Lienz (German: [ˈliːɛnt͡s]; Southern Bavarian: Lianz) is a medieval town in the Austrian state of Tyrol. It is the administrative centre of the Lienz district, which covers all of East Tyrol. The municipality also includes the cadastral subdivision of Patriasdorf.

Jänner 2022) ist Lienz die siebtgrößte Stadt Tirols und der wirtschaftliche, kulturelle und soziale Mittelpunkt Osttirols. Lienz liegt an der Mündung der Isel in die Drau. Während der Römerzeit war das benachbarte Aguntum das Zentrum der Region. Lienz rückte während des Mittelalters in den Mittelpunkt, als es Hauptsitz der Görzer Grafen wurde. Nach dem Aussterben der Görzer Grafen fiel Lienz 1500 an Maximilian I., der das Gebiet um Lienz mit Tirol vereinte. Besitzer der Herrschaft Lienz waren in der Folge jedoch die Familie Wolkenstein-Rodenegg und das Haller Damenstift. Seinen größten Bevölkerungsaufschwung und einen massiven Ausbau der örtlichen Infrastruktur erlebte Lienz Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts und Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts nach dem Ausbau der Pustertalbahn. Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs erhöhte sich die Bevölkerungszahl auf Grund der Ansiedelung von Südtirolern, zudem wurde 1939 die Nachbargemeinde Patriasdorf mit Lienz zusammengeschlossen. Gebrauchsgüter-Erzeugung, Handel und Tourismus sind die wichtigsten Wirtschaftszweige. Daneben finden zahlreiche Beschäftigte Arbeit im Gesundheits-, Bildungs- und Verwaltungsbereich. Die Landwirtschaft ist hingegen auf Grund des hohen Siedlungsdrucks stark rückläufig. (de)
