- The Wanderer es la décima y última canción del álbum Zooropa de U2, editado en 1993. Es una de las pocas canciones de U2 en las que Bono no pone la voz en la grabación original: en este caso corre a cargo de Johnny Cash. Al final de la canción, The Edge pone la segunda voz. La letra describe la búsqueda de Dios por parte de un hombre en un mundo que se vacía de sentido. Poco tiempo después de la muerte de Johnny, en el 2003, el grupo interpretó la canción en el tributo que muchos músicos le hicieron en un programa de televisión titulado I Walk the Line: A Night for Johnny Cash. En esta versión, The Edge añade unos falsetes tras el estribillo. Este tema ha sido incluido en dos recopilatorios de Johnny Cash: The Essential Johnny Cash (Legacy/Columbia, 2003) y The Legend of Johnny Cash (American/Island, 2005). Es una de las pocas canciones de U2 sin Bono en la voz principal, en cambio con el cantante de country Johnny Cash. Al contrario, The Edge compare nel brano come seconda voce per tutta la durata della traccia. Il testo descrive un uomo alla ricerca di Dio in un mondo postapocalittico. Nella versione contenuta nell'album, dopo qualche secondo di silenzio dal termine del brano, come traccia fantasma, si può ascoltare il suono costante di una sirena della durata di 30 secondi. Non è mai stata inserita nella scaletta di un concerto né degli U2 né di Johnny Cash. La band irlandese però, durante lo speciale I Walk the Line: A Night for Johnny Cash andato in onda sulle Tv americane dopo la morte del cantante country nel 2003, ha voluto rendergli omaggio suonandola per la prima volta dal vivo. Questa speciale versione, cantata stavolta interamente da Bono, è arricchita inoltre dal falsetto eseguito da The Edge. Una versione più lunga di The Wanderer, comprendente un verso in più e della durata di 5:16, è inclusa nella colonna sonora del film Così lontano, così vicino di Wim Wenders. - "So, what happened was he sang it through loads and loads of times and they tried to put together a vocal that felt in keeping with the music, but it never quite seemed to connect. Bono said to me, when I came back, "Do you want to have a go at trying to put the vocal together?" So I decided to try and do the opposite of what everyone had done, which was to make a completely cold, dispassionate-sounding Johnny Cash. Almost like he's Johnny Cash the robot. It took quite a lot of time to eliminate all feeling from it, but in a way that helped marry it to the music. So there's this somebody who's completely dispassionate and because I wasn't there during the recording, I had no emotional attachment to any of the performances. I had no idea what had gone into making them, so I could be completely removed from the whole process. And then Bono heard it and went "Perfect!"
