Template talk:Original uploader

Please repair the pseudo-internationalization: The original uploader was Uwca aus der Deutsch Wikipedia (as I see it in file descriptions) is nonsense, there should either appear The original uploader was Uwca of German Wikipedia (all English) or all German/French/... Moreover "aus der Deutsch Wikipedia" is not correct German, that'd be "aus der deutschen/deutschsprachigen Wikipedia". → «« Man77 »» [de]·[bar] 10:14, 1 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

We're working on getting it fully translated into German. Hold tight, in the meantime, or take a look at my talk page at the request I've placed there for a correct translation of every language listed on Wikimedia (it's not always simple: "deutsch" -> "deutschsprachigen" but "latein" -> "lateinisprachigen"). Usefulness of this template?

[edit]

I don't see that this template is very useful. I have seen it in the author field of information template. But that should only contain author information not uploader information. Upload information should be placed in the "Original upload log" section and not be duplicated in the information template. /Ö 20:13, 11 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Also, When the uploader is the author it is easer to fix bot moves if this template is not used in the author field. With plain text:

|Author=Original uploader was [[:en:User:Acntx|Acntx]] at [http://en.wikipedia.org en.wikipedia]

You just have to remove "Original uploader was ". If the template is used

|Author={{original uploader|Acntx|wikipedia|en}}

You have to write wikicode and/or copy things around to make correct links. /19:41, 11 June 2012 (UTC)

The idea behind it is that my bot, which iterates on files about once per day, is often unable to tell for sure if the original uploader is the author or not. If it knows it's the author, it will change it to {{User at project}}. If it's sure the uploader isn't the author, I might change it to remove that altogether from the author field. If it's unsure though, the point here is internationalization. If you'd like, I can set the bot to run 24-48 hours after the upload. FYI, to change it the way you did before, just change the text "original uploader" to "user at project." Again, this is for internationalization. What does {{Original uploader}} mean?

Please have a look at Commons:Translators' noticeboard#What_does_.7B.7Boriginal_uploader.7D.7D_mean.3F:

It will be better to use at «projectname (langname)» in translations, since at «Αγγλικά Βικιπαίδεια» looks silly in Greek and my thought is that it will look also strange in many other languages, but «Βικιπαίδεια (Αγγλικά)» is ok.--Xoristzatziki (talk) 20:15, 21 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
