Tomorrow (May 21st) I will be giving a short input (in german) on Open Government and Open Data at the Civic Data Lab of Civic Coding – Innovationsnetz KI für das Gemeinwohl, a program provided to CSOs and welfare organisations by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth and Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection. There I will present at least two examples of Open Data Stewardship and Self empowerment for Data for Policy: As Google Maps does not calculate barrier-free routes, in 2016 I initiated and designed an app for the city of Heidelberg for route planning of barrier-free routes for people with disabilities in the old town and pitched funding for a prototype to the state. The idea was to develop a handy app based on the algorithms of openrouteservice.org from HeiGIT at the University of Heidelberg that a) fills in data gaps in Openstreetmaps with official geo-data, b) displays barrier-free routes as navigation, c) facilitates community-based collection of accessibility data points, d) enables validation of data points by the community and e) identifies gaps in (legally required) accessibility (kinda LegalTech or RegTech). In the long, the app should be made available under the European Union Public Licence (EUPL) for transfer to other cities and as a moral icebreaker for open geodata. This was followed by a long and arduous data stewardship by me in various departments. Not least because data on lowered curbs did not exist, I had to find additional internal financing for a vehicle to collect data those curb-data. At some point, that finally worked. And curiously enough, it had something to do with the lack of Google Streetview in Heidelberg at the time and a price tag in this...[Cliffhanger] (screenshot in comment) Clubs, e.g. sports clubs, can also be lobbyists: e.g. for public services and infrastructure. As organizations, they have more weight, and digital instruments can help them. For example, the German Lifesaving Association (DLRG) has observed a loss of swimming ability in the population. One factor for this could be a decline in municipal swimming pools or their lack of attractiveness. There is hardly any #OpenData on this at the municipal level to get an overview of the situation. In the context of #publicfinance, the 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲 applies all too often. Cost-benefit-analysis are a rarity. This is also due to the fact that public spending - whether sensible or not - is also 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴. This distinguishes public finance from corporate finance. As a result, inefficient budgeting costs Germany 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗼 € 𝟭𝟬𝟬 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆. Efficient use of public money should be given top priority in Germany!👇🏻

We stand for values! For democratic values, for an open and tolerant society. Live and let live! Elections are the tool for us all to preserve such an open and tolerant society in Europe. PLEASE ON 9 JUNE 2024 USE YOUR VOICE and cast your vote for one of the parties which believe in Europe. Do not let extremists of either side win! No one will gain anything from nationalism and extremism. Hold the peace project European Union together. Its institutions might need improvements here and there, but which institution is perfect anyhow. The European Union strengthens togetherness, is a forum for discussions, negotiations and necessary democratic compromise. The EU is still needed.
