- Kasaragod (Malayalam: കാസർഗോഡ് Kāsargōḍ [ˈkaːsərɡoːɖ]; auch: Kasargod, Kasargode) ist eine Stadt im südindischen Bundesstaat Kerala mit etwa 54.000 Einwohnern (Volkszählung 2011). Sie liegt an der Malabarküste im Norden Keralas unweit der Grenze zum Nachbarbundesstaat Karnataka an der Mündung des Flusses (Payaswini) in das Arabische Meer. Die nächstgrößeren Städte sind Mangaluru (Mangalore) 50 Kilometer nördlich und Kozhikode (Calicut) 185 Kilometer südlich. Kasaragod ist Verwaltungssitz des Distrikts Kasaragod. Kasaragod war früh ein wichtiger Hafen und ein Zentrum des Überseehandels mit Arabien. Im 14. Jahrhundert kam die Stadt unter die Herrschaft des Vijayanagar-Reiches. Nach dessen Niedergang im 16. Jahrhundert übernahmen die Nayaks von Ikkeri die Kontrolle über das Küstengebiet. Während der Herrschaftszeit der Nayaks entstand im 17. Jahrhundert das Fort Chandragiri am anderen Ufer des Chandagiri-Flusses. Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts eroberte Tippu Sultan, der Herrscher von Mysore Kasaragod. Nach Tipu Sultans Niederlage gegen die Briten kam die Stadt 1799 an Britisch-Indien und wurde als des Distrikts South Kanara (Dakshina Kannada) in die Präsidentschaft Madras eingegliedert. Nach der indischen Unabhängigkeit 1947 wurden die Bundesstaaten 1956 durch den States Reorganisation Act nach Sprachgrenzen neu gegliedert. Kasaragod wurde dabei wegen seiner überwiegend Malayalam-sprachigen Bevölkerung aus dem Distrikt Dakshina Kannada gelöst und dem Distrikt Kannur des neugegründeten Bundesstaats Kerala zugeschlagen. 1984 wurde die Stadt Verwaltungssitz des Distrikts Kasaragod. Kasaragod ist eine recht stark muslimisch geprägte Stadt. Im Stadtviertel Thalangara befindet sich die im traditionellen keralesischen Architekturstil erbaute Malik-Dinar-Moschee, die angeblich vom , der im 7. Jahrhundert den Islam nach Kerala gebracht haben soll, gegründet wurde. Die Moschee beherbergt das Grab von Malik Ibn Mohammed, eines Nachfahren Malik Ibn Dinars. Established in 1966, Kasaragod was the first municipal town in the district. It is the northernmost district of Kerala and is also known as Saptha Bhasha Sangama Bhoomi ('The Land of seven Languages'). Situated in the rich biodiversity of Western Ghats, it is known for the Chandragiri and Bekal Fort, Chandragiri River, historic Kolathiri Rajas, natural environment of Ranipuram and Kottancheri Hills, historical and religious sites like the Madiyan Kulom temple, Madhur Temple, Ananthapuram Lake Temple and Malik Deenar Mosque. The historic hill of Ezhimala is located on the southern portion of Kavvayi Backwaters of Nileshwaram. Kasaragod is located 50 km south of the major port city and a commercial hub Mangalore and 364 km north of the major port city Kochi. Kasaragod district has the maximum number of rivers in Kerala - 12. The town is located on the estuary where the Chandragiri River, which is also the longest river in the district, empties into the Arabian Sea. Kasaragod is home to several forts, including Arikady fort, Bekal Fort, Chandragiri Fort, and Hosdurg Fort. Bekal Fort is the largest fort in Kerala. Talakaveri, which is home to Talakaveri Wildlife Sanctuary where the 805 km long Kaveri river originates, is located closer to Ranipuram on the Kerala-Karnataka border. Robert Caldwell describes the extent of Malayalam in the 19th century as extending from Chandragiri (fort and river) in the north to Neyyar river beyond Thiruvanantapuram in the south and from Malabar Coast in the west to Western Ghats in the east besides the inhabited islands of Lakshadweep in the Arabian Sea.
