My hands-on experience is strong and accurate in a wide range of domains, going from distributed application design, database and data management to system administration (DevOps) and team leading. More than an engineer, I'm a doer and a strong team player leading by example. My motto could be summarized like this: "We're only one small step away from infeasibility: the first step".
My favorite topics in IT-related fields includes client-server, distributed and scalable systems and data retrieval.

NoSQL enthusiast and Apache Committer, I give frequent public presentations in local and European IT conferences.     Big data management is often characterized by three Vs: Volume, Velocity and Variety. While traditional batch-oriented systems like map-reduce are able to scale-out and process very large volumes of data in parallel, they also introduce some significant latency. In this paper, we focus on the second V (Velocity) of the Big Data triad; We present a case study where we use a popular open-source stream processing engine (Storm) to perform real-time integration and trend detection on Twitter and Bitly streams. We describe our trend detection solution below and experimentally demonstrate that our architecture can effectively process data in real-time - even for high-velocity streams.

    A method for compressing a set of small strings may include calculating n-gram frequencies for a plurality of n-grams over the set of small strings, selecting a subset of n-grams from the plurality of n-grams based on the calculated n-gram frequencies, defining a mapping table that maps each n-gram of the subset of n-grams to a unique code, and compressing the set of small strings by replacing n-grams within each small string in the set of small strings with corresponding unique codes from the mapping table. The method may use linear optimization to select a subset of n-grams that achieves a maximum space saving amount over the set of small strings for inclusion in the mapping table. The unique codes may be variable-length one or two byte codes. The set of small strings may be domain names.
