IOM’s Immigration and Border Governance (IBG) Division supports Member States in improving the policy, legislation, operational systems, human resources and administrative and technical structures required to respond more effectively to diverse migration and border management challenges. Immigration and Border Governance activities are in line with IOM’s commitment to facilitate orderly, safe and regular migration and mobility. IBG activities are designed as partnerships with governments and other relevant stakeholders to identify needs, determine priority areas, and shape and deliver interventions. The IBG team's activities are continuously evolving to meet new migration challenges on the national, regional and international level. There are two distinct and complementary portfolios within IBG: Border and Identity Solutions (BIS) and Immigration and Visas (IV). In addition, the IBG Division is in charge of facilitating a number of organizational cross-thematic initiatives, notably the Legal Identity Strategy, IOM’s African Capacity Building Center for Migration and Border Management (ACBC) in Tanzania, and IOM’s flagship training programme, the “Essentials in Migration Management 2.0 (emm2.0)”, along with involvement in institutional activities related to COVID-19 response and recovery and the UN Network on Migration (UNNM).

Hear from Damien Thuriaux, Head of Division at IOM Immigration and Border Governance, as we reflect on last week’s global workshop on migrant smuggling, organized with UNODC under the framework of the United Nations Network on Migration. 🌍 The workshop brought together a diverse group of emerging #researchers from Europe, Africa, and the Americas to explore key themes around individual decision-making processes behind smuggling-facilitated journeys, and the impact of law enforcement operations on local development and patterns of mobility. With these insights, we’re now gearing up to turn discussions into actionable steps, including a special publication of selected #policypapers early next year. 🚀📖 Exciting progress ahead! 📚✨

Yesterday, we kicked off the first day of our research workshop on migrant smuggling, diving into thought-provoking discussions on this critical issue. 🌍🛳️ Six of twelve shortlisted authors presented a diverse range of research focused on migrant smuggling, including the complex interactions between smugglers and law enforcement at borders 🚓, the legal implications of criminalizing smuggled migrants steering small boats 🚤, and the unique challenges faced by Indigenous communities in Canada and the USA, who are affected by smuggling across their cross-border territories 🗺️. We also examined the decision-making processes of migrants transiting through smuggling routes in the Balkans, Iran, and Turkey 🛤️, the key role of brokers in facilitating smuggling from South Asia to Europe 🌏, and the ongoing challenges in identifying missing migrants at the EU-Moroccan borders - where smuggling networks continue to operate 🧭. Excited to continue these critical discussions today as we work towards a publication coming early next year 📚, featuring selected studies from the workshop. Stay tuned for more insights! 📖✨ #MigrationResearch #Smuggling #InternationalCooperation #BorderStudies #ComingSoon

Latest from #Malawi!
🚀 Exciting progress for establishing Malawi's Migration Information Data Analysis System (#MIDAS)! Since yesterday, IOM and the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services have been meeting to review draft MIDAS SOPs to establish clear roles and responsibilities for MIDAS operators in Malawi. During the workshop, operating challenges are addressed, recommendations are identified, and a training plan is developed to ensure uniformity in the use of the system and to maximize its effectiveness. Today we work together to finalize and validate the SOP for MIDAS in Malawi to enhance MIDAS implementation at Malawi's border posts. #FacilitatingTrade #IntegratedBorderGovernance #Malawi
