We reached a major milestone when we celebrated the opening of our eCampus in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim. This new development competence centre at the very heart of our company headquarters is where we will develop future generations of battery cells and advanced batteries that will drive our electric vehicles. Making the battery part of the circular economy is central to our sustainable business strategy ‘Ambition 2039’. To fully embrace #circularity, we will design all aspects of the battery to be more sustainable across the entire battery ecosystem. By focusing our expertise in this specially designed facility, we are opening up whole new opportunities for collaboration and #innovation. Crucially – that includes the aim to close the battery loop. Our forthcoming battery recycling plant in Kuppenheim holds the key with its innovative process. We’ll bring you more on that soon. Did you know that the first automobile race from Paris to Rouen on 22 July 1894 was won by vehicles whose engines were manufactured under Daimler licence? The vehicles by Peugeot and Panhard & Levassor were powered by a two-cylinder V-engine developed by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach in 1888. Mobility pioneer Gottlieb Daimler and his son Paul were among the attendees and spectators of this automobile race from Paris to Rouen on 22 July 1894. Twenty years later, Paul Daimler recalled this event, which was also characterised by the competition between different drive technologies: “It was an absolutely unforgettable sight that will stay with me throughout my life”. For 120 years, Stuttgart-Untertürkheim has been the beating heart of Mercedes-Benz powertrain. The success story continues into the electric age with our Mercedes-Benz eCampus. This new, state-of-the-art competence centre for development of cells and batteries is where our scientists and engineers will develop future generations of advanced #batteries and battery cells for our growing portfolio of electric vehicles. We laid the foundation stone on May 31, 2022 and we are continuously advancing the construction site. Conducting battery cell R&D in-house is an important part of our sustainable business strategy and central to our 'Design for Environment' approach. This is how we drive battery #circularity from the very start. The cells inside the battery hold the key to efficiency, energy density and resource conservation. With innovative new chemistries, we can squeeze even more power into smaller, lighter packages using fewer resources. This is how we plan to make our batteries of the future more sustainable. At the eCampus, we will ultimately research, develop and build battery cells as well as test cells, modules and new battery generations. Do you know what the AMG driving programmes of the Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupé offer? A varied and wide-ranging driving experience, of course! The AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving programmes are tailored precisely to the drive technology of the plug-in hybrid. They adjust important parameters, such as the response of the drive and the transmission. There are two hybrid-specific driving programmes in the new Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 HYBRID 4MATIC+: ● With “Electric”, purely electric driving occurs from a standstill up to 140 km/h. If the battery is empty or the driver suddenly requires and demands more power, the intelligent operating strategy switches automatically: the combustion engine starts and briefly takes over the drive power. ● In the “Battery Hold” driving programme, the combustion engine and electric motor run at a maximum boost of around 25 percent, as in the “Comfort” driving programme. The biggest difference: the operating strategy keeps the battery charge level constant. Once again a pioneer: The DRIVE PILOT by Mercedes-Benz is the first conditionally automated driving system that operates in real-life-driving conditions. Here are three facts you did not know about: 1. THE LICENSE: In December 2021 Mercedes-Benz received the world's first internationally valid system approval for conditionally automated driving. 2. THE SENSORS: DRIVE PILOT uses over 30 sensors that can even recognize road conditions such as if the street is wet or not. 3. THE REDUNDANCY: With DRIVE PILOT vehicles safety-relevant features have a fallback: Brakes, steering or sensors: if one system fails, there is another one to take over. This is called redundancy. With the DRIVE PILOT Mercedes-Benz again meets its own aspiration of constant innovation. The automated driving functions takes over certain driving tasks. However, a driver is still required. The driver must be ready at all times to take over control of the vehicle when prompted to do so by the vehicle.
