- The Green Dome (Arabic: ٱَلْقُبَّة ٱلْخَضْرَاء, romanized: al-Qubbah al-Khaḍrāʾ) is a green-coloured dome built above the tombs of the Islamic prophet Muhammad and the early Rashidun Caliphs Abu Bakr (r. 632–634) and Umar (r. 634–644), which used to be Aisha's chamber. The dome is located in the southeast corner of Al-Masjid al-Nabawi (Mosque of the Prophet) in Medina, Saudi Arabia. Millions visit it every year, since it is a tradition to visit the mosque after the pilgrimage to Mecca. The structure dates back to 1279 C.E., when an unpainted wooden cupola was built over the tomb. It was later rebuilt and painted using different colours twice in the late 15th century and once in 1817. The dome was first painted green in 1837, and hence became known as the "Green Dome". (en)

De koepel bevindt zich in de zuidoostelijke hoek van de Al-Masjid al-Nabawi (Moskee van de Profeet) in Medina. Het bouwwerk dateert uit 1279 toen er een ongeverfde houten koepel werd door gebouwd over het graf. Het werd later herbouwd en geschilderd met behulp van verschillende kleuren, twee keer in de late 15e eeuw en één keer in 1817. È adornata con scritte arabe di letteratura religiosa e di riferimenti coranici. La sua costruzione fu ordinata nel 1279 dal Sultano mamelucco bahri al-Manṣūr Qalāwūn ma subì due restauri, nel XV secolo e nel 1817. Dopo i danni provocati da un incendio, nel 1481, la moschea e la cupola furono restaurate dal Sultano mamelucco burji Qāytbāy. Venti anni dopo, nel 1837, per disposizione del Sultano ottomano Mahmud II, la cupola fu dipinta di verde. Quando il sultano saudita del Najd, Saʿūd b. ʿAbd al-ʿAziz b Muḥammad b. Saʿūd, conquistò Medina nel 1805, impartì l'ordine che tutte le costruzioni a cupola sovrastanti un luogo d'inumazione fossero distrutte, fedele al rigorista principio wahhabita che vede nelle sepolture un grave potenziale rischio che la venerazione sia rivolta a esseri mortali, anziché all'unico Essere cui essa deve essere riservata: Allah. Nel 2007, secondo il giornale The Independent, edito dal Ministero saudita degli Affari Islamici, col sostegno del , Grande Muftī dell'Arabia Saudita, fu stabilito che "la Cupola Verde sarà demolita e che le tre tombe nella Moschea del Profeta saranno rase al suolo".
