Enhancing Loss and Damage Transparency: Paving the Way for COP29 and Beyond 🌱 Last week, UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre hosted a Technical Workshop on #LossandDamage Indicators and Reporting Tools, bringing together experts from across 43 countries. 🌍 As we approach #COP29 and the review of the Warsaw International Mechanism, this workshop marks a crucial step towards enhancing global #climateaction and #transparency 👉"Robust indicators are not just technical tools, they are means of telling the stories of those who suffer the impacts of climate change. This workshop is timely as we approach the WIM review at COP29 and complements ongoing efforts to develop voluntary guidelines for enhancing data collection on loss and damage." - Camila Minerva Rodríguez Tavárez, co-chair of the Warsaw International Mechanism Executive Committee during the workshop. What were our highlights? 🔎Sectoral Focus: We split the focus of the workshop into sectors, to have more targeted discussions with our expert participants. We delved into the Agriculture, Cultural Heritage, Infrastructure, Health, Human Mobility, and Tourism sectors, developing comprehensive indicators for each. Cross-Cutting Themes: ✔Interconnectedness of impacts across sectors ✔Need for both immediate and long-term impact assessment ✔Importance of capturing economic and non-economic losses ✔Regional adaptability of indicators ✔Participatory approaches in data collection and assessment Contributions to Key Mechanisms: ✔Loss and Damage Fund: These indicators will support countries in preparing robust applications for the fund, helping to quantify and qualify their L&D needs across various stages of climate impacts. ✔Santiago Network: The refined indicators will enhance countries' ability to engage effectively with the Santiago Network, facilitating access to technical assistance. ✔WIM ExCom Review: The workshop's outcomes will provide valuable input for the upcoming review, demonstrating progress in L&D assessment and reporting methodologies. 🌍UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre will be presenting the results of this workshop and other findings at COP29 Azerbaijan - stay tuned for our upcoming technical report and future consultations. SAVE THE DATE, 5th June @ Bonn, SB 60: On June 5th, the Net Zero Tracker is co-hosting an event alongside CDP, Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL), Climate Chance and InfluenceMap at Bonn Climate Change Conference, examining the role of the private sector in bolstering ambitious and credible NDCs on the road to COP30. Indeed, as the countdown to ‘NDCs 3.0’ draws closer, countries are re-evaluating their climate commitments and preparing to submit new targets by early 2025. The private sector must play a pivotal role in both delivering emissions reductions and, in turn, assuring bolder climate commitments from national governments. The latest analysis from InfluenceMap and the Net Zero Tracker finds that, despite the explosion in corporate climate commitments, the private sector is still falling short in their climate commitments across all metrics of integrity, implementation and advocacy. This event will delve into the critical role of companies in contributing to NDCs, and will shed light on the importance of frameworks such as UN's Expert Group’s recommendations, and standardisation bodies such as the ISO - International Organization for Standardization Net Zero Standard. This month, the European Parliament has taken a significant step forward with legislation that mandates large EU companies to consider human rights and environmental impacts within their operations and supply chains. This landmark decision highlights the importance of living incomes, living wages, and responsible purchasing practices. At AgUnity, we recognise that while compliance with the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (#CSDDD) is crucial, it's just the beginning. This legislation encourages meaningful engagement with smallholder producers, rather than disengagement, fostering a journey toward improved livelihoods and environmental harmony. We commend Solidaridad Network's perspective on using these regulations to promote real change rather than retreat from supplier relationships. It's an opportunity to reinforce our commitment to transforming agricultural value chains by integrating digital tools that enhance transparency and efficiency. To ensure the effective implementation of the CSDDD, resources such as those outlined by Solidaridad and partners including Fair Trade Advocacy Office (FTAO), Fairtrade International, and Rainforest Alliance are vital. These guidelines and supports are essential for empowering smallholder farmers worldwide, ensuring that the benefits of digital transformation reach those at the start of the supply chain. We look forward to the expert dialogue on the disproportionate impact of climate change on young children taking place at the Bonn Climate Change Conference (SB60) on June 4. ECDAN partners submitted a statement to inform the discussion urging action to address the needs of young children in climate plans and actions. The evidence is startling: ● More than 1.7 million premature deaths among children under five are caused by pollution and toxic substances annually (WHO, 2017).  ● Children born in 2020 will experience, on average, twice as many wildfires, 2.8 times as much exposure to crop failure, 2.6 times as many drought events, 2.8 times as many river floods, and 6.8 times more heatwaves across their lifetimes, compared to a person born in 1960 (Save the Children, 2021).  ● More than 43 million children have been displaced due to weather-related disasters over the last six years, causing more humanitarian crises around the world (UNICEF, 2023) and more. ECDAN partners urge the UN Climate Change Secretariat to leverage this expert dialogue to ensure the unique and specific impacts of climate change on the world’s youngest children are better understood and recognized and early childhood policies and services are integrated into adaptation, mitigation, loss, and climate financing strategies. 📣 Today marks a significant milestone as the European Parliament has passed the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (#CSDDD) with 374 votes in favour! This is an important validation of a long-standing civil society call for business accountability on environmental and human rights in their operations and governance. We celebrate our colleagues across various organisations who have advocated for and gathered the impact evidence needed to support rapporteur Lara Wolters' directive – what a journey it has been! Despite setbacks and concessions, the Fairfood team is thrilled to see principles we have long advocated for coming to fruition. These include: ✅ Living income recognised as a human right ✅ Clearer guidelines on company purchasing practices ✅ Measures to prevent cut-and-run approaches ✅ Emphasis on meaningful stakeholder engagement in due diligence To understand how these principles translate into practice, check out this document put together by Rainforest Alliance, Fair Trade Advocacy Office (FTAO) Solidaridad Network: https://lnkd.in/eA6n8ZKF While some concessions were necessary, such as excluding downstream activities and the reduced scope, we see this as just the beginning of important commitments to more sustainable international trade. #DaringCities 2024 Bonn Dialogues: The Coalition for High Ambition Multilevel Partnerships (CHAMP) presents a more ambitious and durable way to achieve the Paris Agreement goals. The EC Climate Resilience Dialogue, a temporary group of a wide range of stakeholders set up by the European Commission, has concluded its work and published a Final Report (https://lnkd.in/eVQKFBrP) (Commission’s press release: https://lnkd.in/ednyYr5Y). BIPAR, via its experts and its Permanent Secretariat, was an active part of this Dialogue and welcomes the report as a useful and powerful piece of work. Over the last two years, the Climate Resilience Dialogue discussed possible solutions to narrow the climate protection gap that the Report defines as the difference between economic losses and insured losses from the materialisation of climate-related risks. The Report explains, amongst others, that insurance intermediaries together with public authorities and insurers, play a critical role in informing policyholders with regard to the risks to which they may be expose.   The Final Report presents the main climate-related risks in Europe covering floods, wildfires, heatwaves, droughts and storms, highlighting lessons, good practices, and potential solutions stemming from past events that could be implemented to increase climate resilience. Amongst the proposed actions that could be implemented by the insurance industry, some promote, for example, the development of tailored approaches to resilience, the promotion of risk awareness and financial education and the promotion of customer support. BIPAR believes that intermediaries can play an important role in the some of the above-mentioned actions. BIPAR would like to thank the committed engagement of its experts from the insurance intermediary community in the drafting of the Report.

The 60th Sessions of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Subsidiary Bodies—SB60 (also called the 2024 Bonn Climate Change Conference) 3 to 13 June 2024 The High-Level Champions for Climate Action have recently set out an ambitious agenda for COP29 during the Bonn Climate Change Conference. Held in Bonn, Germany, this event focused on scaling up global efforts to address climate change, emphasizing the urgent need for greater action beyond current policies. Key issues on the agenda include climate finance, advancing progress on Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), timely submission of countries’ first Biennial Transparency Reports, work on National Adaptation Plans, and accelerating climate action through a just transition. One of the primary goals is to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels, a theme that has been underscored since COP28. This involves not only setting more ambitious emission reduction targets but also ensuring the effective and equitable implementation of the newly established loss and damage fund, which is designed to help vulnerable countries cope with the impacts of climate change​. The agenda also highlights the importance of inclusive engagement. Greater involvement of youth, Indigenous peoples, people living with disabilities, and frontline communities in the climate dialogue is crucial. These groups often bear the brunt of climate impacts, and their participation is essential for equitable and comprehensive climate action. Additionally, the agenda emphasizes the Global Stocktake process, a mechanism under the Paris Agreement for assessing collective progress towards climate goals. The Bonn conference serves as a key milestone in this process, offering an opportunity to review progress and prepare for the final political phase at COP29. This involves assessing gaps in current climate actions and enhancing support and finance for mitigation and adaptation efforts. Therefore, we all need to push for a zero-carbon, resilient world by fostering unprecedented collaboration among various stakeholders, including cities, businesses, regions, and investors. The call for urgent, collective action moves beyond mere pledges, advocating for concrete, actionable plans to address climate change's immediate and long-term threats. As the world prepares for COP29, the agenda set in Bonn serves as a crucial roadmap for each country for accelerating global efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate impacts, ensuring a sustainable and equitable future for all​.
