Bird Images

[edit]

Hello Malene!

Np about the birds, just found them when checking the new images log. The latin names for animals and plants are a policy to make commons more useable for every language wikipedia. Concerning your question about gallery pages and categories there is a vote going on, how this should be managed in the future. I tend to support the category approach since it is much simpler uploading an image without having to create one or more gallery pages as well.

Babel

[edit]

Hi Marlene, I´ve seen that you are the only user in the super category Category:User. Why do you not use the babel templates instead of only the categories? --:Bdk: 08:19, 13 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Well Im still a newbie here, but I hope it is fixed now :-) Regards Malene

Template/Skabelon NowCommons

[edit]

Hello Malene! Is it possible for you to make a template on Danish Wikipedia to mark the images that are now on Wikimedia Commons? Or is it already in function? What’s the name for it – in other Wikipedias the name is "Template:NowCommons". Thank you in advance! Nordelch 02:04, 6 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Hi Nordelch I'll have a look at it :-) Malene 09:43, 8 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Kaloe Castle

[edit]

This image (Image:Kaloe.jpg) is really nice, but could you provide a better resolution ? See Template:Featured pictures candidates/Image:Kaloe.jpg too. --FoeNyx 10:55, 19 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hej Malene,
:-) Peregrine981 05:08, 20 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Hej Malene,
The better answer to your question is : « as large as possible » =) The more a nice image is big, the more the people love it ;) Thank you for the bigger image :) Cheers —FoeNyx 10:18, 20 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Cover for Wikijunior book

[edit]

Hi Malene,

i really like your proposal for the cover to the Wikijunior books. Do you have the background image in a high resolution to uplaod it to the commons. That would be great.

Kind regards,

norro 18:41, 24 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You mean the tiger? Hmm I'll see if I can find it :-) Malene Thyssen 07:09, 25 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Could you please design a back cover as well? --142.161.175.61 21:24, 29 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to try - what information is nessesary on the back cover? --Malene Thyssen 21:46, 29 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have no idea. You could ask in the Big Cats Talkpage. --142.161.175.61 (aka Munchkinguy)

COM:FPC

[edit]

I have created a new (sub) template at Template:Featured_pictures_candidates/Image:PotsdamSanssouciChineseHouse_mod.jpg to which you should (if you wish) add your explicit nomination. LoopZilla 21:36, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Ah thanks a lot :-) I'll add my nomination. Regards Malene Thyssen 21:47, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Please note that I joinded the two pictures on the FPC page. I would regard it much to confusing if both versions would be featured. :) Andreas Tille 05:45, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Andreas I appologize for having caused this confusion - I totally agree with your comment here and wish I had asked you before I made any changes to your nice photo! Can I help in any way to resolve this confusing situation? Regards Malene Thyssen 07:58, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I generally see no big fault on your side - so stay relaxed I'm not angry about what you did. ;-) It is just that things evolved a little bit and it shows that the image has a problem. So anything which helps detecting a problem is good. I wonder whether I should remove both images from the FPC list, crop the image which was provided by ADSR6581 and put it on the top of the FPC list. But I tend to wait a little bit for further comments. Thanks for your work anyway. Andreas Tille 10:04, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I'm glad you are not angry with me :-) I think your suggestion in your last comment would be a good resolution if nothing happens with the votes for the candidates in the near future. Regards Malene Thyssen 11:54, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Suggestion for a solution PotsdamSanssouciChineseHouse.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for your editing of this image Image:PotsdamSanssouciChineseHouse.jpg. As I told you my plan was to adjust your cutting to the image which was enhanced by ADSR6581 technically. I used

jpegtran -crop 2393x1620+576+288 ../PotsdamSanssouciChineseHouse.jpg > PotsdamSanssouciChineseHouse_cut.jpg

for lossless cropping of an image and got this result - I just do not want to get an extra compression loss to this image. What would you think about this plan? Does the cropped and blur enhanced image fit your taste? Andreas Tille 06:17, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Yes I think it is very nice :-) Malene Thyssen 07:36, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Please see the talk page of ADSR6581 - I made a suggestion for further procedure. Andreas Tille 09:44, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Please see the new version Image:PotsdamSanssouciChineseHouse.jpg. If this fits your expectation my suggestion would be to ask for removal of your version to reduce the confusion and save WikiPedia storage. Andreas Tille June 27, 2005 11:57 (UTC)

  • That's fine :-) I'll put a "delete" on my version of the photo. Regards Malene Thyssen 27 June 2005 12:47 (UTC)

You wondered why this pic has a bad resolution and the logo - it's just because I am a photographer and I don't like my photos to be abused. Danish pronunciation

[edit]

I would be very interested in getting you to record more sound files in Danish. Are you up for it? I have a few specific requests in mind right now and I'm sure I can come up with a lot more. The only concern is your use of coding (or is it noise filtering?). The recording of "Tycho Brahe" is not bad, but it sounds like it's been very heavily processed. Compare with the quality of my own recording of Dansk Sprognævn. You're very welcome to replace that if you feel like it, btw.

Peter Isotalo 01:47, 5 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Peter I would like to help recording. I'm a newbie to Audacity, and have some problems with the recording volume. So I need to practice :-) Regards Malene Thyssen 07:36, 5 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, well let me give you something to practice on, then. Why don't you try recording a pronunciation of København and Hans Christian Andersen? No sound files on those two yet.
Peter Isotalo 12:34, 5 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ok I'll have a go at those two :-) Mvh Malene Thyssen 12:42, 5 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, now that we've gotten you started, I'd really like a sound file that illustrated Danish stød. You know, the phonetic feature. Could you pronounce a word where the only difference in pronunciation is the stød itself? First without it and then with.
Oh, and could you up the volume of your recordings slightly. Either by ehancing the volume in Audacity or (preferably) by holding the mic closer. Watch out for aspiration and breathing interference, though. A pronunciation of "stød" itself would be nice, too.

Thank you for your fine contributions. However, this credit template seems more like advertisement than information. And your portrait will show up on all wikis that use your images. Would you consider at least omitting the portrait? --Eddi 01:06, 14 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
End of part copied from template talk.

I am sorry if you don't like my license-credit-template - it is not advertisement, since I don't get payd for my images, they are all under free licenses at Wikipedia. It was only ment to be a simple way to add license and credit-info on my files at Commons. I made my license and credit-info this way when I saw some other user using this format. Would you mind telling me what else is wrong with my template - since you write "at least"? --Malene Thyssen 06:06, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I often enjoy an image by Malene (thank you for your contributions), but not of Malene outside her user pages (although the image as such is nice). It's hard to describe a feeling, but it has something to do with adding non-essential emotions to the the otherwise technical information about image, source and license. Apart from the portrait I was thinking about the sentence, "An email to malene at mtfoto.dk would be appreciated too." In such a page I would perhaps expect something like "This file was made by Malene Thyssen (malene at mtfoto.dk)." And without discussing too much of definitions, advertisement must not always invite money. For all I know I'm the only one thinking like this, so this is just a humble wish from a single soul. Thanks for listening – hope I didn't hurt you with my comments. --Eddi 03:07, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Eddi
Thanks for your nice comments. I see your point and have removed the portrait. I'll have a look at the text too :-) Regards Malene Thyssen 14:28, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Kategorisering

[edit]

G®iffen 15:34, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mvh Malene Thyssen 19:03, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

...-Alle mine egne billeder kan ses i "Category:PD by G®iffen". :-)

Jeg kikker lige på det. Mvh Malene Thyssen 20:04, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Tak for hjælpen. G®iffen 12:16, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

what lenses do you use?

[edit]

Hello Malene, I saw through your pictures and i think they are really good. I saw that you are using the EOS 300D. I now have the EOS 350D and just bought the lense Canon 17-85, 4-5,6 USM IS. Right now i am not that sure about the performance of this lense. So now i am wondering what lenses you use? Would be nice if you could tell me that? How satisfied are you with them concerning sharpness and reslution? I guess most of your pics you reduce in size or are those cutted versions? Regards --AngMoKio 16:48, 4 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello AngMoKio. I use two different lenses. The one that came with the camera is a Canon EFS 18-55mm. But i also bougt another one - a Canon Zoom lens EF 75 - 300mm. Both lenses are great but I'm missing one for macroshooting. I think all my images have been cropped and resized to some extend :-) Regards --Malene Thyssen 20:33, 4 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your reply :-) A good zoom-lense is also something i need sooner or later. Currently i first have to get settled with my current new lense and with my SLR-camera in general. So far i had only a Canon Ixus and later on a Canon A80 (on my user page you can see some pics of those days). Soon i hope to contribute the first SLR-pics. Regards..Keep the good pics coming :-) --AngMoKio 00:22, 5 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Low resolution

[edit]

My criticism on the resolution, it is not negative, but I like your pictures, and I want to benefit from it fully; -) --Luc Viatour 07:37, 9 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thats ok :-) - the fact is that many of my originals are not that good - so many of my pics are cleaned up and cropped, so they look ok, before they are posted here. Regards Malene Thyssen 21:00, 9 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Not a skylark

Hi, Malene. Tusen takk for bildene! Beautiful photos. Your "skylark" (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Sangl%C3%A6rke.jpg) was recently used on the English Wikipedia in the Skylark article. The trouble is, the bird in the photo is not a skylark but a meadow pipit (Anthus pratensis). Just thought you should know! Gnusmas 13 June 2006

Cheers, Tlogmer 23:54, 25 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Tlogmer.
I'm afraid I can´t make the pic much larger, the original is not very good, it had to be cropped, color coordinated and sharpened to look nice. I don´t think that can be done without compressing the original (at least i don´t know how to) :-( --Malene Thyssen 13:22, 26 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Using coordinates for locations

[edit]

You have very nice photo's Malene! Just a suggestion in particular for the photo's about locations and Danish churches. May it be possible to add the coordinates. If people want to visit that location it is easy to find. I do it by using Google Earth, finding the position where I took the image and use the coordinates found in the description. I found it good to check whether the scale value is right for Google maps by following the coordinates link. See for example http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Bandama_Caldera.jpg or http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Sundial_San_Agustin.JPG Best regards, --Wouterhagens 00:23, 12 March 2007 (UTC) That's a good idea - I'll have a look at it later :-) --Malene Thyssen 07:58, 12 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dead pixel

[edit]
Cropped part of original img

Hi Alvesgaspar

I think i have solved the mystery of the dead pixel in my photo Image:The World in Aalborg.jpg. It is probably a fender like this one. I think it is being used to hold some kind of net that surrounds the destroyer.

Regards Malene Thyssen 19:04, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • You must be right since there are two of them. Anyway it is strange that such a vivid colour is perceived at this distance (maybe a UFO disguised as a fender?...). Alvesgaspar 19:16, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Lol maybe :-) - or maybe its because i increased contrast in the photo, and that has somehow affected the red color - looking closer at the buildings in the background at the left - their red color are quite strong too. --Malene Thyssen 21:26, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Many of the pictures you are now proposing to be delisted are wonderfull, it makes little sense removing the FP status from them just because of size. I thing that delisting older FP's should only be allowed in obvious errors of judgement. Please reconsider. - Alvesgaspar 21:15, 3 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Many of the old pics definitely do not meet the standards - it's not just about size. So I'm just trying to clean out some of my very old and not so good featured pics. But thank's for your concern, your nice words warms my heart :-) --Malene Thyssen 21:24, 3 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Malene, now i have a guilty conscience of opposing your picture . . . because now you delist all your FP's, thats very sad. Is it because my essay? When i wrote "The technical achievement is ok, like i anticipate when viewing your userpage-gallery" i meant that we dont have to discuss the technical quality because your gallery looks great and has the quality.--Makro Freak talk 22:17, 3 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Don't feel bad Makro Freak - this has been coming for some time :-) I think some of my old pics are just not good enough for featured status - so this is just my form of cleaning up. If some of the pics are not beeing delisted - thats fine with me, but i didn't feel competent enough to sort them (I'm definitely NOT a pro photographer :-), so I'm trying all of them, except my latest three featured pics. Regards --Malene Thyssen 22:37, 3 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Meet our photographers

[edit]

I've just noticed you removed your profile from that page, why was that? We feel lonely now. :( - Alvesgaspar 09:43, 27 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Alvesgaspar
Well I didn't think I would still have 10 featured pics after my little "test" with denomination of my old pics. I have once been accused for being vain and I must admit I felt very vain putting my biography on the "Meet our photographers" page. :-) Recently I haven't been very active on Wikipedia or Commons, so I'm keeping a low profile for the moment. I hope I will get back to photography soon, and, if I get some good shots, contribute here again. If it helps the project an admin might be able to reconstruckt my biography - I dont have time right now to do it myself, but wouldn't mind that. Regards Malene Thyssen 17:41, 27 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Malene, it it not necessary an admin to restore your profile, I (we) can do it in no time. But I won't do it unless you tell me to do so. Anyway there is no vanity in your text. If you feel proud of the excellent picures you have made and shared with Commons, that is all right. When I shoot a picture I feel it is somehow special, I run to the computer to share it with you all. Also we need people like you to help opposing the present "pixel counting" technological tendency and restore the artsy side of Photography. I hope your "sabatic leave" from Photography won't last long. Regards, Alvesgaspar 22:49, 28 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have nominated one of your images for FP status

[edit]

I've nominated this image of yours for Featured picture status over on English Wikipedia, but the other editors have brought up a couple issues. One is they feel is the image has been oversharpened, and the other is the image is slightly smaller than is preferable. Do you possibly have a larger, unedited version available for consideration? This would very much help matters.

I personally really like this shot of yours, and think it deserves FP status if at all possible. Here is the consideration page if you would like to add your input: Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Red fox. Thanks again. -- PiotrSkut 23:49, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi PiotrSkut. I'm on my way on vacation today. I will be gone for a week. When i get back i will be happy to have a look at the pic to see if i can improve it. I hope that will work. Regards --Malene Thyssen 08:30, 13 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Stolen Artwork

[edit]

Hi Malene, My name is Camille and I am a user of deviantArt. I recently found someone who took your image of the horse jumping. He is claiming it as his, and he will not take it down because "I want people to see it because I love it!". He is also claiming that it's his copyright. I reported it to deviantArt officials a while ago, but they have done nothing. I was hoping you could message them as well because this user is starting to get abusive saying that I'm a liar and such. Your picture is here http://aric414.deviantart.com/art/Amazing-jumper-93905080 and I hope we can get this resolved. Thank you, Camille

I have jumped into the discussion there. It is my impression that the user is unaware of basic licensing rules (assuming good faith). I have tried to explain to the user what the problem is, linking to the image page here, and I have also reported the artwork as a copyvio to the sites admins. The users latest response indicates an emerging understanding that this is not a game, and I hope the user will just delete I shortly such that we can move on. -- Slaunger (talk) 07:02, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Camille and Slaunger thanks a lot for letting me know :) I wrote a comment on the page - i hope that will solve the problem. Regards --Malene Thyssen (talk) 07:45, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK, Malene. Since you have now jumped into the discussion there, I will let you continue the thread there. Hilsen -- Slaunger (talk) 09:26, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Russian offices in Denmark

Might you be in the position to be able to help with photos of these representations of Russia in Denmark? Or perhaps you can point me towards someone who may be able to help with these photos? Grevys Zebra

[edit]

Dear Malene, I am writing a short and informal article on pattern formation (I am a physicist). The main theme is on the stripes of an atomic layer on a crystal surface. In the introduction I want to give a flavour of the generality of the underlying processes: patterns on animal skin are produced by a similar mechanism. I have checked on Wikipedia and came across your photo of a zebra. I would like to use a part of it in an introductory figure. Is it possible that I do so, with a statement such as "photo courtesy of Malene Thyssen"? Please let me know. (If you prefer not, I will go on the street trying to make a photo of some tomcat!)... Thanks a lot, Tevfik Mentes

Martins and Swallows

[edit]

Dear Malene,
I am hoping to make a slideshow video of a song of mine called "The Swallows", this being a setting of a poem by the Armenian Gourgen Mahari. My intention is to make the video available free on YouTube.
The picture you have photographed of a house martin in flight over water would be particularly good for inclusion since the poem actually mentions flight and rivers (and, of course, martins belong to the swallow family.....), although in fact the poem is metaphorical (the Swallows are actually the Armenians themselves put to flight in 1915, so I shall also be including photos relating to the Armenian diaspora).
If you have any photos of other swallows in flight that I might also use, that would be wonderful. Perhaps we could discuss this idea by email and I can also send you the song and words so you can see what I mean? I can include a credit to you in the YouTube description of the video, although an inclusion in the video itself might be a bit complicated, since I wish to give precedence to the poem.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards

Do you have a better version of File:Vadehavet.jpg?

[edit]

Deutsch  English  español  français  magyar  Nederlands  polski  português  svenska  suomi

Thank you for your submission of File:Vadehavet.jpg. While all submissions are useful, do you think you might be able to supply a better quality version of the same, or similar, content? In many cases, the largest and highest resolution possible is the most useful version to have available. (MediaWiki has automatic resizing functionality, so there is no need for multiple versions of the same image at different sizes, users can select any size and the software will generate and cache the needed resolution on the fly.)

If you can supply the same exact image as File:Vadehavet.jpg at a larger resolution (or media at a higher bitrate, etc.), please just upload it over the original, users will get the new higher quality version with no further effort on your part. If on the other hand, the content is only similar, it is best to select a new image name, as there may be uses already where some aspect of the existing media was key to the usage. In the latter case, if you can provide a crosslink reference to the new image in the older one and vice versa, that will be extremely helpful.

Again, thank you very much for your contribution, it is appreciated.

Hello, Malene!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Photograph source question

[edit]

Hi Malene. I am working on taking the Haflinger horse article to FA status on the English WP, and I would like to include the photo File:Rijden, harry 069.jpg in it, which you uploaded to commons. However, the photographer is listed as a user named "Avmeer" and there is no indication of how that user gave you permission to use their work. Is this something that you could add to the image? It's a beautiful shot, and I would love to include it, but for FA the image licensing needs to be spotless. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me! Profile size and activity criterion for Commons:Meet our photographers

[edit]

Dear member of Commons:Meet our photographers,

Two issues have recently been raised at Commons talk:Meet our photographers:

Profile size creep
The page is becoming increasing cluttered due to a tendency among some members to make personal profiles, which are unreasonably large. You are kindly requested to consider the size used by your profile and consider if it has a reasonable size. Note that the same message is being send to all members, so it is up to you to use your own good judgement in this. We are not interesting in setting up exact quantitatve rules. It should be a matter of common sense.
Activity criterion
It has been suggested to introduce an activity criterion in addition to the minimum 10 FPs criterion to be included on the list. You are kindly requested to voice your opinion on this proposal.

Hello. The featured picture Siberian Tiger by Malene Th.jpg, which was produced, uploaded, or nominated by you, has been nominated for delisting and/or replacement. Please view that page to vote or comment on the discussion.

Hi, I asked for delisting: Commons:Featured picture candidates/removal/File:Pongo pygmaeus (orangutang).jpg. The attitude is funny, but the quality and the size is very far from the actual standard. Sorry. Regards, Yann (talk) 21:41, 25 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Vi savner dig!

[edit]

Hej Malene!

Tak Slaunger, det varmer at vide nogen husker mig her!

Bear picture

[edit]

Hi Malene Just to let you know, I used one of your bear pictures in an article I wrote about rewilding in Scotland: https://www.reforestingscotland.org/from-beavers-to-bears-we-need-a-map/ Many thanks for sharing them. Best wishes Alan — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 88.145.101.34 (talk) 17:05, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Not Sure what are the rights of use for your Gundestrupkarret2.jpg

[edit]

Hello, I would like to use a modified element of your image Gundestrupkarret2.jpg for commercial use. I would be taking only the image of the man, modifying it in Photoshop, then applying it to a finished graphic work that would be printed and sold on multiple items. Is this possible with your GNU Free Documentation License? If not, what, if possible, must I do to make it so?

Thank you, Lilith
