Check out this recently published methods article from Dietmar W. Hutmacher from Max Planck Queensland Centre (MPQC) on the line between in vitro and ex vivo investigations! In tissue engineering research, the terms in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo are essential but often misunderstood. In vitro means "in glass," referring to lab experiments in test tubes, while in vivo involves living organisms, and ex vivo pertains to living tissue outside its host but in controlled conditions. As experimental models become more complex, the distinction between in vitro and ex vivo can blur, leading to confusion. This discussion aims to clarify these terms and establish criteria for ex vivo experiments, helping the tissue engineering and regenerative medicine community enhance their understanding and communication. 🔬 Congratulations to Nils Fredebeul-Beverungen, Maximilian Steinhorst, and Dr. Teja Roch on their outstanding new scientific publication on bipolar plates: “Comparison of Magnetron-Sputtered and Cathodic Arc-Deposited Ti and Cr Thin Films on Stainless Steel for Bipolar Plates,” published in Materials by MDPI. 👉🏼 Find the publication here: https://lnkd.in/er-yAJdk   This work investigates the potential of magnetron sputtering and cathodic arc evaporation as suitable coating methods for bipolar plates in PEM #FuelCells. Cr and Ti thin films were deposited onto 0.1 mm SS316L by varying the power and bias voltage. The surface structure and thickness of the coatings were examined using SEM and tactile profilometry. The coating variants were compared based on the electrical and electrochemical properties relevant to bipolar plates. The sputtered Cr thin films achieved the lowest contact resistance values and exhibited a columnar structure with a smooth surface. Regarding electrochemical properties, titanium deposited via cathodic arc evaporation showed a low current density in the passive region and high breakthrough potential. 💡 Overall, both deposition techniques have their individual advantages for preparing bipolar plate coatings. In close collaboration with the Universität Innsbruck, the Universität Münster and Anton Paar, the PCCL recently published a research paper (https://lnkd.in/dkmPx6hh) in the renowned journal “Advanced Materials”. 👏 The article highlights the application of a photoswitchable nitrogen superbase as a novel catalyst in dynamic covalent polymers. By the exposure to UV or visible light, the macroscopic mechanical material properties are altered in a locally controlled manner. Finally, the resulting unique network characteristics enable advanced applications such as spatially resolved, reversible reshaping as well as micro-imprinting over multiple steps. 💡

The first of six sextupole chambers for GSI particle accelerator has been successfully installed in a high-performance magnet system. This marks an important step in a cutting-edge project that will have a significant impact in advanced scientific research. The GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research in Darmstadt operates a worldwide leading accelerator facility for research purposes, to reach a better understanding of the structure and behavior of the world that surrounds us. But what exactly is a sextupole chamber? A sextupole chamber is a specialized vacuum component used in particle accelerators and synchrotrons. It’s designed to house a sextupole magnet, which focuses and stabilizes particle beams by correcting aberrations caused by the non-linear nature of magnetic fields. By stabilizing the beam and enhancing its focus, sextupole chambers play a vital role in enabling groundbreaking discoveries and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in science and technology.   Next up: more chambers to go! Thank you for this inspiring and as always very well organized 11 RIPT conference at Forschungszentrum Jülich. Thanks to all contributing to the conference with their talks and posters. It was really nice to meet old friends and to make new ones in the field of thermal spraying. Our Ph.D. Ebru GYOKTEPELILER presented a poster and won the 1st price in the poster award. Thanks to everyone who was interested in our research in the field on the coating of Al2O3-based CMCs and also for voting for the poster. In the project presented on the poster and funded by investBW, we are working with our project partners (Walter E.C. Pritzkow Spezialkeramik. & OBZ Innovation GmbH, ICVT Universität Stuttgart) to develop a new concept for high-temperature reactors. The aim is to replace stainless steel reactors with oxide ceramic ones in exothermal reforming processes. At this point, CMC structures show advantages with their increased fracture toughness, which reduces fragile failure.  At IFKB - Universität Stuttgart we are working on the development of gas diffusion barrier and resistor heating coatings for high temperatures. From our initial results, gas tightness can be increased by more than 90% with the application of a plasma sprayed gas diffusion barrier layer.  Additionally, stable crack-free coating with a smooth surface can be achieved on CMC components by applying a special bond coat. Tailoring Complex 3D ECM Architectures for Cellular and Tissue Morphogenesis using our Circular Dichroism Instrument 🔬 This study by Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich focuses on engineering 3D fibrillar fibronectin matrices that can integrate with other extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins like vitronectin, collagen, and laminin to mimic tissue-specific compositions and cellular responses. By utilizing innate fibrillogenic mechanisms, the researchers created complex 3D ECM architectures in vitro. These matrices guide fibroblast adhesion, 3D tissue formation, and epithelial cell morphogenesis. They also support neuronal network growth and human brain organoid development. At this year's European Bioconductor Conference (#EuroBioC2024) in Oxford, Dr. Florian Auer from our chair #MISIT at the Universität Augsburg presented his poster titled "Enhancing Reproducibility: A Comprehensive Workflow for Integrating and Visualizing Biological Networks". 🧬🖥️ Together with co-authors Hryhorii Chereda, Júlia Perera-Bel, and Frank Kramer, he introduced a workflow designed to improve #reproducibility in biological network analysis. 🔄🔍 The #Bioconductor packages ndexr and RCX enable seamless integration and interactive analysis of networks, making them more accessible to non-technical collaborators. From our Photonics Frontiers series: A new technique that enhances the resolution of fluorescence microscopy down to the Ångström scale has been developed by Ralf Jungmann’s research group at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry and LUDWIG MAXIMILIANS UNIVERSITAT MUNCHEN .
