Two-photon polymerization direct laser writing of ultra-small Brownian viscometers. Measuring the viscosity of small fluid volumes can be challenging. Researchers from the HUN-REN Biological Research Centre, Szeged and collaborators recently reported on two-photon polymerization direct laser written (3D printed) ultra-small Brownian viscometers to address exactly this. The team used Menlo Systems’ C-Fiber 780 – a model from 14 years ago! – to 3D print viscometer structures of a few tens of microns in size to successfully measure viscosities of Newtonian liquids. The results could lead to a practical low-volume viscometers that can be fully integrated into lab-on-a-chip devices. Determining isotope shifts in neutral calcium. Researchers at The University of Bonn recently reported on their efforts to determine isotope shifts in the four most abundant isotopes of calcium, determining the shifts with a precision below 100 kHz by means of saturated absorption spectroscopy. The team used a Menlo Systems multi-wavelength-coated ORC-Cubic – an optical reference cavity based on ultra-low expansion (ULE) glass – to stabilize a tapered amplifier diode laser, the second harmonic of which was used for the spectroscopy measurements of the 423 nm transition of calcium. 🌐 Erster photonischer Quantencomputer in Deutschland rechnet in Paderborn 🤩 Wissenschaftler*innen der #UniPaderborn haben es in Zusammenarbeit mit den Partnern Menlo Systems, Fraunhofer IOF Jena und Swabian Instruments geschafft, den ersten photonischen #Quantencomputer Deutschlands zu entwickeln – den „PaQS“ („Paderborn Quantum Sampler“). Dieser Forschungserfolg öffnet Türen zu neuen Möglichkeiten im Bereich der Energiewende, Medikamentenforschung oder abhörsicheren Kommunikation. 👏🏼 💡 Mit PaQS wurde Europas größte „Gaußsche-Boson-Sampling-Maschine“ realisiert. Dabei wird – vereinfacht ausgedrückt – gemessen, aus welchen Ausgängen eines photonischen Netzwerkes die Photonen kommen. Im Gegensatz zu früheren Implementierungen haben die Paderborner Wissenschaftler*innen PaQS mit einem vorausschauenden Blick in Richtung Systemintegration und vollständiger Programmierbarkeit gebaut. Celebrating Excellence in Terahertz Research. After a successful IRMMW-THz conference, our colleague Prince Bawuah (PhD) had the pleasure of visiting Shaghik Atakaramians, Senior Lecturer and leader of the Terahertz Innovation Group at UNSW, Sydney. We were thrilled to see how our compact terahertz spectrometer, TeraSmart, has become a crucial part of her cutting-edge research in THz waveguides, metamaterials, and communications. Dr. Atakaramians was an early adopter of our TeraSmart system in Australia, and her work has inspired other researchers globally. We are thrilled to congratulate her on receiving the prestigious Zhenyi Wang Prize for Excellence at IRMMW-THz.
