2018’s surge in extreme wildfires was a wake-up call for our CEO and Co-Founder Carsten Brinkschulte. The devastating fires that dominated headlines sparked a question in him: How could technology help prevent this destruction? 💡 That was the genesis of Dryad Networks. “It’s like an electronic nose in the forest,” Carsten explains to IoT Insider, with Silvanet sensors detecting gases, temperature, and humidity changes as early indicators of wildfires. Powered by LoRaWAN mesh networking, our system maintains reliable communication even in dense, off-grid forested areas—critical in achieving ultra-early wildfire detection. https://lnkd.in/eT6W8K_d Big thanks to Caitlin Gittins for the feature. #iot #wildfireprevention #forestprotection #sustainabletech #lorawan #startupjourney #climateaction #greentech #forestconservation #sustainability #wildfiresafety #environmentaltech #carbonreduction #wildfiremonitoring #forestmanagement

Nice write-up in RFID Journal about our work with Terraformation in Hawai'i here. Thanks to Claire Swedberg for the feature. ✍🏻 Terraformation is stepping up wildfire prevention on Hawai'i’s Big Island with the help of Dryad Networks’ wildfire detection tech. At the Pacific Flight site, Dryad’s solar-powered mesh sensors now monitor a 45-acre area prone to fires. This collaboration marks a critical step towards safeguarding new growth forests and their carbon-capturing potential. Our CEO Carsten Brinkschulte envisions Dryad as the forest’s nervous system, capable of supporting diverse applications, from wildfire detection to chainsaw noise monitoring. Terraformation’s fire prevention effort is just one example of how Dryad’s tech empowers reforestation, biodiversity, and community collaboration worldwide. As more organizations turn to IoT for forestry solutions, we are proud to help protect the forests of today and tomorrow. 🌲 https://lnkd.in/eZ2tc5Fh #forestprotection #fireprevention #iot #lorawan #climateaction #wildfiredetection #sustainability #reforestation #carboncapture #forestconservation #biodiversity #smartforestry #environmentaltech #restorationecology #dryadnetworks

As the UN report highlights that global efforts are way off track in tackling climate change, it’s clear that critical areas are still being overlooked—wildfires being a prime example. Two years ago, Dryad Networks published a white paper emphasizing how the devastating impact of wildfires on emissions isn’t given enough attention at COP, and here we are again, with nothing changing. Forest fires, like the record ones in Canada, are creating massive carbon feedback loops, yet the urgency around addressing them remains minimal. If COP29 is to be the turning point the UN envisions, wildfire prevention and management must be front and centre. Without this focus, we risk letting these disasters become permanent emissions sources, undermining global targets and driving us further from the 1.5°C pathway. The time for bold action is now—let’s ensure COP29 finally addresses this critical gap. https://lnkd.in/eSHXjbYQ #climateaction #cop29 #wildfireprevention #carbonemissions #climatechange #globalwarming #climatesolutions #sustainability #forestconservation

As the 2024 wildfire season draws to a close, our CEO, Carsten Brinkschulte, challenges a common misconception: wet winters don’t necessarily reduce wildfire risk—instead, they can amplify it. Carsten explains how climate change leads to weather extremes—more rain in winter, followed by dry, windy springs and summers. This creates lush vegetation that turns into tinder, setting the stage for intense fires later in the year. With more people living in the wildland-urban interface, the stakes are higher than ever. So, what’s next? Carsten highlights cutting-edge technologies, like Dryad Networks’ large-scale IoT network of solar-powered sensors for ultra-early fire detection. These sensors detect the earliest signs of fire, providing critical time for responders to act before fires grow uncontrollable. 🌲 As we reflect on this season’s challenges, it’s clear that combining innovative technology with proactive strategies is essential to protecting our forests and communities from future threats. Read Carsten’s full piece on the hidden risks of wet winters and the role of technology in safeguarding our ecosystems in PreventionWeb: https://lnkd.in/eUiGa93F #climatechange #wildfireprevention #iot #smartforests #dryadnetworks #thoughtleadership #sustainability #wildlandurbaninterface #firedetection #wildfireseason
