Indigenous People: Guardians of Global Biodiversity 🌍 Did you know 𝟴𝟬% 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱’𝘀 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘀? These communities protect some of the planet’s most crucial ecosystems, often in Biodiversity Hotspots—areas rich in life but under threat. 36% of the world’s remaining intact forests are on Indigenous lands, which are better maintained and hold higher biodiversity than non-Indigenous areas. With just 5% of the global population, Indigenous peoples play an outsized role in protecting nature, with nearly half of the world’s endangered mammals living on their lands. 🦜🐾 Forests on Indigenous land also experience deforestation rates up to 25% lower than the global average, helping preserve biodiversity and combat climate change. 🌳 𝗔𝘁 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻, 𝘄𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗲𝘁’𝘀 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀. At goodcarbon, we’re playing the long game, and biodiversity is our secret weapon. Why? 𝗕𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲. From forests to wetlands to grasslands, ecosystems packed with biodiversity aren’t just beautiful—they’re resilient and powerhouse carbon sinks. 🌍 Here’s the science: 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝟳𝟬% 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘀, making them a stronger ally in the fight against climate change. And it’s not just the plants doing the heavy lifting—𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺’𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗯𝘆 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝟮𝟱𝟬%! 🐾 Their everyday activities—like burrowing and foraging—help keep the balance. Meanwhile, monoculture forests and some poorly implemented carbon projects might seem like quick fixes, but they can hurt biodiversity and limit long-term carbon sequestration. In contrast, Nature-based Solutions (NbS) that prioritize biodiversity aren’t just better for the planet, they’re also better at standing up to climate stressors and keeping carbon locked away for good. 🌳 If we’re serious about long-term climate resilience, biodiversity is non-negotiable. 🌱 Want to stay ahead of the curve on sustainability and biodiversity? The Urgent Need for Mangrove Restoration in India: A Call to Action 🌿 You might have seen it on our project team’s LinkedIn timeline: our teams have visited mangrove restoration grounds in India. A crucial solution for environmental resilience and supporting local livelihoods. The urgency to act is undeniable, and here’s why: 1. Mangroves Are Disappearing Rapidly For example, the Sundarbans region in India and Bangladesh has lost 24.55% of its mangroves (136.77 sq. km) due to permanent erosion over the past three decades. This alarming loss leaves these vital ecosystems increasingly vulnerable. 2. Mangroves: Nature’s First Line of Defense Mangroves provide essential protection against extreme weather events like cyclones and floods. Their life-saving impact has been proven, such as after Odisha’s 1999 supercyclone, when they significantly reduced human casualties. 3. Mangroves Are Critical for Biodiversity and Fisheries Mangroves serve as breeding grounds and nurseries for marine life, which supports healthy fish populations and sustains local fisheries. In India, mangroves contribute to 23% of commercial marine fisheries output, and every hectare of mangroves increases fish production by 1.86 tonnes per year. All in All: Restoring mangroves not only protects against climate impacts but also enhances biodiversity, stabilizes coastlines, and supports local economies through fisheries and ecotourism. Their ability to absorb carbon, reduce flooding, and protect endangered species makes them a keystone for a sustainable and resilient future. Investing in mangrove restoration now will yield long-term environmental and economic benefits. Stay tuned for more updates on our efforts! 🌱 Source: “Erosion, an important cause of mangrove loss in the Sundarbans,” Mongabay; Economic analysis of mangrove and marine fishery linkages in India, April 2017. #MangroveRestoration #Sustainability #ClimateAction #goodcarbon #Biodiversity

Why Biodiversity Should Be Our Top Priority 🌿 While climate change dominates the headlines, the urgency around biodiversity loss still flies under the radar. But here's the truth: biodiversity is essential for human life and the global economy. In 2011, the economic value of biodiversity was estimated between $170 and $190 trillion—double the global GDP at the time. Today, around 60% of economic output worldwide relies directly or indirectly on nature. Despite this, we invest less than 0.2% of global GDP in protecting it. The consequences are staggering: according to the World Bank, biodiversity loss could cost the global economy $2.7 trillion annually by 2030. It's time to see protecting our ecosystems not just as an environmental issue, but as a critical economic necessity. Five Key Questions to Assess Biodiversity in Carbon Projects: We ensure every project is thoroughly validated and verified with rigorous methodologies and site visits. Through our Nature Analytics Framework, we offer transparent insights backed by data to help you invest in high-impact carbon credits with confidence. When evaluating carbon projects, asking the right questions is crucial to ensure biodiversity is truly being protected and enhanced. Here are the essential questions to guide your assessment: 1. How diverse is the ecosystem being restored? Is the project using a wide variety of native species for restoration, or is it focused on monocultures? Does it aim to create a balanced, resilient ecosystem with multiple species? 2. Is biodiversity being both protected and enhanced? How does the project ensure it safeguards existing ecosystems, preventing any negative impact on local biodiversity? What specific measures are being taken to enhance biodiversity, such as reintroducing native species or improving habitat quality? 3. Are there any invasive or harmful species present? Is the project ensuring the exclusion of species that could negatively affect the local ecosystem? 4. Are endangered species’ habitats being protected and conserved? Does the project actively protect habitats that are critical for endangered or vulnerable species? Does the project increase habitats for these species, e.g. through biodiversity corridors? 5. Is the project located in a biodiversity hotspot? Is the project situated in a region recognized for its rich biodiversity, and how does it contribute to preserving that unique environment? By asking these questions, you can identify high-quality biodiversity projects that not only mitigate carbon but also protect and restore our planet's ecosystems. 🌿 Read about one of our Biodiversity Champion projects: https://lnkd.in/dhuPjb6M #sustainability #carboncredit #naturebasedsolution #biodiversity #goodcarbon

🌱 As we gear up for COP16 in October, our focus for the next month is shifting towards 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 – 𝗮 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀! At goodcarbon, we exclusively support nature-based solutions, one of the reasons are their co-benefits, like biodiversity. Many of our projects are what we call “𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀”, recognized for their outstanding contributions based on our quality framework. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆? It refers to the variety of life in an area – animals, plants, fungi, and microorganisms. Biodiversity can be measured in various ways: genetic diversity, species diversity, and ecosystem diversity. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁: 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗝𝗮𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗿 🐆 One example of a standout project is a reforestation project from Mexico. With 4.7 out of 5, based on goodcarbon rating, this project is a biodiversity champion: - Reforesting 1,633 hectares of overgrazed land with native species - Creating a biodiverse corridor connecting two Protected Natural Areas - Home to threatened species like jaguars, ocelots, and spider monkeys - Ongoing wildlife monitoring with camera traps and acoustic devices - Collaboration with local universities for research on fauna - Exclusive planting of native species to restore floral biodiversity 🌍 Located in the Mesoamerica Biodiversity Hotspot, this project exemplifies how biodiversity and carbon credits can work hand in hand for a sustainable future.
