*{{re|Ashe Smith}} Signing your posts on talk pages is required by [[Commons:Signatures]] policy. To do so, simply add four {{w|tilde|tildes}} (<nowiki>~~~~</nowiki>) at the end of your comments. Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and a {{w|timestamp}} will then automatically be added when you save your comment. Signing your comments helps people to find out who said something and provides them with a link to your user/talk page (for further discussion).

:: {{ping|LizHaywood}}Assuming you ''are'' the creator of both the murals and the photographs of them, they will be restored once the OTRS process is complete, so OTRS is the one further step needed here. An alternative would be if you have a website as an artist that is clearly under your control, you can indicate '''there''' that this account is yours and acts on your behalf, thus bypassing OTRS (which is limited to only a few trusted individuals ans is backlogged by several weeks). If you go that latter route, get here of me either here or on my talk page, and I can work through the undeletion.

hi for a new article i would like to use two pictures, both from unknown photografers working when the pictures was taken at a newspaper that does not exist anymore. May i use the pics? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nattregn (talk • contribs) 20:04, 19 March 2019‎ (UTC)[reply]

Very unlikely. I can't see how you would get permission from an unknown photographer, and if the newspaper is defunct it's going to be very hard to track on who might have inherited its rights to get that permission.

Lucy Hicks Anderson

Can I upload the only photo of Lucy Hicks Anderson to be found on the internet, that was taken while she was still alive, considering she is already dead more then 70 years and died in California (I believe 70 years is the limit for the right to publicity of celebrities there)? I don't know. it looks like a really old photo and every blog or black history month post didn't say anything about the photo itself. but it seems to be the only photo available ever of Lucy. I wanted to translate the page, I am not American, that is why I try to find a free to use photo Carpatianlynx (talk) 16:16, 20 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

For starters, could you give an example of where you perceive to have been intentionally hindered? Furthermore: technically you did not post this demand on Wikipedia but on Wikimedia, which is (although related) a different project, where your one and only contribution so far was this demand - which (to me) seems like a wrong foot to start things off. I have a set of 4 photographs taken in Australia 1959 by Fritz Kos an Australien photographer that I want to upload for use in a Wikipedia article. The photographs were commissioned by our family and show the house that our family built in Perth. According to information that I received the copyright rules during that time in Australia give the copyright to the person that commissioned the work. I do want to credit the uploaded pictures to the photographer. Which procedure do I use? Own work? But there is no field to mention the author. Just to be safe I notified the heirs of Fritz Kos that I planned to publish the photographs under the CC-BY-SA-4.0 license and received an OK. Based on the copyright situation above I already gave permission to publish one of the photographs in a book and this was accepted valid I understand. I also assume that our family are the only owners of the original photographs. There is of cause no documentation that proves that our family commissioned the work except the photographs themselves. Basicly what is the procedure to use if author and copyright owner are different but the author should be credited in the published work. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Schmila (talk • contribs) 15:18, 24 March 2019 (UTC) --Schmila (talk) 14:52, 24 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Tisopurine

What should be the name of the file File:Tisopurine.png which was uploaded by @Edgar181: . The user @JWBE: has been trying it to rename to Thioisopurine. Is it proper scientific name or vandalism? --✝iѵɛɳ२२४०†ลℓк †๏ мэ 16:17, 24 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I am chemist, so I know what I do. Indeed, Tiven2240, this question should be delegated to a chemist. --JWBE (talk) 16:28, 24 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
JWBE, what is Thioisopurine? Can you provide a link to a scholarly work (journal) where this was properly described? Regards. T Cells (talk · contribs · email) 17:04, 24 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The given rationale for the name change, "meaningless or ambiguous name", is patently false. Tisopurine is the w:en:International Nonproprietary Name given to the chemical chemical compound for the specific purpose of being non-ambiguous. I can't find any evidence that "thioisopurine" is used by any reliable source as a synonym for this chemical compound. ChemNerd (talk) 17:44, 24 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
There are two citations in the enWP article where the file is used; one calls the compound thiopurine and the other tisopurine. According to the infobox, the IUPAC name is 1,2-Dihydro-4H-pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidine-4-thione; no “thioisopurine” synonym to be found in any of the chemical databases linked from there. (IMO the element symbols are oversized in the drawing, but that’s not pertinent to the name.)—Odysseus1479 (talk) 18:58, 24 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Tisopurine is a unprecise trivial-name. It could have been shortened form Thioisopurine. In fact it is a "Iso"purine, due to the new position of one N-Atom. Thiopurinol is even unprecise, because it's not an alcohol. Only the IUPAC-name is in the moment precise. --JWBE (talk) 20:56, 24 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

There used to be a handy little tool on commons that you could use to generate figures regarding the global usage of files and categories. The "unsafe" site does not appear to exist anymore, so I'm wondering if the code can be changed in any way, in order for it to be deemed safe enough to upload. • @20Panorama15: Signing your posts on talk pages is required by Commons:Signatures policy. To do so, simply add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comments. Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and a timestamp will then automatically be added when you save your comment. Signing your comments helps people to find out who said something and provides them with a link to your user/talk page (for further discussion).
Yes, you can make that change in a text editor, but please indicate what you changed and why in the description or {{Retouched}}.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 05:13, 26 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@LizHaywood: I know it seems overly bureaucratic, but even if you're the creator of the murals and the photographs of them, you should send a permission statement to COM:OTRS. Then the pictures could be restored. clpo13(talk) 16:23, 26 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@LizHaywood: Assuming you are the creator of both the murals and the photographs of them, they will be restored once the OTRS process is complete, so OTRS is the one further step needed here. An alternative would be if you have a website as an artist that is clearly under your control, you can indicate there that this account is yours and acts on your behalf, thus bypassing OTRS (which is limited to only a few trusted individuals ans is backlogged by several weeks). If you go that latter route, get here of me either here or on my talk page, and I can work through the undeletion.
Either way, you won't have to redo the work you've already done. - Jmabel ! talk 21:01, 26 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Should I replace File:Giovanni Vailati.jpg with a higher quality version located on the Italian Wikipedia (it:File:Giovanni Vailati.jpg)?

On the Italian Wikipedia there exists an image of Giovanni Vailati which is marked saying that it can't be moved to Wikimedia Commons for technical reasons, my guess is that the fact that there already exists an image on Wikimedia with that exact name is that reason. Should I replace the lower quality image on Commons with that of the higher quality Italian Wikipedia image? Of note is the fact that the image located on the Italian Wikipedia is not of the same physical photograph as that on Wikimedia Commons, for this reason would it make more sense to upload the file separately with a title such as "Giovanni Vailati 2"? The Editor's Apprentice (talk) 01:53, 27 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Awesome, thank! Does the Italian Wikipedia file actually meet all of the criteria to be uploaded to Commons? Once I've made the upload to Wikimedia Commons, should I propose to have the version on the Italian Wikipedia deleted? Is there some special way that I should mark that the file was originally from a Wikipedia? —The Editor's Apprentice (Talk) 05:21, 27 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Sure looks legit for Commons.
The Italian Wikipedia has a {{NowCommons}} template; given the difference of name, I'd put that on the file and leave it there for at least a few days before deleting.
Also certainly before removing it from the Italian Wikipedia, make sure all references to it there have been appropriately changed to the new filename. - Jmabel ! talk 15:51, 27 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

How to get Picture which is not mine

I wanted to add some details in a wiki page "Shimadzu Company" for which i need to upload an image.

Few weeks ago a photograph i uploaded for a page i on a Kpop celeb got deleted due to copywriter issue. I had basically taken it off the web and uploaded. I was informed thats its not allowed and has to be taken off. I do not wish to repeat the same mistake.

So how can i upload a new image (i am not the owner and its available freely online) with out facing the deletion problem. Or is there a way to get someone else (who is the owner of it -- im not sure who -- upload request??) to get it on wiki.

Asikm03 (talk) — Preceding undated comment was added at 13:11, 27 March 2019‎ (UTC)[reply]

"copyright" not "copywriter" (the latter is also a word, but not closely related).
"Freely available online" has nothing to do with the matter. Someone does not lose copyright by publishing, however widely, nor do we gain a right to infringe their copyright because someone else did.
What you are asking is basically "how can I give away something that I don't own and someone else does"? You can't. Instead, you have two possible courses of action.
  1. Arrange an opportunity to take a picture yourself. Then it has your copyright, and you can license it as you wish.
  2. Convince the owner of the copyright to release it under a free license. See COM:OTRS for how they do this; I believe there are several other related pages and someone may be able to point you at them.
It may be that you cannot readily get a free-licensed or public domain image of the subject you want. This happens. That is why quite a few Wikipedia articles do not have pictures. - Jmabel ! talk 16:03, 27 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Asikm03: First, go to the company's Wikipedia article, in this case en:Shimadzu Corp. Then, find their official website from that article's infobox or external links, in this case http://www.shimadzu.com/index.html. Then, look for the new logo or another image on that site, in the case of the logo https://www.shimadzu.com/profiles/shimadzu_corporate/themes/shimadzu_corporate/images/common/logo.png. Copy the logo or image (in case you do get authorization to upload) and URL. Then, look for licensing for the logo or image, typically at or near the bottom of the site, in this case "Copyright(C)2019 Shimadzu Corporation. All Rights Reserved". We can't accept that per COM:L. Then, find contact info, in this case the "CONTACT US" link https://www.shimadzu.com/contact/index.html. Then, find the appropriate contact form link, "Corporate Information" link https://www.shimadzu.com/form/ci/contact.html. Then, fill out the form, mentioning the logo URL and the website URL, with some language from en:WP:ERP, and submit it.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 18:11, 27 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
That logo https://www.shimadzu.com/profiles/shimadzu_corporate/themes/shimadzu_corporate/images/common/logo.png looks simple enough to be {{PD-ineligible}}. - Jmabel ! talk 23:49, 27 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The necessary instructions are on Commons:OTRS#Declaration of consent for all enquiries. The photographer should attach the image to the e-mail. Ruslik (talk) 14:21, 27 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
After the new image is uploaded, the article needs to be edited to replace the old image with new one. Ruslik (talk) 14:23, 27 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Also: within Commons, upload the picture to a new filename, just like any other picture. The old picture remains a valid part of history; then, as Ruslik0 says, you make the appropriate changes in the articles in the various Wikipedias, and perhaps on Wikidata. - Jmabel ! talk 16:07, 27 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

convert a .tiff file

Is there a tool or method recommended to convert a .tiff file in Wikimedia Commons to a .jpg file or other file format?

  Thanks, Tibet Nation (talk) 14:56, 27 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
If you click on the different size links below the image, these are all jpeg format. The largest size will be identical in resolution to the TIFF, and you should be able to download the jpeg from your browser once you have viewed it. -- (talk) 15:34, 27 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
(Edit conflict) @Tibet Nation: any image editor should be able to handle that. Paint.NET is a popular tool, as is GIMP. Just open the TIFF in the editor and save it as a JPEG or PNG. Even simpler, as Fæ says, every TIFF file on Wikimedia Commons generates a JPEG preview in several sizes, which you can download directly from the file page. clpo13(talk) 15:39, 27 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Tibet Nation, , and Clpo13: Actually, the thumbnails here are .png, not .jpg.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 20:56, 27 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you all for your helpful hints- I now can try to crop some of the high quality .tiff files. The crop tool that I enjoy using, (on the left side of the Commons page) unfortunately does not crop .tiff files. Thanks again for your time, Tibet Nation (talk) 15:41, 28 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Donald Trung: No, that's not actually true. Just to give some widely scattered examples of exceptions (by no means an exhaustive list):
  • Use of an image may be limited by personality rights or by trademark.
  • Someone might be living in a country where certain images are not allowed (e.g. the use of certain Nazi imagery in several European countries).
  • If you are doing a photomosaic in a circumstance it is not possible to give credit to individual copyright-holders, you cannot use images that require attribution.
  • If you are creating a work for a publisher who requires overt documents to be signed by copyright-holders (e.g. indemnification and guarantee that they are the copyright-holder; quite common in print media).

Hi. Yesterday I gave to publish an article but so far it has not been on the Internet. I received a message saying that one of the images was deleted because it infringed copyright but I do not know if the entire article was deleted. Also, there is not an option to place another image and so my article is not deleted. I'm a novice in this and I need help from someone who can give me answers, I'd really appreciate it.

How to upload photos on behalf of an amateur photographer

An acquaintance of mine wishes to contribute a dozen photos to Wikipedia page List of covered bridges in New Brunswick and to be credited as author while attributing a free license to the media. I'd like to upload on his behalf since I've uploaded a few, while he doesn't have an account. Please advise simplest procedure. --Cornellier (talk) 23:30, 27 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Cornellier: He can create an account, use his normal means of reaching the public to declare permission with a COM:L compatible license, give you upload and licensing permission in writing (which you can then scan and send via OTRS), or send such permission himself via OTRS with a carbon copy to you.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 23:46, 27 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
"The current backlog for tickets in English is approximately 197 days." Thanks but it looks like it'd be much easier for me to give him instructions to create his own account and upload them himself. I was trying to save him the trouble but it's less hassle than giving "permission in writing" etc. --Cornellier (talk) 00:11, 28 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Uploading a picture that is in the public domain from the Library of Congress, Prints and Photographs Division

After reading through the do's and don'ts (and becoming glassy-eyed), it's not clear to me whether a picture in the Historic American Engineering Record Collection, Prints and Photographs Division, Library of Congress, can be included in commons.wikimedia. From the website http://www.loc.gov/rr/print/res/114_habs.html, it says "Material in these collections is generally considered to be in the public domain." If it does keep saying that you can't upload any videos then you should probably report it to the Phabricator. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 02:03, 30 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Xinqidong: Thank you for your question. I would want to ask what is your "wiki page"? Is it any of your user pages, or the article on English Wikipedia about Xinqi Dong? Please be also reminded that your upload has also been deleted for lack of permission. Please feel free to ask me should you have further problems, thank you.

— Preceding unsigned comment added by МаринаРомашкина (talk • contribs)

@EugeneZelenko: Why did you sign this question as your own? Ruslik (talk) 17:18, 29 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
No I signed only my question. Isn't bot should take care about unsigned posts? --EugeneZelenko (talk) 22:40, 29 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Without another signature it looked like you signed everything above. Ruslik (talk) 10:21, 30 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

File:Germaine.dieterlene.jpg

I, Ricardo Costa, Portuguese film director, declare to be the author of this frame, intending that it will be copy-right free for any purpose, including Wikipedia. The file has been just uploaded. — Preceding unsigned comment added by RCfilms (talk • contribs) 17:58, 29 March 2019‎ (UTC)[reply]

  • Convenience link: File:Germaine.dieterlene.jpg.
  • @RCfilms: Sounds like you should either (1) go through COM:OTRS (via the email address indicated in the template with which that image was marked) or (2) state on a website clearly owned by you or the film company that User:RCfilms is authorized to upload to Commons on behalf of you or the film company. If the latter, then link that from (2a) the "permissions" section of the {{tl|information} for the image and (2b) your user page. Jmabel ! talk 23:15, 29 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Also, if "copyright-free for any purpose" really is your intent, then Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International is the wrong license. That would be CC-0. But, honestly, I think that retaining at least attribution rights as you do under Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 is a better choice. - Jmabel ! talk 23:19, 29 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

A list of file names in a category

Is there any way to extract a list of file names in a category WITHOUT the pictures. Bengt Nyman (talk) 18:24, 29 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You can get this kind of thing out of the API. For instance, try this query in the API Sandbox. --bjh21 (talk) 18:45, 29 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, but way over my head, I don't know where to start. Help !? Bengt Nyman (talk) 22:57, 29 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Bengt Nyman: for something with a GUI you might give PetScan a try; although it reports quite a bit more than filenames, the output is in various structured formats, from which it shouldn’t be too hard to extract just the names. It can also include the contents of subcategories to a specified depth, which you might find useful.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 05:23, 30 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Odysseus1479: Thanks, could you please give my a step by step, for dummies! Bengt Nyman (talk) 14:46, 30 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

File uploads

I am trying to include reference files which are downloaded from other sites. The files pertain to Biographies and Genealogy. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jlastowski (talk • contribs) 13:47, 30 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Jlastowski: Signing your posts on talk pages is required by Commons:Signatures policy. To do so, simply add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comments. Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and a timestamp will then automatically be added when you save your comment. Signing your comments helps people to find out who said something and provides them with a link to your user/talk page (for further discussion).
We will need permission for them, please see COM:FS.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:20, 30 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
