👩‍🔬 Progressing Optoelectronics: CLIMAT Method reveals 14 Key Semiconductor Parameters 🔬 The #CLIMAT Method, developed by Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin HZB physicist Dr. Artem Musiienko, is a groundbreaking technique that allows measurement of around 14 different parameters of transport properties in semiconductors in a single process. These include density, lifetime, diffusion lengths, and mobility. The method is based on the Hall effect and enables simultaneous characterization of both negative and positive charge carriers. This method has been successfully tested on twelve diverse semiconductor materials, showcasing its potential to streamline assessment for applications like solar cells. CLIMAT offers a deeper understanding of charge transport mechanisms with just one measurement, saving crucial evaluation time. Published in #NatureCommunications, this approach has garnered high praise from experts like Prof. Vitaly Podzorov, who awarded it 15 out of 16 points in Nature Electronics. While gallium nitride (GaN) has proven to be an excellent semiconductor material, its dominance has primarily been in the n-type GaN category. However, for a semiconductor to be fully functional, we require both p-type and n-type GaN. Similar to the Nobel prize winning case of incorporating acceptor doping in GaN to create a GaN p-n junction (used in white LEDs), the lack of high-quality p-type GaN transistors remain a challenge. Two key factors contribute to this challenge: Low Hole Mobility: The mobility of holes (positive charge carriers) in p-type GaN is orders of magnitude lower than that of electrons. High Ionization Energy of Dopants: The dopants used for p-type GaN have a high ionization energy, making it difficult to achieve efficient conductivity. Recently, our research group in BUET (supervised by Dr. Nadim Chowdhury) collaborated with MIT, Nagoya University, Technology Innovation Institute (Abu Dhabi), and Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs to investigate an intriguing current transport phenomenon in p-type GaN. Known as Space Charge Limited Current (SCLC) transport, this phenomenon exhibits a power-law dependence of current (I) on voltage (V). Photon-number distributions of various light sources have been studied extensively. However, little is known about the statistical distribution of electrons emitted under the effect of intense light. Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light and FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg led by Prof. Maria Chekhova and Prof. Peter Hommelhoff have now discovered extreme and highly unusual statistical events in electron-number distributions obtained when nanometer-sized metal needle tips are illuminated with ultrashort pulses of bright quantum light. The results prove that the number of electrons is influenced by the light statistics and contributes to a deeper understanding of the process of electron emission. The Environmetal Electron Microscopy Group https://lnkd.in/e_NEYYyR of the Ústav přístrojové techniky AV ČR, v.v.i. and NUM solution presents a unique package of products for user-friendly observation of moist samples in their native state under A-ESEM conditions including Cooled sample holder, TDS software and Temperature control unit. These products significantly improve the functional properties and expand the application potential of environmental scanning electron microscopes (ESEM) in both research and industrial practice. Our newly developed products greatly simplify, speed up, and reduce the cost of imaging and analyzing a wide range of samples, from liquids to moist solid samples such as biopolymers, hydrogels, plastics, rubbers, and biological samples in their native state. Unlike other electron microscopic methods, samples can be analyzed directly without the need for drying, chemical fixation, or freezing, avoiding the use of any additional time-consuming and costly methods and complex preparations. Observing samples without the use of chemical fixation is also much more environmentally friendly and provides more valuable information.
