The Three Reasons to Choose Luxury Second-Hand Over Fast Fashion: 💡Reason #1 - Numbers Can Be Deceptive: A recent study conducted by Vestiaire Collective reveals a surprising conclusion: buying second-hand luxury items can be more economical in the long run than succumbing to the allure of fast fashion. Take the example of a Zara trench coat, which is cheaper to purchase but of lower quality. With an estimated deterioration cost of $4.82 per wear, it proves to be an unwise expense over a short to medium period of time. In contrast, a Burberry trench coat costs only $0.89 per wear. Thus, although it is more expensive to purchase, the intrinsic quality of the product allows it to have four times the durability on average compared to a fast-fashion piece. 🔄 Reason #2 - Beyond Cost, There's Behavior: Fast fashion not only entails a high cost per wear; it also encourages overconsumption and rapid depreciation of clothing to follow fleeting trends. Seasons are no longer respected, collections are churned out, and consumers find themselves in a continuous cycle of stimulation. What are the possible alternatives to reconcile a passion for fashion, beauty, and conscious consumption? Second-hand luxury asserts itself. It offers timeless classics at attractive prices, which can even be resold if necessary. Demand for these second-hand pieces in the market is strong, unlike fast-fashion items. 🌍 Reason #3 - And What About Our Future? : While second-hand luxury is not (yet) accessible to everyone, the fast-fashion model appears detrimental from all angles. For the environment, but also for consumers' wallets. Aware of this issue, Vestiaire Collective calls for a change in mentality and deeper reflection before making purchases. As fast-fashion giant SHEIN prepares for an IPO in the U.S., a new report suggests that workers at some of its suppliers are still clocking 75 hour weeks, despite assurances the company would tighten its labor standards. The report details a follow-up investigation by Swiss advocacy group Public Eye after it found in 2021 that staff members across sites in Guangzhou, China, were subject to excessive overtime and poor labor conditions. Following negative press in the wake of the previous report, Shein promised to improve its standards. BETWEEN HERITAGE AND RAPTURE, HOW THE YOUNG GENERATION IS REDEFINING LUXURY Diane Vanderschelden for FashionUnited: Key Takeaways: 🐴 Parents continue to play a crucial role in introducing young people to luxury. In the three countries analyzed in this study, at least half of the young people interviewed admit to having inherited their taste for luxury from their parents. This is reflected in statements such as: "My taste for luxury comes from my parents, I like what they passed on to me" and "My taste for luxury is a mixture of what my parents gave me and new tastes that I developed. " 🐂 The younger generation is also strongly influenced by brand communication. In the era of social networks and multiple points of contact, brand communication and the celebrities who represent it remain powerful levers for introducing young people to luxury. Indeed, when asked about the different sources of influence that introduced them to luxury, young people first cite advertising from luxury brands (47 percent), luxury brand websites (44 percent) and celebrities ( 44 percent). In comparison, family inheritance stands at 39 percent. 🦌 Young people are more attracted to novelty, valuing the symbols of a new and promising world. While their parents' generation favors brands highlighting know-how, product quality, and a rich historical past, younger generations aspire to more. They ask for more. They are looking for “innovative brands”, “new brands” and “brands that break the codes, not respecting the classic rules”. Unlike their parents who prefer discreet brands, young people appreciate powerful brands that stand out. Active on social networks and often in search of social validation, they need brands that promote them. In addition, luxury brands represent for them a guarantee of good taste and informed choice, with 63 percent of young people admitting that luxury brands “give them confidence” (63 percent of young French people, 83 percent of young Americans and 94 percent of young Chinese). 🐰 Younger generations tend to reinvent luxury values by integrating the idea of luxury more anchored in everyday life. For 63 percent of young French people, 75 percent of young Americans and 92 percent of young Chinese, “luxury is part of my daily life”. 🐪 Another notable marker of this generation is their attachment to the eco-responsible dimension of brands. 🐑 Some of the perceived benefits of luxury are the same from one generation to the next, in particular the idea that luxury allows you to “differentiate yourself, stand out from others”. This is the case for 73 percent of 15-35 year olds and 74 percent of 50-75 year olds. LUXURY WATCH CRISIS: CAN GEN Z SAVE SWISS BRANDS? Avery Booker for Jing Daily Key Takeaways: 📉 According to recent data from the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry, Swiss watch exports dropped 3.3% YoY in the first half of this year, with exports to mainland China falling 21.6% YoY and exports to Hong Kong falling nearly 20%. The story in the rest of the world was better, with other markets rising, but by just 1%. ⏱ Johann Rupert , chairman of Richemont — owner of Cartier, Vacheron Constantin, IWC, Jaeger-LeCoultre, and Van Cleef & Arpels —recently sounded the alarm on the issues facing the global luxury watch industry. Speaking at Richemont’s annual general meeting, Rupert emphasized that the global boom in luxury watch demand has waned. He pointed to sluggish sales in China and Hong Kong as major concerns, advising watchmakers to reduce production to align with the softer market. 👾 This goes part of the way in explaining how other regions have shown resilience this year. The US strengthened its position as the top market for Swiss watch exports, posting 3.8% sales growth in the first half of the year and accounting for a significant share of the industry's revenue. Powered in no small part by Chinese consumers capitalizing on a weaker yen, Japan also performed well, with a 7.7% increase in sales in H1. 💎 The question facing the Swiss watch industry is how to encourage Chinese consumers to shop, and better tap new demographics. Despite near-term challenges like high unemployment and low starting salaries, China’s younger generation does present a significant long-term opportunity for Swiss watchmakers. Tech-savvy, highly brand-aware, globally connected, and increasingly affluent, Chinese millennials and Gen Zers are already redefining luxury consumption in China in segments like apparel and beauty, and hard luxury very well could be next. 🌧 According to a report by Bain & Company, Chinese consumers are growing more cautious about flaunting their wealth in the face of a challenging macroeconomic environment, sluggish GDP growth, and weak consumer confidence. “Wealthy customers are afraid of being seen as too ostentatious or too showy,” Claudia D'Arpizio, global head of fashion and luxury at Bain & Company, recently told CNBC. This sentiment echoes a similar phenomenon observed during the 2008-2009 financial crisis in the US, where consumers became hesitant to display their affluence openly. 💰 What’s next for the Swiss watch industry, globally and in the Greater China market?
