After continuing his further education at Bilston Adult college he went to work in the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter as a trainee stone setter. This was short lived and he moved in to retail working at Warner Bros Photographic retail company in Chapel Ash Wolverhampton.
After 7 years in retail he moved to Insurance but quickly found this was not for him. He found himself working for several window manufacturing companies around the Midlands as a fabricator and repair engineer. He then spent some years driving delivery trucks around the UK. During these years he spent more time helping out at local recording studios in Walsall. Session work came in occasionally which he played bass and supplied vocals on varied recordings.
It was while at the studio the owner of the studio asked if he would consider doing a tour with a band called Hard Rain formed by ex members of Magnum Tony Clarkin and Bob Catley. Alan joined Hard Rain for the tour and remained with the band for the next album "When the good times come" released on Castle Rock Music.
Sept 1999 Catley decided to follow a solo career and Alan played and recorded with Bob over the next couple of years. This was just a hiatus when Bob got a call from Tony Clarkin asking if he wanted to reform Magnum. Bob agreed and Alan continued his bass duties in Magnum.
