The European #electronics industry risks falling behind 💡 (by Dennis Dahlgren) Key segments of the EU's #electronicsmanufacturing industry are set to decline – undermining Europe’s #security, #industrial resiliency, and global competitiveness. A recent analysis by IPC reveals Europe's increasing reliance on foreign regions for electronics manufacturing in critical and strategic sectors such as #aerospace and #defence. Even with the adoption of the European Chips Act, the report – Securing EU’s Electronics Ecosystem – shows that the EU’s market share in critical electronics components other than #chips, such as #PCBs, electronic manufacturing services #EMS, and #advancedpackaging, will fall to 15% by 2035. Evertiq - Global has previously reported on the challenging situation the European industry is facing – especially the PCB industry. Over the previous two decades, the PCB industry in Europe has seen a severe decline, one could even call it an erosion. In passing the Chips Act, the EU made a strategic, but narrowly crafted commitment to the electronics industry – but rebuilding a robust and sustainable European electronics ecosystem requires revitalising and expanding electronics production beyond chips. CALL THIS WEEK FOR EUROPEAN CHIPS ACT 2.0. WHAT?? I am looking forward to chairing a very topical panel at the Optica GLOBAL PHOTONICS ECONOMIC FORUM in Malaga on Day One (Oct 1st). I will be quizzing the following specialists. Gregg Bartlett, CTO, GlobalFoundries;  Burkhard Slischka, Co-founder & CEO, ALLOS Semiconductors;  Ed Bailey, GM/VP, Jabil;  Martin Schell, Executive Director, Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute HHI; Torsten Vahrenkamp, CEO, ficonTEC; M. Ashkan Seyedi, Principal, NVIDIA. I expect this week’s story to come up. ESIA Calls for a Chips Act 2.0 The European Semiconductor Industry Association (ESIA), representing major players like NXP Semiconductors, Infineon Technologies, imec, and Fraunhofer, is urging the European Union to fast-track a second phase of its semiconductor strategy through a "Chips Act 2.0." The goal? To keep the region competitive in the fast-moving global race for semiconductor dominance. The original EU Chips Act, which became law in September 2023, seeks to mobilize €43 billion in public and private investment to strengthen Europe’s semiconductor capabilities, targeting 20% of the global market share by 2030. However, in a statement released Monday, ESIA warned that Europe must do more. While acknowledging the significance of the Chips Act as a "fundamental building block," the group emphasized the need to refine the scope, streamline funding processes, and fill existing gaps. Accelerating State Aid for Global Attractiveness One of the critical mechanisms under the Chips Act is providing state aid to attract global semiconductor manufacturers. Yet, delays in approval are hampering progress. For example, Intel’s proposed €30 billion mega-fab in Germany is still awaiting final approval. By contrast, Taiwan’s TSMC received €5 billion in support from the EU for its new chip facility in Dresden, but this came a year after the company’s commitment to invest in the bloc. ESIA advocates for the EU to fast-track these funding approvals to ensure Europe remains an attractive destination for chipmakers. Open Trade and Strategic Cooperation Beyond funding, ESIA calls for a more open trade policy to maintain global partnerships. They argue for a proactive approach to economic security rather than relying on protectionist measures. The Dutch government, under pressure from the US, has now announced further limits on the export of chipmaking machinery to China. The machines in question are ASML's 1970i and 1980i DUV (Deep Ultraviolet) immersion lithography tools. Toward a Coordinated Industrial Strategy Finally, ESIA recommends a coordinated, long-term industrial strategy led by a "Chips Envoy," an official tasked with aligning Europe’s semiconductor (and photonics?) goals across multiple industries. European semiconductor regions want to further expand cooperation. That was discussed and aligned at the first annual meeting of the European Semiconductor Regions Alliance #ESRA in the Saxon capital Landeshauptstadt Dresden. Knowing Saxony's petty statehood (Kleinstaaterei, everything was invented, but not yet from everybody) while seeing the state of Saxony taking this initiative underlines that the problems in the 🇪🇺 semiconductor industry are understood and well addressed: ✅ A resilient 🇪🇺 semiconductor eco system must provide the whole value chain from raw materials up to testing, cutting and packaging of chips. ✅ At the moment no region facilitates the whole value chain. ✅ Sustainable investments need high utilization rates of all investment goods. This can only be reached by an interregional aligned investment strategy. ✅ The aligned investment strategy will act as a 🧲 for further chip products made in 🇪🇺 made for the 🌍. ✅ All regions will profit from the growing semiconductor business. Q2-2024 European Components Distribution (DMASS) Reports Lower Revenue in Second Quarter 2024. The contraction of the European components market continued in the second quarter of 2024, and the distribution industry was particularly affected. According to DMASS Europe e.V., the European components distribution market recorded a decline of 26.9% in the second quarter of 2024 across all components, with consolidated sales ending at 4.09 billion Euro. While IP&E (Interconnect, Passive and Electromechanical) components seem to normalize faster with a minus of only 12.9% to 1.48 billion Euro, #Semiconductors continue to bear the consequences of the massive growth in the last 3 years. Semi sales declined by 33.1% to 2.62 billion Euro (minor rounding error included). Semiconductor distribution sales in Europe shrank by 33.1% to 2.62 billion Euro, the lowest sales value since Q4/2021, but way above pre-#CoVID times. Quite notable were also regional differences, as shown in the table, with #Germany as the biggest market contracting significantly more than most bigger countries. #UK , #France, #Iberia and #EasternEurope “did better” than average. Hermann Reiter, chairman of DMASS: “When it came to sales, the second quarter hopefully did not surprise anyone. The low bookings of 2023 are now turning into equally low revenues. Due to still high inventory levels, especially in the semiconductor field, and due to macro-economic uncertainties, a return to growth in 2024 for distribution is unlikely or could happen earliest at the end of the year. However, as we can see, parts of the market – IP&E (Interconnect, Passive and #Electromechanical) – have started to normalize already, so our confidence that 2025 will see a return to growth is very high. What makes us a bit nervous is the low visibility within the #supplychain and the lack of longer-term procurement strategies. Yole Group Viewpoint – Powering the future: #Semiconductor solutions for #automotive #electrification 💡 - by Yole Group We cannot hide that #BEV growth has slowed in all 3 major markets, although we see different root causes. As shown in the adoption of BEV among different customer groups, #China is leading the trend. Although the major #EV markets are experiencing slow growth of BEVs, we are seeing a new wave powered by the 800V adoption, >3C fast charging batteries, and high-power DC chargers. Power #electronics, especially #SiC, are one of the key drivers. Remarkably, China has entered the early majority phase, while both #Europe and the #USA are still in early adopter phases, having not yet crossed ‘The chasm’ into majority customer markets. We conclude that the slowdown in China is mainly due to technological limitations in the #battery. While BEVs can satisfy most user scenarios, they are still challenging in cold weather and long-distance driving (people still remember the hours or even days of standing still in storms during the Chinese New Year holidays). For Europe and the US alike, where wealthy early adopters are the base of EV adoption, however, the hefty price gap between BEV and its ICE counterpart still keeps these 2 markets from a large majority. We conclude that the slowdown in both Europe and the US is mainly due to #battery #supplychain limitations, which still lack local production and cost competitiveness. The observation that different generations have different attitudes is as old as humanity itself. Lately I've been asked a lot in interpersonal exchanges and interviews what I think about #GenZ. And I think it's an interesting question because it's very multidimensional. My two cents on the subject: Each generation has its own influences and needs. From my perspective, the key is to listen. Valuing diversity also means valuing and integrating different generations. We need to stop pointing fingers and reducing generations to stereotypes. Everyone has a role to play, be it companies or leaders. Leading multi-generational teams is an important part of leadership training at Infineon Technologies. I personally use #ReverseMentoring and have already had many "aha" moments. Changing perspectives is valuable. It opens us up to new ideas from other generations and promotes mutual understanding. What do I take away from my exchanges with younger talents? They are keen to make a difference, take responsibility and pursue their visions with passion - that sounds promising to me. 😉 Let's work together and leverage the power of our differences! 🏗️ 👍 The #SmartPowerFab continues to take shape at Infineon Technologies in #Dresden. Especially the so called waffle tables that form the floor of the cleanroom are more and more visible. They are characterized by the numerous, large holes in the concrete floor that allow the air to flow out of the cleanroom into the level below. Filters are later placed in the level above to cleanse the air and return it to the production area. This is an important cycle to keep the cleanroom free of particles – so that the processing of the delicate wafers can run smoothly.

It’s magic! How to identify your lost cat This week we had our German friends over from ELATEC GmbH, our long term supplier and leader in the market when we have it about RFID solutions. RFID readers for secure printing, access control for PCs or doors, payment systems for public transport, EV charging, a chip in the neck of your pet or in the ear of your cow. TOP-electronics and ELATEC Inc. are getting more close as a team looking at technology solutions, customization and territories. RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) works by using radio waves to identify objects without touching them. It involves two main parts: a "tag" with a small chip and antenna, and a "reader" that sends out radio waves. When the reader is near the tag, the tag picks up the signal and sends its information back to the reader.  This is how the ID from the tag is know, it could be a pass for payments, to identity your lost cat. The tags also can have memory to write and read data for the application, for example the point for the loyalty system at the local shoe-store. RFID has multiple protocol options, ELATEC GmbH offers all of them. The distances could be from mm’s up to meters depending on the technology, 125KHz, 13.5MHz of higher. The antenna is integrated in the reader, and there are version to have the antenna externally. RFID is in your passport as well and is the access to everywhere ! #RFID

Nexperia Invests $200 Million in #Hamburg #Chip Facility 🇩🇪 #Semiconductors manufacturer #Nexperia announced plans to invest $200 million (appx. 184 million Euros) to develop the next generation of wide bandgap semiconductors (#WBG) such as #siliconcarbide (#SiC) and #galliumnitride (#GaN), and to establish production infrastructure at the #Hamburg site. At the same time, #wafer fab capacity for silicon (Si) #diodes and #transistors will be increased. This picture was taken at the exhibition floor at embedded world Exhibition&Conference...in 2022. Last week in Nuremberg, I couldn’t see cars – or too automotive technology for that matter – in display. The different ecosystem players were still there: OEM (the car makers), Tier-1 (the companies that sell systems to the car makers), Tier-2 (the semiconductor companies that mostly sell to Tier-1s) and finally IP and other vendors that are part of the food chain. This at least was the “correct order of things” up until recently. But based on my many discussions last week, it seems the industry is in an active soul-searching:   The traditional car makers bosses – mostly European - are looking west to Tesla and east to China, where cars are designed “top-down”: often starting with the SW in-mind, and then designing the core chips in-house, and buying some of the others. Similar to how mobile-phones are made. The European OEMs often feel that buying from the long-established supply chain of Tier-1s and Tier-2s leave them with undifferentiated cars, primarily in competition with the new players in the market. On the other hand, they have years of legacy and multiple models to support and look with envy on the newcomers that can start with a clean sheet of paper.      That creates a stir that has the potential to disrupt the industry: OEMs thinking of building their own chips, semiconductor companies selling directly to OEMs, Tier-1 players trying to find their way in this puzzle.   Amidst all that, Tesla – the “role model” – yesterday announced shedding 10% of its workforce (14,000 positions!), facing slowing demand and pressure on prices from Chinese competitors. Quite timely, The Economist this week reports that most EV wannabe-Teslas are also in trouble. On the other hand, Xiaomi introduced a few days ago a its first car, a Porsche-like all electrical SU7 model, that sells cheaper that Tesla’s Model-3 in China.   It seems there is a exciting road ahead for the automotive industry, with many twists and turns!

STMicroelectronics to Build €5 Billion Plant in #Italy with #EU Chips Act Aid STMicroelectronics NV said it plans to spend €5 billion ($5.4 billion) on a #manufacturing plant for #chips and packaging in #Catania, #Italy in a multi-year project that’s being partly funded by the #EuropeanUnion's #ChipsAct. The Italian government, within the Chips Act framework, will give STMicro €2 billion in #subsidies, the company said in a statementon Friday. The plant, which will specialize in silicon-carbide manufacturing as well as testing and packaging, will start production in 2026 and targets hitting full capacity by 2033, it said. The Missing Strategy in Europe's Chip Ambitions 💡 Member States Must Drive the Next Steps 👏 by stiftung neue verantwortung - NOW: interface! #European #semiconductor #technology suppliers hold market-leading—sometimes monopolistic—positions at various points in the global semiconductor value chain. #Europe is home to competitive suppliers of #semiconductormanufacturing equipment, #chemicals, #sensors, #automotive #chips, and power #semiconductors, to name just a few. Because of the steep barriers to entry and close customer–supplier relationships, these are not easy markets to enter and successfully compete as a new company. The world depends on semiconductor technologies from European companies, and just as Europe depends on front- and back-end manufacturing in #Asia, Asian fabrication plants (fabs) depend on #manufacturing equipment and chemicals from European suppliers. Furthermore, manufacturers of #electricvehicles all over the world depend on chips from Europe. The list goes on. Semiconductors are a strategic asset to Europe, one that provides #geopolitical leverage—as other countries depend on access to our #technology. Because #semiconductors are at the epicenter of the #USA – #China technology rivalry, it is crucial for the #EuropeanUnion (#EU) to have a clear-eyed, well-informed semiconductor strategy rooted in current geopolitical reality. Unfortunately, the EU #ChipsAct is not a long-term semiconductor strategy with meaningful policy objectives but a collection of ideas and initiatives. This necessitates EU member states filling in the blanks—understand the competitive position of their domestic semiconductor industries; articulate why and to what end they want to support this sector, and what their long-term policy objectives are; and invest in their national administrative resources and brainpower. Doing all of that is a prerequisite to being able to engage in, as well as shape, policy discourse meaningfully at the EU level, vis-à-vis the United States and at the international level. If EU member state governments fail to enhance and intensify their efforts, there is a very real risk that the European #semiconductorindustry will lose its prominence in the global semiconductor value chain, and Europe would consequently have lost a strategic asset. Again note the process node bifurcation between Europe and US/Taiwan/Korea..Europe remains largely mature planar, whereas the others go deeper into higher performance. Expect China to compete head-on.

Oops, We did it again! #Memory companies #investment strategy 💡 We are in the #semiconductor market phase where everybody disagrees about what is happening. The market is up; the market is down. #Mobile #phones are up…. oh no, now they are down. The #PC market is up—oh no, we must wait until we can get an #AI PC. The #inflation is high—the consumer is not buying. For us in the industry, the 13-week financial analyst cycle is the entire universe - time did not exist before this quarter, and it will cease to exist after it. Sell, sell, sell, pull, push, cheat, steal, fake, blame! Anything to make the guidance number. If you are in the hamster wheel, there is no oxygen, and you lose the overview. The bottom line is that it does not matter, and the quarterly cycles are a (sometimes expensive) distraction from achieving long-term business success. The #semiconductor business does not rotate around a quarter or a financial year. It is orientated around a four-year cycle, as can be seen below.
