References in COM:TOO

In COM:TOO I get in the moment more than 30 errors from references. I did a quick look and it seems to me that the transclusion from subpages is not always done correctly, e.g. <ref name="some-individual-string" /> is transcluded, but the actual reference with name="some-individual-string" is not. Could someone with more clues look at this? — Speravir – 19:35, 28 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Speravir: Yes. There are several references that have been transcluded. I will review them in detail and fix them. Thanks. Leitoxx Work • Talk • Mail 09:19, 16 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Leitoxx and 4nn1l2: There are still many reference errors, I think this is not resolved. --Ameisenigel (talk) 15:42, 6 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Ameisenigel: Unfortunately there isn't a great way to fix this problem in general. It's not really a translation-related problem, it's a problem with section transclusion and named references in general, so fixing it is really outside the scope of this fairly low-traffic noticeboard. If a named reference is used in a transcluded and non-transcluded section, it can be defined in the transcluded section and re-used elsewhere. If the ref is used in two different transcluded sections, it will have to be defined twice. Reference names in transcluded sections must be unique both on the source page and every page where the section is transcluded. Transclusion with #section-h doesn't work with includeonly/noinclude, so we can't use that. AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 16:48, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Translation from ancient Greek

Is there anybody who can translate this phrase from a print by William Hogarth: "χρονοσ γαρ ου τεχτου σοφοσ, Απαντα δ'εργαζομενοσ αδενεζερα"? --Jonund (talk) 09:25, 1 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi all. There is proposal for migration of Template:Translated tag to the Translate Extension. See Template talk:Translated tag.
This may be useful pattern for the further similar tasks. --Kaganer (talk) 19:57, 3 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

General help - Translation

Hello! I'm an admin from SqWiki. Can someone help me with translation in regard to this project we've set up? I've set up the translation tags but I've never worked with translations before so I don't know if I've done it correctly. Any kind of help would be appreciated. :) - Klein Muçi (talk) 00:09, 7 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Klein Muçi, oh, the pages are in Albanian. Since translation only works from one source language, I would suggest rewriting the project page in English and then it would be possible to add /sq subpages and translate into other languages as well. Ата (talk) 18:32, 8 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, there is another way. Here we just need to change the "Page content language" from English to Albanian. An example can be seen here. আফতাবুজ্জামান (talk) 19:57, 8 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Elcobbola, Kaganer, VIGNERON, could one of you check Commons:Gara e fotografisë së ushqimit tradicional shqiptar - 2022 and mark it for translation? Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 21:15, 8 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
(Edit conflict) Unless Ата's already solved the problem. ;-) Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 21:17, 8 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Klein Muçi techically, source page may be in any language (see above). But i'm strongly DON't recommends this way for Your case. Other translators may be dificultly taranslate from Albanian. My advise:
  1. rename these pages into */sq (for keeping current content):
  2. Create in the initial pages these same content, but in English version
  3. Marking these pages for translate (i'm will help)
  4. Import albanian content into new scheme (i'm will help)
--Kaganer (talk) 21:36, 8 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Whatamidoing (WMF), thank you for your help! :))
@Ата, @Kaganer, thank you also! Is there an absolute necessity to have the "source text" in English for this to work? If it can be done to work with the current Albanian text in its current form, I'd appreciate it. I can write the English version after this is set up. If it would require substantial changes, then we can leave it without translations this time given that the event is in regard to Albanian foods and its target audience is generally Albanians. But even if that was the case, I'd appreciate knowing the exact steps needed to make something like that possible for future cases. - Klein Muçi (talk) 00:19, 9 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Nope:) Sourse pages may be in any language, absolutely. Just you should be set correct language for these pages through Special:PageLanguage (before marking to translations).
I write exclusively about convenience for translators. During the translation process, you cannot arbitrarily select the source language. And everyone will have to translate from Albanian. And there are far fewer such people than those who know English. In addition, the Google translator works better in language pairs with English. --Kaganer (talk) 00:36, 9 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
For your purposes, you may just create /en subpages (as ordinary wikitext) for each your project pages, and then link them through custom navbar. --Kaganer (talk) 00:43, 9 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Kaganer, ooh, you can't select what source language you use for translation... Now I understand why it is important for it to be in English. Well can we go on while keeping the source as Albanian in this case and then for future cases switch to English maybe? The reason why I say that is because my community has already started an advertising campaign in social medies with that link and they'd be be "upset" if the same link suddenly showed an English text as default for non-registered users, which is what the campaign will more or less target. - Klein Muçi (talk) 01:44, 9 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yoг may. There will be some difficulties, but I have already handled such situations that we can handle. For the future, for campanies targeting unregistered users, I advise you to use the link with ?uselang=sq, and, in addition, shorten it through Special:UrlShortener. And make whole landing page in the "autotranslate mode" (as {{Translated tag}} depends from user interface language). --Kaganer (talk) 01:55, 9 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Kaganer, oh, so there is a way to fix the language that we want to display. Thank you! I'm very new on this whole translation thing.
Okay then, what will I need to do by my part to continue with the translation task from the current state? Me and some other member from the Albanian community have been playing around with the translations tags throughout the pages, trying to get it to work so they're a bit in a messed up state currently. - Klein Muçi (talk) 02:23, 9 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Klein Muçi, You want starting translation of your project pages, so? --Kaganer (talk) 02:35, 9 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Kaganer, well, yes. The idea was to start having the translation infrastructure (that template with the languages available and all) for the current project pages in their current form, so using Albanian as the source text. What do I need to do exactly? How do I get that template at the top of the pages and the possibility to translate those pages in other languages if I so choose? - Klein Muçi (talk) 03:00, 9 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
For starting translations needed participation of the Translation Admin.
All is done. I'm create one additional page Commons:Gara e fotografisë së ushqimit tradicional shqiptar - 2022/CategoryHeader - your category is not acceptable for translations. This will be shown for users in their interface. language. --Kaganer (talk) 03:09, 9 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Kaganer, ooh, thanks a lot! I'll deal with the English translation soon.
Can you do me one last favor? Given that we've set up all /subpages names in Albanian, can you also Move without leaving an redirect behind Commons:Gara e fotografisë së ushqimit tradicional shqiptar - 2022/CategoryHeader to Commons:Gara e fotografisë së ushqimit tradicional shqiptar - 2022/Kreu i kategorisë just for consistency and standardization reasons?
So: Commons:Gara e fotografisë së ushqimit tradicional shqiptar - 2022/CategoryHeaderCommons:Gara e fotografisë së ushqimit tradicional shqiptar - 2022/Kreu i kategorisë - Klein Muçi (talk) 03:24, 9 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
✓ Done --Kaganer (talk) 03:27, 9 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You may translate every page separately or may use this link to aggregate group, contain all your translate items from all project pages --Kaganer (talk) 03:20, 9 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Kaganer, thank you very much for the provided help! I was starting to lose hope I would ever get this done. Just one more question: When I open the link you just gave me now, it offers me to translate in Albanian, not from Albanian. Logically it should be the other way. Is that normal? I'm just asking out of curiosity because I can easily translate page by page without any problem, no big deal. - Klein Muçi (talk) 03:37, 9 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ops! It seems that aggregated groups only work for English originals. I will investigate this. I'm sorry! --Kaganer (talk) 03:45, 9 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Nikerabbit, it sounds like fixing phab:T301311 and phab:T281073 would help in this situation. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 18:32, 10 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
By way, You plan using Upload Wizard campaign for your contest? I don' see campain tag in your link under upload button. --Kaganer (talk) 03:47, 9 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Kaganer, the initial idea (take a look) was to do that but we didn't know how to do it and we settled for just an upload button. Apparently that's another thing that only admins can do. We'd like to use that if it is possible. - Klein Muçi (talk) 04:02, 9 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Kaganer, can you put for translation also this page so I can translate it's wikilink from Gara e fotografisë së ushqimit tradicional shqiptar - 2022/Juria to
Traditional Albanian food photography competition - 2022/The jury? I've done the same for every other page. Besides we might put more text there as the jury gets elected in the following days. - Klein Muçi (talk) 04:04, 9 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
✓ Done And also i'm moved all project pages into subcategory. By Commons rules, all categories is named in English. Your main category may be temprary kept in Albanian, but will be better also rename this before starting mass uploads. --Kaganer (talk) 04:22, 9 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Kaganer, yeah thanks a lot! You are right on that one. We can move that category now to conserve some energy from everyone when the mass uploads start.
Category:Gara e fotografisë së ushqimit tradicional shqiptar - 2022Category:Traditional Albanian food photography competition - 2022 - Klein Muçi (talk) 04:26, 9 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Finished all the English translations. Please tell me when you move the category so I change the guiding text that says users should use the Albanian one. (I could move it myself but I can't delete the old one while you can move without creating redirects.)
After that's done, if we can also deal with the upload wizard campaign topic it would be good. - Klein Muçi (talk) 04:49, 9 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
✓ Done again. All links to category also updated. --Kaganer (talk) 06:36, 9 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Kaganer, thank you! I changed the text as well. Do we delete the old category?
Now, can you help us configure the UploadWizard? What information do you need in regard to it? You already know the category and the date is from February 7th to February 28 2022. Any other information needed in regard to it? - Klein Muçi (talk) 09:19, 9 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
1. Category marked for deletion
2. About UploadWizard - this is not for me ;) I don't have experience with configuring this tool. --Kaganer (talk) 14:06, 9 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Kaganer, thank you so much for all the help though! :)) Do you know who I can ask about UW? - Klein Muçi (talk) 14:14, 9 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
IMHO, firstly You may ask especial flag - see Commons:Upload Wizard campaign editors
Secondly, you may read content of Commons:Upload campaigns and asking to one from user from this list (with recent activity).
Or ask in technical forum. --Kaganer (talk) 14:34, 9 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Reda Kerbouche may help, in the evening. --Kaganer (talk) 14:42, 9 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
