The first stretches of I-81 were constructed in the early 1960s, with additional progress made on the interstate throughout that decade. However, most of the route was constructed later than the rest of the interstate highways initially allocated to Tennessee, with most stretches not opening until after 1970. The last stretch of I-81 in Tennessee, which was more than half of the entire route in the state, was completed in 1975. From 1985 to 2007, the interstate had one auxiliary route, I-181, which was renumbered as part of I-26. (en)
