Hi, your diagram has a few mistakes in it. For once the heading "heteronym" (different name) should be "heterophone" (different sound). Since 'desert' (sandy place) and 'desert' (leave) have the same name but are pronounced differently. Also the way the Venn Diagram is drawn makes it look like the top/middle section 'homonymns' is part of the wrongly-named 'heteronymns' section as well as the 'heterograph' section but while homonyms have the same spelling and the same pronunciation they are neither heterophones (since they do sound the same), nor are they heterographs (since they are written the same) (or 'heteronyms' since that's the opposite of what they are). — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2001:16B8:5025:2800:4DCB:8AE3:F656:65F7 (talk) 19:50, 23 January 2020 (UTC)

While rereading it I noticed that some of the planned dates have slipped. I played with changing a local copy but I wasn't sure how to send the changes back since I know nothing of how this system works. I am hoping you can use a diff:

Updated diagram

Thank you so much for your insightful suggestions and kind words, @Rogerflores92: constructive and specific feedback such as yours inspires me to contribute more diagrams!

I've checked the dates out and modified the diagram accordingly. I've also added FAST and updated ELT's name. I kept "at the same scale" for Arecibo, as I've done for other comparisons, to stress that it is not an optical telescope.

I had to put the MMT dates above as there have been two versions; putting them below dissociates the drawings from their respective dates. Alternatives are

1. Putting the dates for every telescope below its drawing: looks odd to have a date before the name
2. Putting drawings under their labels: to put non-mirrors together and to save space, I wish to put the radio telescopes next to the sports' courts, but starting the diagram with these (at the top) seems odd.

Measurements in inches were added to distinguish different telescopes or lenses at the same observatory, so form part of their names. I think converting them to metric would lose their significance.

I deleted the first line of the SVG file, renamed it as Nucleosynthesis_periodic_table.py and ran it in Python. Both Python 3.8.0 and 2.7.8 generated Nucleosynthesis_periodic_table.svg (the file I uploaded) without error. By the way, what change(s) did you intend to make? The first time I see images such as File:Fourier_series_square_wave_circles_animation.gif, abstract ideas become concrete. I wish I was exposed to such ideas when I was a student, so I try to help the next generation understand concepts better. If you've any other visualisation ideas, I'd sure like to hear about them. The Generation timeline you created and added [1] was very well done! Just two minor corrections:

• Can you change the end point of Generation Z to early 2010s instead of 2012 please?
• And change the end point of Generation Alpha to mid-2020s instead of late 2020s?

Hi — I love your generations chart. Doing an image search, I don't see anything else like it. I humbly offer a few suggestions — can you have the Korean War and Vietnam rather than (or alongside) the Cold War? Those are more associated with generations than the Cold War, which is not known for a generation fighting in it. I think retirement should start at 65, not 60, and is it possible to feather (soften) the ends from 70-90 so it doesn't look like everyone dies when they're 70? :-) Finally, Millennials is misspelled. Perhaps in future versions, the height of each generation bar could correspond to the population, e.g., Boomers bar taller than the "Lucky Few" — even having the height of each bar vary across time, as birth rates go up or down. I tried to make the diagram more international, so picked the ages 60 and 70 as they are multiples of 10, and cover the range from 1962 in [3] (best I could find), and from 1950 for North America and Europe in File:Life_Expectancy_At_Birth_By_Region.png, respectively. Softening it would make it harder to read, in my opinion. The Korean and Vietnam wars were US-centric, but I think are fair additions considering the readership. I like your idea of varying bar height (has to be number born, not current numbers, as the chart will then need to be constantly changed), but don't have the appropriate data. @Cmglee: Loads of countries were involved in the Korean and Vietnam wars to various extent, so mentioning them explicitly is not necessary U.S.-centric. A few more suggestions I have for corrections you could make:

-Change the Gen Alpha start date on your chart from 2012 to 2013, since Gen Z ends in 2012 on the chart.

-On your chart you appear to have the War on Terror starting in 2002; in actuality it started in 2001.

-You have Web 2.0 and the War on Terror bunched together as starting at the same time; however in actuality, Web 2.0 started closer to around 2004 (when the term was coined) or 2005 (when YouTube came out and Broadband overtook dial up).

-In-between the Cold War and Web 2.0, you could add Web 1.0 which spanned from about 1991-2004/2005.

Note that there is an asterisk next to the end point of Generation Z which means that the end point of Generation Z at 2012 is tentative for now. I think there's a bit of a misunderstanding(?). The template says "Update as per CherokeeJack1's feedback", but CherokeeJack1 was asking that the start date of Generation Alpha be changed to 2013, but the template currently states that the start date of Generation Alpha is "early 2010s". Anyway, it's not a big deal. When Pew adds Generation Alpha to their timeline (which might be years from now since the oldest of that generation is around 8 years old now), the template could always be updated later. Question about size-specific SVG programming

I just took notice of all the incredible stuff you do with SVGs, and saw that it's possible to do conditional programming in SVG, and think this might be good for an issue with my tartans. Specifically, once the librsvg generated PNG gets under 25% of the original image size, the mask resolution gets too small to let the lower layer through, and all you get is the weft (horizontal) weave (see the thumbnail on one of my tartan images to see, or generate a PNG rendering at 149px or less). I'm wondering if there would be a way of programming that layer to go to 50% opacity at <25% sizing. If you have any leads for me, I'd be grateful. VanIsaac (en.wiki) 07:26, 23 July 2020 (UTC)

Hi @Vanisaac: Thanks for the compliment. By conditional programming, do you mean make the thumbnail renderer give different output depending on thumbnail size? I've found that thumbnails of some images drastically change at different sizes, such as these:

(if they look the same, try changing the zoom level using Ctrl+- and Ctrl+=), but haven't discovered what causes it and how to control it.

This is a very interesting image and a great way to illustrate the phenomenon. Is it possible to add a version where the luminance has a continuous derivative as a counterexample? 22:06, 22 October 2020 (UTC)

3. In the infobox, "Height 65.5 meters (216 feet)"

Hi! Is there a similar calendar to https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lent_calendar.svg but for the advent sundays? eg with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stir-up_Sunday and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaudete_Sunday etc, That would be really useful! Simplification

Hi Cmglee, I gave your user logo a look.

• You made it 512 × 384 px, viewboxing to 56 × 42. This causes an odd factor of 9.142857... - it is always better to avoid such odd numbers. I tried to redraw it with 56 × 42, which is a bit small and caused decimal fractions - but an exact copy with 512 × 384 px would have caused numerous odd coordinates. I would have chosed e.g. 400 × 300, which gave better measures, without decimal fractions.
• You used cropping (and linecapping). Each one of the incomplete circles will need 20 to 22 bytes, while each one of your use instructions needed 67 bytes - it is much cheaper to draw the six circles one after the other, instead of cloning them. Some of the circles could have been drawn at their position, avoiding to clone them from 0,0.
• The same can be done with the four "spots", so I drew each one directly.
• In my drawing concept, the single path for the circles is drawn with linefeeds, for a better readability; of course it can as well be drawn in one line <path stroke="#000" d="m15,5a7,7 0 1,0 0,9m16,1a7,7 0 1,0-9,0M48,3a7,7 0 1,0 5,7M8,25a7,7 0 1,0 6,13M32,27a7,7 0 1,0 0,9m18-9a7,7 0 1,0 0,9"/> saving a few bytes.
• I rather make descriptions in the file description Infobox, instead of within the SVG code - but this may anybody do as preferred. Some like title and desc.

• Hi, it is a great idea of you to fill an image with a circle instead of with a path. I will use it in future!
• Are you really sure that all your drawings are {{self|cc-by-sa-4.0|GFDL}}? Some are sure ineligible.

@Sarang: Thanks, my pleasure. I just use the default option. Some may indeed consist of just simple shapes but it's hard to know for sure what's eligible for copyright. I'd use Igen if it were simpler to remember; as it is, the codes are a mystery to me. Looking at Template:Image_generation, what options to use doesn't seem at all obvious. Thanks for the feedback. If you take a look at File_talk:Nucleosynthesis_periodic_table.svg, you'll see that there have been many requests for corrections. Considering it has been well-researched and vetted twice by NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day team, I am hesitant to update it unless there is very strong evidence that there is a mistake. Dear CmgLee,

I really love your graphics, and I’d like to ask you about your excellent plot of spacecraft and planets over the last 50 years. This is the first time I’ve sent a message, so I’m not sure if I’m doing it correctly or if I’ve sent it twice, so please bear with me!

I’ve been trying to produce an A1-sized map of the largest 150 solar system bodies and spacecraft out to about 150AU, where Voyager 1 currently is. It’ll be a plan view looking down from the ecliptic north pole, with distances on a quasi-logarithmic scale, using data from JPL’s Horizons ephemerides. I’d like to plot most planets’ and spacecrafts’ positions over a period of time – about 100 years for the most distant planets beyond Pluto, and over the period of one orbit for closer planets.

I’ve attached a rough sketch which I created in Microsoft Word, mainly because I don’t know how to use any other programmes, though I can use basic Photoshop and have a very basic understanding of HTML, but I don’t (yet) know anything about SVG or scripts. I’ve only plotted the approximate locations over time of the inner planets from Mercury to Saturn, but I did so using Word text boxes following a circular path. This makes it difficult to plot locations in exactly the right spot on the background circular graph paper.

Ok I tried to upload a screenshot, but I keep getting an error message saying “We could not determine whether this file is suitable” — how would I get round that? Meanwhile I’ve uploaded my screenshot to: https://ibb.co/yQvfhMT

So how did you create your graphic? I’m hoping there’s some magic programme where you just select a planet and the date range, then it automatically plots the circle, but I’ve just read your comment saying that you wrote a Python script, whatever that is.

Could you please let me know how you did it, what software is required, any good resources for teaching myself how to write the script, and any other tips? So far I’ve started compiling the distances and heliocentric longitudes into an Excel table; I’m not that interested in latitudes as I’m only creating a 2D plan, although I’ll probably add some symbols to indicate whether a planet is above or below the ecliptic. The only other complication is that my planned distance scale will be uneven – very roughly 1AU per square on the graph paper for the inner planets, 5AU per square for the outer planets, then 10AU per square for objects beyond Neptune.

Hi @HalcyonGeezer: Thanks for your message and compliment. Nice idea to create a plot for 100 years, though beware that the inner planets will likely be simply solid circles along their orbits; even Jupiter will have gone round around 8.4 times. I expect a diagram with 150 bodies will appear very cluttered, considering mine with 7, plus 5 probes is already rather so. You could omit the year markers, though you would lose context on their relative positions with time.

Without a full-fledged programming language, the best option I can think of is to use scatter plots in Excel or similar.

Both Word and Photoshop formats are unsupported on Wikimedia as they are proprietary, which I think technically requires licences to write readers for. You can upload PDFs instead.

If you haven't seen it, Solar System Live has several views you can adapt for your purpose. Unfortunately its resolution is pretty low by today's standards.

Hope that's enough to start with. I'd love to see what you come up with.

But my lack of command in coding and SVG files prevents me from doing it. If you can collaborate with me, I want to translate this file into Turkish. If it's an easy job for you, I provided you the Turkish translations of the words and some minor corrections.
