Double Distinction for Sustainable Designs 🔴 🔴 Sustainable design is more than a trend; it’s a responsibility. In the new “Sustainable Design” metacategory, we celebrate products that exemplify durability, adaptability, and eco-friendliness. These products are not only designed to last but also to minimise environmental impact through material and energy efficiency, as well as the use of renewable and recyclable resources. Evaluation Criteria for the “Sustainable Design” metacategory: 🔩 Durable, adaptable products that grow with their users 🏗️ Material- and energy-efficient construction 🌿 Renewable and recyclable raw materials 🔧 Repairable and recyclable products To have a product considered in this metacategory, it must first be submitted in one of the traditional categories. The evaluation process consists of two rounds: the Red Dot Jury first assesses the overall design, followed by a focused review of the product’s sustainable or innovative features. Honoured entries in the metacategory will receive a unique Red Dot Label, highlighting your commitment to sustainability. In memory of Bruno Sacco (1933–2024): Remembering an Italian master of German automotive design Bruno Sacco, a visionary in automotive design, shaped Mercedes-Benz’s iconic look for decades. From his early beginnings in Italy to leading Mercedes-Benz’s design team from 1975 to 1999, Sacco revolutionised luxury car aesthetics. His work on the S-Class and other models became benchmarks in automotive history. Born in Italy, Sacco’s career began in an era where design was transitioning into a key strategic tool for automotive companies. His vision brought a new level of sophistication and innovation, balancing both form and function. In 1994, Sacco’s team was honoured as “Design Team of the Year” by Red Dot, a moment celebrated by 175 of his colleagues on stage. Sacco’s humility and team-oriented mindset were central to his success, but his personal vision always had the final word in Mercedes’ designs. Sacco’s contributions to design continue to inspire, and his legacy will forever be remembered by the Red Dot community. Discover how markilux GmbH + Co. KG is revolutionising urban outdoor spaces with its latest innovation, the markilux 900, designed to seamlessly blend functionality with contemporary aesthetics. In an interview, Michael Gerling, Managing Director Technology + Production at markilux, offers deeper insights into their design philosophy and technical advancements. 🔴 Red Dot: The markilux 900 was specifically developed for urban balcony settings. What features did you focus on? Michael Gerling: Our new wedge-in awning is designed for fast installation with just a few drill holes. At the same time, we aimed to create a product with convincing design, function and quality. The markilux 900 is the first awning of its kind with folding arm technology and a cassette. 🔴 What role does simple installation play? The awning is primarily intended for renters and homeowners, so this is naturally an important consideration. Classic folding arm awnings cannot be fitted in every flat and can rarely be removed in case you move house. Installation with clamping posts also minimises the structural impact on the building, an argument that could persuade hesitant landlords to agree to the installation of an awning. 🔴 How did you manage to achieve stability in a minimalist design? We have been experimenting with materials, statics and various forms for decades, so it was a pretty routine process for us. An idea is always the first source of inspiration, followed by numerous further steps to make it technically feasible. This is where our many years of experience come into play, as well as our aspiration to continuously develop our expertise, our products and the related technology. 🔴 How important is the development of new products to you? It’s a powerful driver that shapes a company’s image. But we aren’t just focusing on launching new awnings in the market. There is also excellent potential to optimise existing models. We always keep an eye on market requirements and try to eliminate as many constraints as we can in the product development process. 📽 Watch what our jury member Dick Spierenburg has to say about this outstandig product: https://lnkd.in/e3Sy299E #RedDotAward #ProductDesign #OutdoorDesign

Discover what makes CookingRAK a standout product in modern kitchen design. ✨ With an innovative approach that integrates a hidden induction hob into the countertop, CookingRAK offers a seamless blend of aesthetics and functionality. In an interview, Leonardo de Muro discusses the inspiration behind this unique design, the meticulous craftsmanship of RAK Ceramics porcelain slabs, and how CookingRAK aims to transform kitchens into multifunctional spaces. 🔴 Red Dot: What makes your award-winning product, CookingRAK, stand out? Leonardo de Muro: CookingRAK stands out due to its innovative design that integrates a hidden induction hob into the countertop, offering a seamless blend of aesthetics and functionality. This transforms the kitchen into a multifunctional space allowing users to prepare, cook and dine in exactly the same area. The unique RAK porcelain slabs used for this purpose are capable of withstanding high temperatures and are both scratch- and stain-resistant. 🔴 What impression do you want users to get from the design? CookingRAK aims to impress users with its perfect blend of elegance and practicality. We want users to perceive it as a sophisticated yet highly functional addition to their kitchen, enhancing both the cooking experience and the overall aesthetics of the space. Chef Massimo Bottura, who has three Michelin stars to his name, chose it for his new restaurant. He said, “When I think of the new CookingRAK worktop, the first thing that comes to mind is ‘beauty’. Natural materials, clean shapes and straight lines.” 🔴 What is your design philosophy? At the heart of CookingRAK lies a design philosophy that seeks to redefine the culinary landscape by seamlessly integrating innovation, practicality and aesthetics. Our approach is multifaceted, driven by a deep understanding of the needs and desires of the users of modern kitchens. Every element of CookingRAK is meticulously designed to optimise work processes and elevate the kitchen experience to a new level. At the same time, we believe that a kitchen should be more than just a functional space – it should be a place of inspiration and beauty. The Buoy Bottle is outstanding in the way it is produced and the impact it can have. In an interview, Pascal Schaller explains the production process and what obstacles they had to overcome in order to get the product they have now. ⬇ 🔴 Red Dot: Sustainable production was the focus of Buoy’s development. Can you tell us something about the material? Pascal Schaller: We are very proud of the fact that we use 100 per cent recycled ocean-bound plastic. It is recovered from rivers and coastal regions in Mexico and California. We specifically source food-grade HDPE from recycled milk and juice bottles. A state-of-the-art recycling plant in Los Angeles processes these materials for us. 🔴 Are they easy to process or did you need innovative manufacturing techniques? Using 100 per cent recycled material is anything but easy. Even the manufacturers encouraged us to add new plastic to improve the melt flow and to simplify production. But we refused. Four years, four manufacturers and two moulds later, we finally got the product right. You have to understand that recycled plastic without additives reduces the melt flow by a factor of 10, so we had to develop a mould for these specific conditions, with larger gates and a more complex cooling system to control the flow of material in the mould. 🔴 Which design detail was most important to you in Buoy? The surface texture was a very conscious choice. We ensured that it was slightly rough for a secure grip, while at the same time providing a matt finish for the desired aesthetic. We also streamlined the bottle components to reduce weight and optimise durability, but also designed the thread to twist on and off with just a few turns for enhanced convenience.
