Exciting Announcement for the 75th Berlin International Film Festival! We are honored to welcome acclaimed US director, screenwriter, and producer Todd Haynes as the President of the International Jury for the festival’s 2025 edition. With a career spanning nearly 40 years, Haynes has established himself as a bold and distinctive voice in American cinema. From his groundbreaking debut “Poison” – which won the TEDDY AWARD at the Berlinale in 1991 – to critically acclaimed works like “Carol”, four-time Oscar nominated film “Far from Heaven”, and “Velvet Goldmine”, his influence on the industry is undeniable. His films explore themes of identity, gender, and the inner lives of outsiders and women, drawing in world-class talent like Julianne Moore, Cate Blanchett, and Mark Ruffalo. We look forward to Haynes leading our International Jury in celebrating the best in global cinema. February 13-23, 2025. One of the world's largest public film festivals & a crucial film industry forum.
Info
The Berlinale is a unique place of artistic exploration and entertainment. It is one of the largest public film festivals in the world, attracting tens of thousands of visitors from around the globe each year. For the film industry and the media, the eleven days in February are also one of the most important events in the annual calendar and an indispensable trading forum. The Berlin International Film Festival enjoys an eventful history. The festival was created for the Berlin public in 1951, at the beginning of the Cold War, as a “showcase of the free world”. Shaped by the turbulent post-war period and the unique situation of a divided city, the Berlinale has developed into a place of intercultural exchange and a platform for the critical cinematic exploration of social issues. To this day it is considered the most political of all the major film festivals. The Berlinale brings the big stars of international cinema to Berlin and discovers new talents. It accompanies filmmakers of all disciplines on their paths into the spotlight and supports careers, projects, dreams, and visions. Thanks to its numerous industry initiatives, the Berlinale is a significant driver of innovation and an important economic factor internationally as well as for companies in Germany and Berlin. We are very pleased to share that the art of listening will be the overarching theme for the 23rd edition of Berlinale Talents, the vibrant talent hub of the Berlin International Film Festival. Listening intently, considerately, carefully, and most importantly, courageously, builds upon the foundation of last year's “Common Tongues – Speaking Out in the Language of Cinema”, and will allow Berlinale Talents to continue its exploration of communication through film, taking it to a new level with "Listen Courageously – Cinematic Narratives in Times of Dissonance". Designing this year's theme is Berlin-based graphic design duo Ada Favaron and Imad Gebrael, whose key visual portrays courageous listening as a process that must be nurtured, cultivated, and harvested. Exciting news! From next year, the winner of the TEDDY AWARD – BEST DOCUMENTARY/ESSAY FILM will also be entitled to enter the competition for an Oscar®. This is the third award presented at the Berlinale to qualify the winning film to be submitted for the Academy Award®/Oscar® longlist alongside the Golden Bear for Best Short Film and the Berlinale Documentary Award. The TEDDY AWARD, the first queer prize at an A festival, has been presented during the Berlinale since 1987. It is awarded in different categories to films from all sections that address LGBTQIA* topics as part of a broader social context and thus contribute to greater tolerance, acceptance, solidarity and equality in society. The Golden Bear for Best Short Film has been awarded since 1956 to works that create new focal points in the cinema landscape. A three-person jury selects the winner from around 20 films in the competition. With the Berlinale Documentary Award, the festival has been emphasising its strong commitment to the documentary form since 2017. Each year, a total of 18 productions compete for the prize. Feature-length films can be submitted for the 75th Berlinale until October 30 and short films until November 13, 2024. #Berlinale #TeddyAward #Oscars

It is with greatest sadness that we have to say farewell far too soon to Christine Tröstrum, our long-time project manager and mastermind behind Berlinale Talents and a close colleague, collaborator and companion to so many people at the Berlinale and beyond. At this moment our thoughts are with her family, friends and everyone in the wider film community who was as taken and inspired by her optimism, warmth and creativity as we were. We miss her already!
