- Mit 3054 (Inseln, Eilande, Felseninseln, Felsen und Riffe) Inseln verwaltet die Republik Griechenland rund 82 Prozent aller Inseln des Mittelmeers, ihre Fläche beträgt aber nur ein knappes Viertel der Mittelmeerinseln und nur etwa 19 Prozent der griechischen Landfläche. Dennoch umspannen sie ein großes Gebiet: von Agios Nikolaos als nördlichster Insel bis zur Südspitze von Gavdos im Süden sind es rund 695 Kilometer, zwischen Othoni im äußersten Westen und Strongyli, der östlichsten Insel Griechenlands, liegen rund 992 Kilometer Luftlinie. Nach der letzten griechischen Volkszählung von 2011 sind noch 113 Inseln im Meer und vier Binneninseln dauerhaft bewohnt. Fast alle griechischen Inseln liegen im Ionischen Meer oder in der Ägäis, deren spätmittelalterliche italienische Bezeichnung arcipelago zum Begriff für Inselgruppen schlechthin wurde. Sie gliedern sich grob in die Inselgruppen der Ionischen Inseln im gleichnamigen Meer, während nach antiker Tradition die Inseln der Ägäis in die Gruppen der Kykladen und Sporaden eingeteilt werden. Vier der dreizehn griechischen Regionen (Ionische Inseln, Nördliche und Südliche Ägäis sowie Kreta) erstrecken sich ausschließlich auf Inseln. Moderne Bezeichnungen für große griechische Inselgruppen sind Nordägäische Inseln, Ostägäische Inseln und Dodekanes. Im Gebirgsland Griechenland sind auch nahezu alle größeren Inseln bergig. Die höchste Erhebung auf einer Insel ist mit 2456 m. ü. d. M. der Gipfel des Psiloritis auf Kreta. Einige der Inseln sind vulkanischen Ursprungs, am bekanntesten von ihnen dürften die Inseln des zuletzt im 2. Jahrtausend v. Chr. ausgebrochenen Vulkans Santorin sein (vgl. Minoische Eruption). (de)

This article excludes the Peloponnese, which has technically been an island since the construction of the Corinth Canal in 1893, but is rarely considered to be an island due to its artificial origins.
