The Ramachandran plot (first developed by G.N. Ramachandran in 1963) is a 2-dimensional plot of the dihedral angles phi and psi, which together almost completely describe protein backbone structure in 3 dimensions. Phi is the dihedral angle C-N-Calpha-C, and phi is the dihedral angle N-Calpha-C-N; the third dihedral is omega (Calpha-C-N-Calpha) across the peptide plane, which is not as influential because it stays very nearly planar.
Ramachandran plots may either show theoretical allowed values, or datapoints for the phi,psi values of a particular set of examples, or both together.
