As vehicle and cargo thefts rose and unresolved traffic accidents grew to worrying levels in the State of Tlaxcala, Mexico, authorities decided to install more video cameras to combat these issues. The Executive Commission of the State Public Security System for Tlaxcala, Mexico, deployed a significant upgrade and expansion of their video system using open-platform, data-driven video technology. This extensive upgrade required highly scalable video management software (VMS) to integrate over 800 new cameras from various manufacturers while keeping the existing system fully operational and allowing for future expansion. Following the deployment, officials saw a 93% reduction in cargo thefts and a 22.5% decrease in vehicle thefts. Protecting Polish playgrounds🐗 An increasing number of wild boars in Poland have moved into the cities in search of food. Experts and authorities express concern because the animals can carry diseases and occasionally become aggressive in their search of food. Wild boars roamed playgrounds in the Polish city of Katowice, which naturally has worried Polish parents. So, the authorities decided to implement a video management system. If wild animals enter one of the 16 Family Activity Zones (playgrounds, parks, barbecue areas, etc.) in Katowice, the system immediately alerts an operator, who can quickly decide on the appropriate action. “Katowice is a city of innovative solutions and implementation of new technologies; we are becoming a more and more smart city in many areas. We were the first in Poland to create this intelligent video monitoring system on this scale,“ says Marcin Krupa, Mayor of Katowice. Today, on World Drowning Prevention Day, we reflect on the importance of preventing drowning incidents and the steps we can take to save lives. An estimated 236,000 lives are lost due to drowning every year worldwide. In Denmark, 25% of drownings happen in harbor areas, identifying a clear need for life-saving solutions. In collaboration with Milestone Systems, one of Aalborg University's research teams leveraged AI and video technology to enhance safety in one of Denmark’s busiest ports, Aalborg Harbor. This award-winning project marks a significant step forward in drowning prevention. “By knowing the normal behavior on the waterfront, the model can detect abnormal events such as a person falling off the dock and immediately trigger an alarm,” said Neelu Madan, lead researcher and Ph.D. student at the University of Aalborg. The Bahamas is putting the brakes on hit-and-runs. Between 2009 and 2015, Nassau in the Bahamas experienced a significant increase in criminal activity and hit-and-run accidents. The city’s video surveillance system, installed in 2012, needed expanding to help the Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF) more effectively monitor and respond to the upsurge of incidents. The upgraded video technology is helping the police monitor and address a range of incidents around the city. This includes monitoring and prevention of potential criminal activity, tracking vehicles involved in hit-and-run accidents, elevating external security for government ministries, and assisting with the enforcement of pandemic-related lockdowns. In 2023, Singapore was facing a series of distressing incidents in schools, from missing students to abuse cases and even fatalities. In 2024, similar incidents are still being reported. Singaporean authorities are in a race to clamp down on safety breaches in schools even as parents sound increasingly urgent calls for transparency. While CCTV cameras will be made mandatory in all pre-schools in Singapore by July 2024, there’s an opportunity for schools to go beyond passive surveillance to address existing safety gaps.
