- Maius war im altrömischen Kalender zunächst der dritte Monat des Amtsjahres sowie Vorläufer des Monats Mai. Er ist nach der griechischen Göttin Maia, der Tochter des Titanen Atlas, benannt, die mit der römischen Fruchtbarkeitsgöttin Bona Dea, deren Fest im Mai gefeiert wurde, identifiziert werden kann. Im Gegenzug leitet der römische Dichter Ovid eine andere Etymologie her, laut der der Monat nach den maiores, den „Älteren“, und der Folgemonat Juni nach den iuniores, den „Jünglingen“, benannt ist (Fasti VI.88) und dem etruskischen Monat entspricht. Im Jahr 153 v. Chr. wurde der Jahresbeginn des Amtsjahres auf den 1. Januar verlegt, weshalb der Monat Maius im Amtsjahr an die fünfte Stelle rückte. Die Kalenderreform des Gaius Iulius Caesar ließ Maius ab 45 v. Chr. im julianischen Kalender mit 31 Tagen in unveränderter Länge bestehen. (de)

On the oldest Roman calendar that had begun with March, it was the third of ten months in the year. May had 31 days. The Romans considered May an infelicitous month. Although it began with one of the most notoriously licentious holidays of the Roman calendar, the Games of Flora (Ludi Florae), the middle of the month was devoted to propitiating the lemures, the restless shades of the dead.
