La manca d'una definició clara dels Nematophyta ha portat a que sigui usat com un calaix de sastre de tàxons d'aquella època al voltant del Silúric fent del terme "Nematophytic" més un terme per establir la ignorància que no pas amb significat científic rigorós. - Die Nematophyta sind eine informelle Gruppe von rätselhaften Organismen aus dem Silur und Devon. Ihre Größe reicht von wenigen Millimetern bis zu mehrere Meter langen „Stämmen“. Ihr Körper ist vollständig aus verschieden großen und verschieden gestalteten Röhren aufgebaut. Die Nematophyta sind seit über 150 Jahren bekannt, ihre systematische Stellung, ihre Biologie und Ökologie ist nach wie vor wenig bekannt. Der größte Vertreter der Nematophyta ist die bis zu acht Meter große Prototaxites. Interpretationen ihrer systematischen Stellung reichen von verschiedenen Algengruppen (etwa Braunalgen) bis zu frühen Basidiomyceten oder Flechten. Die Fossilien ähneln verschiedenen Abbaustadien von modernen Lebermoosen, könnten also auch von Vorläufern der heutigen Lebermoose stammen. - The Nematophyta or nematophytes are a paraphyletic group of land organisms, probably including some plants as well as algae known only from the fossil record, from the Silurian period until the early Devonian Rhynie chert. The type genus Nematothallus, which typifies the group, was first described by Lang in 1937, who envisioned it being a thallose plant with tubular features and sporophytes, covered by a cuticle which preserved impressions of the underlying cells. He had found abundant disaggregated remains of all three features, none of which were connected to another, leaving his reconstruction of the phytodebris as parts of a single organism highly conjectural. No reproductive or vegetative structures common to the land plants are known, and certain members of the nematophyte plexus (including Nemataplexus, axial conjugations of banded and branching tubes) seem to belong to the fungi. The lack of a clear definition of the nematophytes has led to it being used as a wastebasket taxon, with all manner of tubes and cell-patterned cuticles from around the Silurian being dubbed "nematophytic" more as a statement of ignorance than as a scientifically meaningful statement. Nematophytes, including cuticle and banded tubes, have been found in coprolites that were apparently produced by millipedes. (en)
- Nematophyta é um grupo de organismos terrestres, provavelmente plantas (apesar da sua bioquímica possuir uma afinidade algal), conhecidas apenas do registo fóssil, entre o Silúrico superior e o princípio do Devónico. O seu género-tipo, , que tipifica o grupo, foi descrito pela primeira vez por Lang em 1933, que visionou uma planta talosa, com estruturas tubulares e esporófitos, cobertos por uma cutícula que preservou as impressões das células subjacentes. Apesar de Lang ter encontrado restos abundantes das três estruturas, estes estavam desagregados e nenhum deles estava ligado a outra estrutura, levando a que a sua reconstrução dos restos vegetais fosse altamente conjectural. A falta de uma definição clara sobre os nematófitos levou a que este grupo fosse utilizado como um "caixote do lixo", onde todo o tipo de tubos e cutículas com padrões de células impressos da altura do Silúrico eram denominados nematofíticos, mais com o estatuto de ignorância, do que com um estatuto cientificamente relevante. A taxonomia de Lineu tenta acomodar a maioria dos grupos fósseis à medida que tende a formar dos taxa modernos. Assim sendo, apesar das tentativas de formalizar a nomenclatura de Nematothalli, a hierarquia de classe, ordem e família é melhor entendida como um grupo-tronco dos embriófitos (plantas terrestres modernas), com as algas verdes a serem, por sua vez, um grupo-tronco para os nematófitos. De facto, uma vez que nenhuma estrutura reprodutiva ou vegetativa comuns em plantas terrestres é observada, pode até nem ser seguro assumir esta relação entre grupos. (pt)
