In the Autumn of 2019, several members of Chacruna’s Council for the Protection of Sacred Plants (CPSP) initiated a project to invite well organized psychedelic plant medicine churches to participate in a private meeting which took place after Chacruna’s Psychedelic Liberty Summit (PLS) in April of 2020.

The intention of the meeting was to begin to form a self regulating association of churches that could mutually support each other in protecting and extending religious freedom and empower the ethical and responsible use of sacred plants. At the conclusion of the meeting, about a dozen congregations decided they did want to form an organization, which eventually culminated in the creation of the Sacred Plant Alliance (SPA)

Chacruna incubated SPA initially, and then SPA incorporated in July 2021 as a religious nonprofit corporation for the purpose of operating as an association of churches, with Chacruna fiscally sponsoring SPA projects. Chacruna’s support was essential in helping SPA to establish and develop its governance and nonprofit structure, to the point that it is able to operate as a member-led nonprofit organization.

SPA is a self-regulating, interfaith association of churches, with a mission to provide education and information as an alliance of organized communities, legally referred to as churches, for which the ceremonial use of sacraments is central to the exercise of their religious beliefs.

In collaboration with Chacruna, SPA was able to: produce public, educational materials, legal briefs and articles that support the respective missions and activities of both SPA and Chacruna.

We are honored to announce that as of April 2024, with significant support in a variety of ways including the fiscal sponsorship program of Chacruna, SPA is now a federally recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

SPA is accepting new members and continuing the effort to engage in and educate others about best practices and self-governance through collaborative ethics, transparency, and accountability. This new honorary membership program is offered to communities who are relatively new and still refining their procedures, but who have leaders with significant sacramental and leadership experience. You can find more details about this exciting possibility and the link to the application in SPA’s Invitation to Apply letter.
