While I have been mostly active on the English Wikipedia since I created my account 11 years ago, I have about 800 edits on Commons as well. Many of those were spent on either uploading my own images, or on making regular updates on existing ones (mainly public domain charts published and maintained by the US government, like example 1 and example 2). I was about to update this file when I learned that I can no longer do this. Please allow me to continue by giving me autopatrol rights. Thank you. Hi, I have been contributing to Wikimedia Commons for over a year, uploading a large number of works related to vexillology and heraldry, all in SVG . During my time working i found myself overwriting old files that had incorrect heraldic attributes or that had some sort of SVG related rendering errors. I'm asking for autopatrol rights so I can overwrite files uploaded by other users Thank you. Ddurbmonnejg (talk) 17:43, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I have been editing files (mostly maps) uploaded by other contributers. A month ago I discovered that I can no longer download new versions of files. I am an experienced participant in kkwiki (almost 28000 edits), although I don’t have more than 100 edits on Commons. Please give me autopatrol rights so I can overwrite files. Thank you. Hello. I have been making edits to Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons since late 2020. At this point, I have a little less than 1,000 edits on Wikimedia. The vast majority (if not all) of my edits on this site have been with editing existing election maps (namely in the US) and uploading some of my own. For a lot of my edits to maps uploaded by others, they have been to update them with new information, replace them with more detailed boundaries, or to correct mistakes in the old versions (namely counties being marked for the wrong party). However, since the update to rules on overwriting, it has been significantly more tedious to make corrections to maps (since I have now had to request overwriting permissions for every single map I want to fix or update in some way), so I would like to request Autopatrol permissions. Thank you. PrusBis6187 (talk) 22:30, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Now and then I need to upload over an existing image (within guidelines), such as updating a graphic that was updated by the originator (tagging with {Current} to indicate that it should be "kept" current), or posting a found clearer image, an image that I cleared-up or improved, or a clearer improvement of the original image. (I was surprised to see the lockout rule, and more surprised to see no warning until the very end. I have two pending.) Thank you. -A876 (talk) 01:50, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Wikimedia Commons team, I hope this message finds you well. I would like to request Autopatrol permissions. I am a graphic designer and photographer, and part of my work often involves making improvements and minor changes to images and photographs, subsequently overwriting them. Having these permissions would allow me to contribute more efficiently, as without them, this action would not be possible. I appreciate your consideration and look forward to your response. Thank you. CarlosEduardoPA (talk) 23:27, 31 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Seeing two blocks for copyright violations (most recently in 2021) and then a subsequent copyright violation in December 2022 is concerning for me. Abzeronow (talk) 22:02, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @Abzeronow, I understand your concern, and it is certainly understandable. I must honestly admit that, regarding the previous blocks, I didn't have much knowledge about licensing issues at that time. In fact, I have since been actively educating myself on the subject to avoid similar issues in the future. Regarding the December 2022 incident, I want to clarify that it was due to my lack of understanding. I took a screenshot of a render created within a video game without realizing that it infringed copyright. Although there are still aspects I don't fully grasp, my request aims to obtain permission to make minor corrections to already uploaded photos and overwrite the corresponding files.
Regardless of the decision you make, I am willing to accept it. I appreciate your understanding and support in this matter. Warm regards. CarlosEduardoPA (talk) 20:03, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings! I have been editing on Wikipedia (almost exclusively English Wikipedia), working with Wikimedia, and uploading files to Commons since 2018. As of this writing, I have approximately 3,900 edits on the former and roughly 390 on the latter.
I would like to apply for Autopatrol Rights status for a few reasons. First of all, there is factually incorrect data in many of the files I work on (mostly in sections pertaining to elections), and I would like to correct this. Furthermore, I come across many maps with inaccurate boundaries in these categories. There are additionally many map files in PNG format that remain "unclean", for instance with noisy whitespace or inconsistent borders. I am able to fix these issues quickly with tools that can help streamline fill and text colours on these PNG images.
Given the reasons listed here, I would like to be able to overwrite existing files and replace them with higher-quality versions for these purposes. Thank you. A Red Cherry (talk) 19:10, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I would like to have the autopatrol right, as it would allow me to overwrite files with small changes. Reason I'm asking it now is because I wanted to crop the European Parliament logos. I'm mainly active on Commons with adding logos on the site, as well as categorising (my main wiki is Dutch Wikipedia). This categorising (which I often do with tools like Cat-a-lot) leads to a lot of small edits, but as Xtools says I've at least created 448 pages, I think I'm in the clear about the 500 non-botlike edits. I've been working on heraldic images, with over 6000 edits. WikiProject Heraldry maintains a library of SVG coat of arms elements designed to be suitable for use in creating future coats of arms. Many of these images have issues with filesize, misplaced fills, and other common SVG editing issues. These images are frequently copied wholesale into other images, so fixing these issues is important. These issues are present in many reference tables, so overwriting them makes it significantly easier for editors to find cleaned versions. Given this, I would like autopatrol privileges to continue my work. Thank you. Ilzolende (talk) 10:24, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I frequently upload SVG versions of bitmap images, which sometimes necessitates overwriting a poorly-traced or buggy vectorisation of essentially the same image. Case-in-point, I was blocked from uploading a newer version of R_S_configuration.svg that better-resembled its PNG version. This didn't used to be the case, but apparently, Wikimedia's policy on overwriting other people's uploads was changed recently. It'd be nice if I had autopatrol rights. Thank you. I have been involved with Wikimedia Commons since 2007 and have mostly uploaded illustrations, mainly for Wikipedia:WikiProject Dinosaurs and Wikipedia:WikiProject Palaeontology. The science of palaeontology moves fast and there is the need to regularly update older artworks. Occasionally, I have been asked by other members to update images not uploaded by me originally, but by inactive users. There are several images can be seen on my user page that fall into this category. Right now, I can not overwrite these images that I have been heavily involved with, such as File:Livyatan size.svg which I am in the process of updating. Hi. I have been contributing to the German Wikipedia since 2006 and I am quite active in Commons since 2021 with 25000 edits and 2000 uploaded files so far. I would appreciate being granted Autopatrol rights in order to crop and overwrite historical images by the US army from WW1, where the metadata on a sheet is part of the image. In this cases it is sufficient to have this version in file history. Surely there will be other projects in the future where cropping and overwriting will be necessary. @Eothan: Do you have a response? Abzeronow (talk) 19:02, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi - Yes the original is actually an photomechanical engraving (of which there are probably many version and copies in Library's and museums etc) and when first published would have been b/w. The source image is an RGB copy of the original engraving made in the C19th and printed onto albumen paper. This paper (as is the case with almost all albumen paper) has become discoloured in the highlights and leading to the yellow cast over the whole picture. 9of99 over wrote the first version with a b/w copy which they desaturated and cropped. The higher re version I uploaded is in keeping with that intent and has also been desaturated and to make the image clearer and to make sure I didn't clutter commons with multiple copies of the same image. The Kate Kelly image is an original photochemical albumen print and I used it to overwrite low res images which were poorer quality versions taken from this original carte-de-visite. As such the crop and image I uploaded is more faithful to the original than the overwritten ones. Again it didn't seem to be sensible to upload another version of what is essentially the same image (but of better quality and sourced back to the original location of the photo in the institution that stores it) to Wikicommons. Also I thought it was important to update the caption referencing and link information of the item as this may prove helpful for researchers wanting to re-use and caption the image correctly in publications outside Wikipedia. I would like to apply for the Autopatrol user right to overwrite track maps of tropical cyclones. I have recently installed w:Wikipedia:WikiProject Tropical cyclones/Tracks and have uploaded two files with this program ( and ), have 437 edits to Commons, and uploaded 98 files. Despite not meeting the recommended requirements, I have experience with creating track maps and have created track maps for w:1962 North Indian Ocean cyclone season, w:1963 North Indian Ocean cyclone season, w:1965 North Indian Ocean cyclone season, w:1966 North Indian Ocean cyclone season, w:1967 North Indian Ocean cyclone season, and w:1968 North Indian Ocean cyclone season. Hi, I've been working on Commons for years with over 40,000 edits. Recently I found that I need the right to overwrite files uploaded by other users. While I am mainly working on old photographs and sometimes paintings, I need to overwrite many images of low quality (usually from bad sources) with high-quality images from better sources. Thank you. 源義信 (talk) 13:08, 12 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Why did you make this overwrite with a totally different file at File:Vua Tự Đức.jpg. And even if you are the original uploader do not make major changes like you did on File:Painter Lê Thị Lựu and her husband Ngô Thế Tân in Bắc Ninh, 1935.jpg one year after the original upload. GPSLeo (talk) 09:28, 14 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
As for File:Vua Tự Đức.jpg, why do you think its totally different? The previous file was imported by other users from a Flickr page. The Flickr user just downloaded the same file as I uploaded later, cropped it, and made some adjustment. What I did was uploading the higher resolution original image without those improvements. 源義信 (talk) 13:44, 14 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
As for File:Painter Lê Thị Lựu and her husband Ngô Thế Tân in Bắc Ninh, 1935.jpg, firstly, I consider it as a minor change because the two versions are the same photograph while the previous one is cropped (but the subject of the image was not changed). Thus when I found the higher resolution image, I replaced the former with it. I read the guideline and did not found that there is a time limit for minor improvements (as for me it's neither substantial changes or completely unrelated files). Secondly, the file is only used in one article and the update won't affect the use of this file in the article. 源義信 (talk) 13:51, 14 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I have been active on Commons and English Wikipedia ever since I joined the project. I have regularly made useful contributions here, be it uploading new images with correct license or nominating copyvios for deletion. Everything is going smoothly but one issue is that I can't overwrite files. The latest example being File:Inauguration of the first phase of Ayodhya Junction railway station.jpg. I also have requested to being allowed to overwrite this file. But this is not just a one time issue. I have got edit filter triggered many times while overwriting (mainly while cropping via CropTool) and have uploaded new files whereever possible. But some cases like the one mentioned above need overwriting. Therefore I am requesting this right. Maybe doesn't matter but just to inform, I have 6.5k+ edits on Enwiki and 900+ here on commons. @Abzeronow I believe you are taking about File:Pashupati Kumar Paras.jpg. The file I uploaded was taken from Parliament of India website. I uploaded it under GODL-India license bcoz just like many others I also thought that the work by Parliament of India is under GODL. After I got the correct info and it was deleted for copyvio, I successfully nominated so many files for speedy deletion that had same mistake. Also that was the last violation and I can assure you that there will be no violations in future from my side. ShaanSenguptaTalk 22:40, 24 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Although I've been a registered user since 2017 and still have less than 500 posts written. Unfortunately, work and life keep me from contributing more often. I discovered the new override rule while trying to fix the path error in File:Apple logo hollow.svg. It wouldn't be a big deal to just make a request, but my ongoing project is to clean up and update (when necessary) the widely used sports pictograms, where uploading a new file version would require replacing an endless list of use cases manually. My changes to these files mainly consist of cleaning up paths, slightly changing poses and sports equipment to harmonize the overall design language (i.e.: File:Tennis pictogram.svg, File:Baseball pictogram.svg). Professional respect dictates trying to retain the original design as much as possible, but I also make more fundamental changes to enhance legibility or replace obviously clumsy design (i.e.: File:Gliding pictogram.svg, File:Bokator pictogram.svg). I have been a member of Wikimedia Commons since November 28, 2018, but I became truly active only in the summer of 2021, taking my own photographs and uploading images from free sites. I also replaced low-resolution files with higher resolution ones until the end of October, which corresponds to the interest of the community. In this regard, I am applying for the status of a self-patrolled participant. Thank you. MasterRus21thCentury (talk) 16:22, 7 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@MasterRus21thCentury, why did you get blocked on ruwiki? Kadı Message 16:40, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Kadı This is due to the fact that the quality of translations of articles left much to be desired and the Russian section of Wikipedia sought to grow much more actively (there are about 300 million native Russian speakers in the world). Moreover, until the moment of blocking on Wikipedia, I knew very little about the Foundation’s subsidiary projects.
As a result, I am actively developing Russian topics in Wikidata (the Russia wiki project was also founded) - this is the creation of new properties for various sites in the form of encyclopedias, reference books, etc. I do not lose hope of recovering, given that my range of areas on Wikipedia is extremely diverse - from journalism to history, etc. Moreover, in the spring of this year the application for unlocking was rejected.
On Wikimedia Commons, I have plans to replace photographs with high resolution ones (this applies to Russian government websites, including the website of the President of Russia kremlin.ru, which has subdomains putin.kremlin.ru and 20.kremlin.ru with high-resolution photographs). This is also a check for edits by anonymous participants, if any. MasterRus21thCentury (talk) 17:02, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
From your talk page this month, there seem to be concerns about the quality of your uploads and lack of basic information on some of your uploads. Also as Rtfroot noted, AI upscales are not allowed on overwrites, in such cases, uploading as a new file is required. Abzeronow (talk) 20:22, 29 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Abzeronow But what if this file is the same in a higher resolution? And as far as I understand, the trust of the community is in doubt, so that I would be assigned the auto patrol flag? MasterRus21thCentury (talk) 18:09, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Mostly upload newer versions of existing SVG files for translation purposes. There's Translation possible - SVG (switch) with more +2000 SVG files but thats a small portion of the whole SVG Category (like 23.331 or so), my goal here is to get more SVG non-switch files (multilang. support) to language switchable SVGs as possible. I mostly upload for projects I'm working on at Wikisource. Autopatrol would let me overwrite existing files in cases where existing Wikisource djvu/pdf files need to be fixed (for example, File:All the Year Round - Series 2 - Volume 8.pdf, which has a number of duplicate pages, other pages missing, etc.). My other main contribution to Commons has been updating the File:World copyright terms.svg maps for the past couple of years, which might also be impacted by the new autopatrol requirement to overwrite existing files! Now that I have access to a track maker, I would like to be able to upload new versions of tropical cyclone track maps as either a new advisory comes out or the best track is released which requires overwriting the existing image to do so. These maps require overwriting as new information becomes available which would make it difficult for me to do anything other than overwrite my own files with new versions. I realize that there are certain cases where overwriting wouldnt be acceptable such as replacing a track map with the old colors with a version that has the new ones. Recently I've just been attempting to resize to selection large files (specific Inkscape command, it shrinks the transparent canvas so an image doesn't have a ton of dead transparent space, cf this file history), harmonizing color schemes of flags (i;e the Soviet flags), and reverting and reporting vandalism issues (reports are on the Wikipedia Discord). While I still do vehemently disagree with the change in rules I would like to ask for autopatrol rights to continue to do the minor tweaks and fixes I've been doing for the past few months. I do recognize that there were multiple copyright violations listed on me but those were a result of uploading on a friend's behalf (actual warnings by Yann) and then resizing some of his files after he ended up uploading them themselves (error on HapHaxion's fault that caused me to accidentally get flagged). Since I've been kind of completely wiped as a result of that rule change and other stuff going on in my life I've been taking time recently to getting an actual proper understanding of COM:L and COM:TOO with the help of Mdaniels5757 and I'd like to be able to continue contributing the way I have for the past few months. Thank you. NorthTension (talk) 02:08, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I could grant the flag to you on a probationary basis for 3 months. Abzeronow (talk) 17:32, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
My main concern right now is potentially getting actioned for any type of copyright violation after I fix a file. I'm not sure of the best way to word it but I don't really understand why I can get actioned for resizing a file that's a potential copyright violation when I myself did not upload the file or set it's license; I cannot check every single file, I literally trawl the latest SVGs on Wikimedia and pick out ones that got uploaded that I can fix.
According to one of Yann's messages on my talk page I'm on my last warning and I have absolutely no desire to get blocked from editing because I shrunk an image by a couple puxels. Is there a way I can either appeal or get that off my account so I don't have to worry about this? NorthTension (talk) 00:39, 1 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Yann: Abzeronow (talk) 17:12, 1 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The warning is for previous issues. If there isn't any more issue, the warning is not valid any more.
As for a specific example, why did you upload File:Logo of the PIT.svg from [1] where there is no indication of a free license at the source? Yann (talk) 17:28, 1 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Because I uploaded it on behalf of Farukh Umar who vectorized it, it got deleted on his end too and this was already dealt with months ago. NorthTension (talk) 17:35, 1 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Since it doesn't seem like there's an outstanding issue anymore then sure I'll take it. Just to make absolutely sure since I haven't seen anything saying otherwise, harmonizing color schemes or updating them is covered as fine under COM:OVERWRITE, right? There's the "minor and uncontroversial color correction" mentioned but I don't know how much of that covers SVG files, @Abzeronow. NorthTension (talk) 03:49, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As long as the color changes are minor, yes, harmonizing is allowed. I should note that changing from sepia to black and white or vice versa is not a minor color change. ✓ Done, I have granted you autopatrol for 3 months on a probationary basis. I need to update (overwrite) all road sign images in China that do not comply with the current standards after the new national standards are released.
@SteveLLL: If the new design is substantially different, you'd need to upload them as new files per Commons:Overwriting existing files. The Squirrel Conspiracy (talk) 08:48, 1 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The difference in the new standard is not significant, mainly due to the use of new fonts. On the other hand, these files are named in a specific format for template calls, and there is reason to think that these files need to be updated. Some of the existing documents comply with current standards, some use old standards, and some do not comply with any standards due to user deviations. There are so many of them (1k+) that it would be impractical to rename and change the template for every file that doesn't meet the standards. SteveLLL (talk) 16:40, 4 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Old signs that have been used should be renamed if necessary, as the existing naming convention does not contain any time information.—— SteveLLL (talk) 07:48, 26 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For national , provincial , county and township highways that only contain numbers and will only change according to sign standards, I will rename the file and change the template that calls it after the upload is completed. But for expressway signs that contain textual additional information and may change over time, I would replace the file to keep it current, since the newest sign cannot be determined by a priori naming rules. SteveLLL (talk) 08:15, 27 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It is clearly stated in the description of w:zh:Template:China_Expwy_Name page that the producer needs to produce the sign image according to the GB5768.2 standard. I think replacing images that don't meet the standards is the way to go. SteveLLL (talk) 11:59, 27 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@The Squirrel Conspiracy: response? Abzeronow (talk) 21:04, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I forgot this is one I was involved in. If the templates are calling for a specific name, then the files need to use that name. I'm working alongside some heraldic artists (like Fenn-O-maniC) on improving Finnish municipal coats of arms vectors that were drawn in the program of the Finnish Wikiproject Heraldry. I feel that some of the current vectors are not up to a certain standard – eg. the shading of metal is done with two copies of the main figure, colored black and white, and offset a few pixels—instead of having shaded outlines that resemble an emboss, or they have issues with the shield shape like the coat of arms of Kemiö – so my aim is to redraw them as faithfully to the original grant while maintaining symmetry and heraldic rules. As an example, I would like to replace the previously mentioned coat of arms with these vectors. The original to compare with. I primarily upload public domain historic images from Australian archives. I find myself uploading a lot of duplicate images, where I've been able to source higher-quality images than those previously uploaded from the same source. See Category:Hugh Browne for instance. I'm not active in photo editing/restoration at this stage and when cropping images I try to avoid overwriting unless the crop is minimal and is to remove obvious blank/dead space, as is hopefully evident from my recent edit history. I quite regularly fix and correct falsely written/exported SVGs whenever I stumble upon them, check them against the W3C-validator, correct accordingly and expand the file's description en passant, check license-status et cetera. I also often (re-)create necessary SVGs/Vector images from scratch (e.g. if only bitmap-versions are available). My speciality are vectors and fonts, logos.
I always was able to replace corrupted/mis-rendered files before without issues. Please have a look at my contributions page as well as my own created and uploaded files - I'm a well experienced vector editor (at source-level) since years.
Also, if that's any indication of trustworthiness or reliability, I have article-reviewing rights since years in the German Wikipedia (automatically granted through eligibility, not requested), and I often use it to review useful changes or discard errors, vandalism. Hello, we are a non-profit organization which organizes concerts of Lieder and an international Lied course in Barcelona. For the first time, this year, we asked our students to agree to upload the recording of their last day concert to commons to contribute to the free knowledge of Lieder. We want to upload, now, these mp3 files which are pieces of music in the public domain only. Thus we would need to get the autopatrol rights. Although we will be uploading these files from our corporate user, the person behind it is an experienced wikimedian since 2010: Robertgarrigos Thank you. Associació Franz Schubert (talk) 17:37, 29 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I see that my personal account (User:Robertgarrigos) has been granted with the autopatrol rights, which is fine for me, but could we have those right for the corporate account User:Associació_Franz_Schubert which will be the one I will be using to do the uploads? Hello. Please confirm both accounts are associated and provide some proof that you are linked with the Association. Many thanks. Bedivere (talk) 17:53, 29 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, @Bedivere, thanks for the prompt reply. I edited the Associació Franz Schubert user page with a disclaimer. Is that enough proof? Thanks. Associació Franz Schubert (talk) 18:14, 29 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Associació Franz Schubert: This is just a mere claim. Can you login from @Robertgarrigos and add a confirmation here? ─ Aafī (talk) 18:19, 29 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, just done it. Associació Franz Schubert (talk) 18:20, 29 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That would prove only one part of the question that this serves as an alt account and who's behind that account. @Bedivere's other question "some proof that you are linked with the Association" remains unanswered. ─ Aafī (talk) 18:20, 29 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
A statement like "I also help the Associació Franz Schubert to upload their mp3 files" is never sufficient. It doesn't prove that who is behind the account. I seek a more explicit statement. ─ Aafī (talk) 18:22, 29 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not part of their staff, just an associate helping them, I have not any kind of corporate card or contract. As I said, you can contact them directly, or please let me know what kind of more explicit statement you need. I will do my best to provide it. Thanks. Associació Franz Schubert (talk) 18:34, 29 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I could accept your request if: 1) you provide evidence @Robertgarrigos is your account, by editing from that account confirming this request is actually yours; and 2) you provide evidence that you represent or have been allowed by the Association to upload and license your material under a free license. If you can demonstrate that, I have no problem whatsoever to accept your request. Bedivere (talk) 23:57, 29 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I upload astronomy diagrams and telescope images here. I occasionally overwrite astronomy size comparison graphics like File:Quaoar, Earth & Moon size comparison.png to update sizes of objects depicted in them (Quaoar for this example here). In this sort of case, I believe an overwrite is preferred over creating a new file for the following reasons: this size comparison graphic style is widely used for different other objects as you see in Category:Earth size comparisons using The Blue Marble, and that size estimates can change frequently as new studies come out, which would be a hassle to deal with if I had to upload new files separately instead of overwriting the same file.
Beyond size comparison graphics, I also overwrite low-resolution spacecraft/telescope images just to fix their resolution or cropping. For example, this image of Calypso (File:PIA12598.jpg) was originally uploaded as a low-resolution thumbnail, but I've replaced it with a higher-resolution version from the same source claimed in the file. Furthermore, there are plenty of old (uploaded pre-2010) images that were user-cropped but are not centered correctly; for example File:Closest View of Helene.jpg, which I would like to recrop because it is currently shifted a tad too high up. I've been helping out on the fantastic work started by mmrw on the IEC 60417 and ISO 7000 symbol table drafts which are still missing some symbols, looking forward to eventually getting it published on wikipedia proper, and would like to tweak the svg of some contributions to clean them up and make them more consistent across the board: remove inkscape fluff, fix the document size to match the ISO png's (200px*200px, which is used already in the majority of the svg symbols already done), and fix the occasional lineup mismatch with the original ISO symbols. I'm not often very active but I've been editing and overwriting responsibly for the last 14 years until that permission got removed. Abzeronow On February 3, 2024, after three months of discussion, I received the Wikimedia Commons autopatrolled flag for a three-month trial period. Tomorrow this period ends and in this regard I ask you to consider the issue of issuing the flag on a permanent basis. I would like to be able upload slightly improved versions (e.g. grayscale images with no color information or replace distorted versions) of existing files. Thank you. –Noha307 (talk) 14:57, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Changes from sepia to grayscale should always be done as a new file. File:North American Mustang IA 3-view line drawing.png probably should have been three different uploads. Abzeronow (talk) 17:44, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I interpreted minor and uncontroversial color correction, noise reduction, perspective correction, etc. on the overwriting guidelines as supporting the replacement in certain limited cases. It was "minor" because 1) the original image would not have had the sepia color, 2) it did not meaningfully alter the information conveyed by the image (e.g. it was already otherwise black and white), and 3) it was performed on images that were not intended as a "master" copy the goal of which was preservation, but instead an excerpt that was intended for illustration. In other words, the purpose of the image was much more about the factual data that it contained, rather than the exact replication of the content. For example, a complete aircraft manual (e.g. CG-4A manual) should not be color corrected, but a single figure (North American Mustang IA 3-view line drawing) extracted from it could. This justification would not apply to most single pages (e.g. Renault manual cover) as well.
As to why I elected not to uploaded a separate file in, for instance, the case of the Mustang IA manual, it would result in unnecessary "clutter" on Wikimedia Commons and create additional complexity due to the need to link multiple files to each other while also differentiating between them with qualifiers in the file name. Each step in the editing process was included because, while there was not sufficient difference to justify separate files, the was still a benefit to having older versions of the file available. In the case of many of the aircraft 3-views, I not only edited the images, but also performed the scans that created them myself, so it would have been just as possible to upload only the final result. In any event, if the above is an incorrect reading and does not support the case of overwriting other individual's uploads, it is my understanding that users are granted more leeway (as is evidenced by the respect content creators section of the overwriting guidelines and rationale #1 of the file renaming guidelines) when it comes to the images they create themselves. –Noha307 (talk) 21:25, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I wish to be able to overwrite files. Most of what I, one of the admins of the Kazakh Wikipedia (kkwiki), do upload and plan on uploading to Commons are copyright-free images uploaded from free websites with the right licensing. I have already had a bunch of experience on Commons; e.g. I have already uploaded a whole bunch of free websites, like some Russian and Kazakh government websites and have made and edited a whole bunch of categories. Wish the best for y'all. Malik Nursultan B (talk) 17:49, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Two things stand out from your talk page: a final warning from seven months ago, and recent DRs involving lack of Kazakh FOP. We did actually write to our Parliament on this issue, still haven't got an answer though. A lot of uploads have been made in those 7 months and no similar mistakes yet. Hello, I've been editing Wikipedia and uploading files to Commons for over 9 months at this point, on occasion I've had to replace files that already exist to update them when it would have made just as much sense to update them, but without Autopatrol rights I've been forced to create new ones with new names. I've read Commons:Overwriting existing files, and I understand that Autopatrol rights are required to upload new versions of pre-existing files, so I'd like Autopatrol rights to be able to do so, meaning there's less likelihood that different languages of the same article end up using different files with different maintainers (and one of which tends to be out of date or even abandoned). Hi, I am applying for the autopatrol rights to update and/or improve the existing files. Before the AbuseFilter was updated, I often update the files such as maps to according to Commons:Overwriting_existing_files#Files_with_current_data and minor improvements, as in File:Visa policy of Jamaica.svg, File:Misiones Diplomaticas de Taiwan.PNG, File:Visa_requirements_for_Taiwanese_citizens.png, File:World map of share of people who received all doses prescribed by the initial COVID-19 vaccination protocol.png, File:TW PHW68a.svg, and File:Visa policy of Jamaica.png. I am a sysop on Chinese Wikipedia and Chinese Wikinews, and have 95,042 total edit globally, including 78,360 edits on Chinese Wikipedia and 7,825 edits on Wikimedia Commons. I would like improve a file that was not initially uploaded by me (cf file:Ensembles.svg, to cropp) like I already did it in the past (cf File:Perspective pseudo isometrique jeux video.svg). But I am not allowed to do that anymore (message : You currently do not have sufficient permissions to do this.) I tought that I was already autopatrolled Merci Thank you. I also tried to upload them to files with new version names, but this causes large administrative work since the new file needs to be linked in may places, see File:MySQL.pdf for a example that I could overwrite without needing special rights since I was the original upload and see File:Human Physiology LaTeX Version.pdf and File:Human Physiology.pdf for a file where I had to upload under a new name because I lack the rights at the moment Thank you. I would like to have the autopatrolled rights to overwrite old files (mostly old artworks and photos) with a higher quality, as open digitization projects, such as BHL, Internet Archive, and Gallica, have made their better versions accessible. I edited and uploaded as User:The- from 2013 (2005 on Wikipedia) to 2020, when I lost my account login and was unable to recover it, so had to make a new account. This means that I am now unable to upload new versions of images that I uploaded under my old account without going through the "request an exception" page. I am planning to make a series of edits to dozens of images that I uploaded with my old account (election maps) and it would be extremely laborious to go through the "request an exception" page for every single one of these images, and every time I want to make a change to an image I uploaded with my old account in future. I asked at the help desk whether I could have permission to overwrite images uploaded by my old account, and I was the only way this could be done would be to grant me Autopatrol rights, so I am requesting that here.
I have been cautioned for an edit war on Wikimedia Commons once, over two years ago, but I learnt from the experience. My motivation for requesting Autopatrol rights is simply to be able to update images that I personally uploaded under my old account. Offa29 (talk) 12:04, 8 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I asked for advice at WikiProject Maps on how to approach a map improvement project, and it was suggested that I request permission to overwrite files here. I don’t have nearly 500 edits on Commons, but I do have a 20-year history of 8,000 constructive edits on the English Wikipedia. I want to improve the maps of UN Security Council membership (one per year) in several ways: a) easily modifiable CSS styling instead of colouring dispersed throughout the files, b) consistent treatment of disputed territories in line with UN practice, c) consistent graphical details such as colours, borders and nominal size. For more details see my original request for advice. For work I’ve been doing recently to improve coverage of the United Nations, see this infobox template and this module I created (with documentation). (The template uses the maps I want to improve.) Hi there everyone. Since the beginning of 2023 I have been uploading, classifying and bettering historical photographs (I'm particularly bot-like in appending the (taken in/on) on as many photos with known date as possible. XD). I thought that it would be of some help to some admin to not have to control any mine little edit here and there... and there is also the annoying thing that now we autoconfirmed cannot directly overwrite files even with only pure higher resolution ones (just had to ask a new request for a file and it reminded me of asking here directly for patrol rights). Thank you. LucaLindholm (talk) 05:27, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Many images were uploaded long ago from highly compressed copies, which are now available in significantly higher quality. Additionally, many images that were previously captured as low-resolution screenshots from digital libraries can now be uploaded in full resolution. I'd like to get autopatrol status so that I can fix straightforwardly bad SVG files without having to go through the file overwriting request system. Lately, I've started working through the categories of bad/fake SVG files to fix the pride flags that have these issues. Yesterday, I fixed File:MLM flag.svg and File:Mad Pride flag.svg: both of these had been wrappers of raster graphics. There are dozens more like them (e.g. all of Category:Proposed aboriginal flags of Australia), and I think it would be easier and faster for if I could overwrite clearly bad SVGs without having to wait on permission via the request system. I've been a regular contributor since June, have made over a thousand edits, and have grown quite familiar with SVG as a file format. Thank you :) Intervex (talk) 22:22, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Much of my work here over the years has involved overwriting existing files to make minor improvements in line with the COM:OVERWRITE guideline. Obviously there were issues with overwriting abuse involving other users and the policy was changed last year so that only users with autopatrol rights were allowed to do this. As I had done this several times over the years without issue, I ask that I be given this permission. Thank you. LM2000 (talk) 11:12, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sometimes I browse the maintenance category de:Kategorie:Datei:Datei-Wartung on the German Wikipedia for commons-compatible images. It is often the case that the same image already exists on Commons under the same or similar name, but the image resolution is better on deWP. It would make it easier for me to simply overwrite an existing file with the better version instead of unnecessarily moving the same image to Commons again. Hi! I've found and read the backbone rule of the Wikimedia Commons Commons:Upload/Unknown author or license . So that if I don't know the author and can't tell for sure whether the artistic work is in public domain, I shouldn't upload it to Wikimedia Commons. You can grant me a tempo right as a trial. David Osipov (talk) 07:48, 18 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Actually I don't need it to continue to photomap as an OSM mapper. There was a copyvio earlier this year. And folksongs and stories have to be in the public domain as far as your recordings (folksongs definitely being a tricky area as User:Jmabel said recently.) Have you already researched the copyright status of the works you recorded? Abzeronow (talk) 17:19, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I have. Ekpeye folksongs and folk stories have been passed on for ages as oral tradition from parent to child. There are restrictions regarding the recordings which we (community) did. UMASOYE (talk) 17:39, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
FWIW, I can confirm that Umasoyee is being filtered from uploading MP3s: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:AbuseLog&wpSearchUser=Umasoyee.
I only see one upload of theirs that was ever deleted specifically as a copyvio: File:Ada Omo Daddy.jpg was deleted as a promo poster. Also, File:Etá (Ekpeye wrestling).webm was deleted for lack of license, no idea what the story was on that. Their only other deletion, File:Black Hunter.jpg, was a scope issue (an AI image), and they were quite gracious about it when someone said it was out of scope. That's out of 100+ uploads, the rest of which look good offhand.
@Umasoyee: can you explain a little better about the copyright status on the material you want to upload? I presume that the material is old enough to not have copyright issues, but could you confirm that? Are you the videographer? Have the performers signed some sort of release covering their copyrights (because it seems to me that otherwise you can't offer a license for their work)? What license do you intend to offer? I know this may seem like a bit of an interrogation, but the couple of things that got deleted don't fill me with confidence that you fully get the complexity of licensing materials other than simple photographs. I'd like to grant the relevant rights, but there is a very good reason we don't usually let less experienced users upload MP3s, because so many get it wrong.
Please ping me if replying, I don't usually track this page but Abzeronow pulled me into the discussion. - Jmabel ! talk 20:52, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @Jmabel: thank you for looking into this.
Concerning my recent upload Etá (Ekpeye Wrestling) that was flagged for lack of license it was due to a technical error on my part, I uploaded that last video via video2commons and had not updated all the fields before hitting publish. When I logged in to commons to update the missing fields. I saw the video had already been flagged for deletion despite making the update.
I have now re-uploaded the video with the license. The case of the poster was a mistake on my part (didn’t have adequate knowledge then) same for the AI image (actually generated by me), it was supposed to be a temporary image to be deleted immediately as I was facilitating a wikicommons training and needed to demonstrate how uploads are done, my bad.
Regarding the MP3 materials which I plan on uploading they are indeed old enough to be in the public domain amd free to use. I am the recorder of the folkstories and songs which I intend to upload. I have the consent of the storytellers to share their work under the creative commons license.
I intend to upload the files under the CC BY SA 4.0 license with the following attribution, “this audio features storytelling by…..”
I hope this answers your question. Thank you for your attention to this matter. UMASOYE (talk) 21:59, 20 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Umasoyee: Are you saying you uploaded the same file instead of filing an undeletion request? - Jmabel ! talk 02:53, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel if you’re referring to the ‘eta’ file yes. I didn’t know how to file the undeletion. UMASOYE (talk) 07:14, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    @Umasoyee: Commons:Undeletion requests.
Umasoyee, I don't want to impede you doing what sound like potentially valuable uploads, but I'm sure you can see from the above why I hesitate to assume you completely know the ins and outs of what you are doing. The reason we don't let new users upload MP3s is because when we didn't have a rule like that, a high percentage of MP3s new users uploaded had problems, often ones that meant we could not keep the files. So I'm going to make a suggestion (Pinging @Abzeronow to make sure this also makes sense to him). We grant the right to Umasoyee, but with a specific understanding that Umasoyee will upload three MP3 files, and then contact Abzeronow and myself (Jmabel) to review those before uploading any more, so that if something here does not look right to either of us, we have a chance to head off any big problem, and we have an early chance to show Umasoyee anything that needs to be done differently. Would everyone agree to that? - Jmabel ! talk 07:27, 24 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Unless I'm misinterpreting something, the copyvios I uploaded to Commons were at the very beginning of my time editing on Wikipedia (almost three years ago) and at a time I didn't fully understand copyright issues that affect the site. Y2hyaXM (talk) 13:08, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The most recent copyvios were deleted less than a year ago. Would you mind telling me what has changed since then? Iwaqarhashmi (talk) 13:39, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The audio files that were deleted in December 2023 were clips from congressional hearings uploaded on C-SPAN. I saw similar clips being used on the pages of some U.S. representatives and figured these kinds of clips were in the public domain. They were not. Older than that were some images I uploaded of Joe Vogel, a Maryland state delegate who personally emailed me the images for use on Wikipedia, but were deleted by a VRT editor because they deemed that the images didn't have sufficient permissions. Y2hyaXM (talk) 14:02, 26 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Since these file deletions, I've generally avoided asking state legislators for images to use on Wikipedia and have made sure that the audio clips I upload to Wikimedia are in the public domain, whether those clips be from videos uploaded by U.S. representatives onto their social media platforms (PD-USCongress) or from within the U.S. House chamber itself.
