We are kicking off a new series on waste streams, starting with one of the most common and significant challenges: Food waste. Did you know that about one-fifth of food produced globally is wasted or lost according to the World Food Programme? When food ends up in landfills, it decomposes and releases methane, a greenhouse gas that significantly contributes to climate change. Various startups are also using waste from food in their innovation such as AraBat srl and Novapedra that use orange and vegetable waste to create fascinating solutions. To reduce food waste, you could consider: - Reducing food waste at the source by better forecasting demand, adjusting portion size and improving storage practices; - Donate excess food to food banks or charities; - Compose food waste and return nutrients to the soil. By reducing food waste, we can greatly reduce our environmental impact. Important news for producers in France! From January 2025, France will introduce new rules to encourage easier battery removal and replacement in products like electronics and small vehicles. If batteries can be easily removed by users and come with clear instructions, companies won’t face extra fees. However, products with batteries that can’t be easily removed or don’t include proper instructions will have to pay a penalty. This change aims to make products more eco-friendly and easier to recycle. As highlighted by Emiliano Altamirano, the CEO of Novapedra, “We will exceed our expected revenue for this first year in business by 50% with our B2B customer. This is great news for us since we can re-invest that capital and expand our range of products.
