depends on who is going to buy them," he says about the impact expected from the sale on Germany, which is a main market for the Dutch logistics company. #logistics #container #shipping #forwarding

Several international NGOs are now disappointed and describe A.P. Moller - Maersk's pivot on LNG as hypocrisy, as it's a fuel it has previously distanced itself from. ”Maersk’s decision is likely driven by the economic attractiveness of fossil LNG in the short term. But even under the most optimistic assumptions about methane leakage, LNG cannot deliver the science-based targets Maersk has committed to,” says Inesa Ulichina, sustainable shipping officer Transport & Environment (T&E). Customers and environmental organizations have in recent years distanced themselves from LNG as it is fossil fuel and can only reduce CO2 emissions by about a fifth. Maersk says that the investment is a matter of competitiveness: ”Our fleet renewal program is fundamental to maintaining competitive edge in our ocean business, and it is a cornerstone in decarbonising our operations,” says Maersk COO Rabab Boulos, in the statement about the fleet renewal proces. #container #shipping #LNG #logistics

A.P. Moller - Maersk's logistics business is "not quite where it needs to be," says chief executive Vincent Clerc. "But we had negative growth all last year. So we’ve turned the corner and we can see growth coming back now." The group aims for an annual profit margin of 6% for its logistics unit, and the margin came to 3,5% in Q2. ”This is a good step forward. But I’m nowhere near the point where I think it’s fine and that we can now just concentrate on growth. We need to keep concentrating on getting the margin above six percent,” says Vincent Clerc. #container #logistics #shipping
