Climate Change. Conflicts and displacement. These are two of the defining crises of our lifetimes. Amid record levels of displacement and a climate crisis disproportionately impacts those forced to flee, High Commissioner Filippo Grandi attended #COP29. This was his message to world leaders.

In the last 600 days, 3 million people have fled Sudan since the start of the civil war, and over 8 million are displaced inside the country. Families have been torn apart, and countless people are living in fear and uncertainty. We cannot turn away from their suffering. The world must act now to protect those who have lost everything.

“I lost everything,” says Mimi. “If you go to my village, everything has been burned down; I cannot farm any longer.” Mimi's family, home and farm were cruelly snatched from her during climate change fueled violence in Nigeria's Benue State. Today, she’s a volunteer teaching assistant at Ichwa camp, where she brings joy and hope to displaced children through song and storytelling. For Mimi and thousands like her, UNHCR’s presence is more than support - it’s a partnership in survival. The war in Ukraine isn’t over. Shelling and air attacks continue and countless families still need urgent support. During her visit, UNHCR’s Kelly T. Clements witnessed the ongoing crisis first-hand—the toll on people’s livelihoods, health and futures is devastating. With winter nearing, the teams on the ground are ramping up essential support: emergency shelter, cash assistance and protection, as well as crucial house repairs, all through strong partnerships with local organizations. Now is not the time to turn away.

Winter is here. Rain, flooding, snow and sub-zero temperatures are threatening the lives of people forced to spend winter far from home. Whatever it takes, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is here to protect people forced to flee from the cold.
