Pentarchy was a model of Church organisation formulated in the laws of Emperor Justinian I of the Roman Empire. By the 5th century, five patriarchates had been confirmed by the fourth Ecumenical Council - the Council of Chalcedon.
Today, due to internecine struggles in the Christian Church, there are many claimants to the title of Patriarch of Constantinople.
