Minerals, metals and advanced materials are key enablers to achieve the objectives of the European Green Deal. Today, only a fraction of the most relevant raw materials is produced in Europe. This can be changed through a circular economy approach, through innovation in recycling, substitution, processing, mining, and exploration. It is the objective of EIT RawMaterials to secure a sustainable raw materials supply by driving innovation, education, and entrepreneurship across European industrial ecosystems. EIT RawMaterials provides a collaborative environment for disruptive and breakthrough innovations by connecting business with academia, research, and investment. It also invests in future generation of innovators for the raw materials sector through initiatives ranging from education of school students to higher qualifications for industry professionals. The company is committed to supporting Europe’s transition towards a circular, green, and digital economy whilst strengthening its global competitiveness and securing employment. On this foundation, EIT RawMaterials has been mandated by the European Commission to lead and manage the European Raw Materials Alliance (ERMA). 🤝 Thank you to everyone who joined us for the second webinar in the Rare Earth Roundtable Series hosted by EIT RawMaterials and powered by the #HorizonEurope project, MAGELLAN Project EU! The discussion on rare earths extracted from urban mines was a fascinating dive into the opportunities and challenges in harnessing rare earths from secondary sources. Our expert speakers—Edoardo Righetti from the Center for European Policy Analysis , Jürgen Gassmann from Fraunhofer IWKS, and Pierre Fiasse of Comet Traitements S.A. and Lukas Brandl from BLC – The Battery Lifecycle Company - provided invaluable insights into the role of urban mining in the future of sustainable rare earth supply. We explored strategies to maximize the impact of these critical raw materials for various industries, from electric vehicles to advanced batteries. Key Findings and highlights were: · Future-Proofing Rare Earth Supply: The demand-supply forecast for rare earth permanent magnets shows that up to 50% of the demand could be covered by materials extracted from the Urban Mine by 2050 · Investing in the Future: Ecodesign and labelling of products need to be set in place today, but will only show a major impact for businesses in 10-15 years, considering the lifetime of the products · Innovative Extraction Techniques: New methodologies for extracting rare earths from urban mines, ensuring a cleaner and more sustainable supply chain. · Research and Industry Synergies: How academia and industry are joining forces to boost urban mining efficiency and impact. · Strategic Implications for Europe: Insights on how urban-sourced rare earths can support Europe’s drive for autonomy in critical raw materials. This roundtable was an inspiring and essential step forward in shaping the future of rare earths within Europe’s green transition! 🔜 The next Rare Earth Roundtable Series webinar will be on 23. January 2025. Stay tuned for more information. #rareearths #urbanmining #sustainability #innovation #greenfuture #rawmaterials #greentransition

The steel industry is essential to Europe’s economy, underpinning sectors like automotive, construction, and renewable energy. However, Europe’s steel sector is facing severe pressures—skyrocketing energy costs, high production expenses, and intense global competition, as highlighted by Judith Kirton-Darling, General Secretary of industriAll Europe. These challenges, paired with ambitious low-carbon targets, have led to a decline in European steel consumption, putting the industry’s future in jeopardy. Europe’s steel sector is not just an industry; it’s a critical component of Europe's strategic autonomy and climate goals. Without decisive, coordinated action, Europe risks losing its steel capacity and the expertise and innovation that support the entire industrial chain. In this OpEd, Judith Kirton-Darling urges the need for a European Steel Action Plan and a comprehensive European Industrial Deal. These are the priorities to support a resilient and sustainable steel industry: ✳ Green Steel Market Creation: Leveraging public procurement to support demand for low-carbon, European-made steel. ✳ Affordable Clean Energy: Advocating for urgent reform in the electricity market to make clean energy available and affordable for steelmakers. ✳ Public-Private Investment: Strengthening partnerships with impactful social and environmental benefits, ensuring the investment reaches the workers and communities who rely on this industry.
