Foal born outside

  English: Right as we headed down the last valley for Cajatambo, we witnessed the miracle of birth.

  Deutsch: Gerade als wir das letzte Tal in Richtung Cajatambo herunterkamen, beobachteten wir das Wunder der Geburt.

  English: Before I could get my camera out, this colt was pushed out of its mother. You can see it's still covered in afterbirth.

  Deutsch: Bis ich die Kamera heraushatte, war das Hengstfohlen aus der Mutter herausgepreßt. Man kann sehen, daß es noch mit der Nachgeburt bedeckt ist.

  English: For no apparent reason, the other horses suddenly tried to push the mother away from the colt. He couldn't stand up yet, so she stood her ground.

  Deutsch: Ohne erkennbaren Grund, versuchten die anderen Pferde plötzlich, die Mutter vom Fohlen wegzuschieben. Es konnte noch nicht aufstehen, deshalb hielt sie stand.

  English: The colt tried to stand up because of the threat, but it kept slipping back down on the afterbirth.

  Deutsch: Das Fohlen versuchte wegen dieser Bedrohung aufzustehen, aber es rutsdchte immer wieder auf der Nachgeburt aus.

  English: Getting excited, the horse carrying our gear ran into the fray. I just missed it but the mother horse reared back and kicked him a few times as hard as possible. It broke one of the boxes on his back.

  Finally, the colt got free of the afterbirth. And just in time, because some dogs came sniffing around

  Finally, the colt stood up and got some love from momma. This was literally under 10 minutes from when it was born. If only we could walk so fast.

Colors

First coat change

A foal's color may seem to change drastically with the first coat change as the birth color is not fully developed.
