🌡️Cities around the world are grappling with extreme heat. However most local adaptation plans and policies aren't sufficient to deal with likely increases in extreme heat events, according to a study examining 7,500+ heat mitigation actions by 2,500+ cities. In Europe, the lack of adaptation actions could result in 96,000 fatalities per year from extreme heat, compared with 2,750 annual deaths at present. This chart shows that extreme heat is the most reported hazard in risk and vulnerability assessments (RVAs) in Europe (93%) followed by heavy precipitation and droughts & water scarcity (89%), floods & sea level rise (85%), and wildfires (71%). All other hazards (e.g., extreme cold, storms, mass movement) are reported in less than 55% of the RVAs. The bottom chart digs into extreme heat and demonstrates that the current probability and impact are most commonly rated as medium/high (76% and 73% of the RVAs, respectively), while, in the future, cities foresee an increase in both intensity (92%) and frequency (93%). Dedicated to building disaster resilience and tackling climate change through implementation of the Sendai Framework
Info
At the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), we're dedicated to helping countries and communities lower risk and raise resilience in the face of natural and human-induced hazards. Our work is guided by the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, a 15-year agreement adopted by the international community in 2015, which was the first building block of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

💡How can AI help reduce flash flood risks? 🌊 Flash #floods can be destructive both in urban and rural settings. A timely warning and response are vital, but hydro-meteorological monitoring networks and real-time data acquisition are often expensive and require a high level of expertise. New automated technologies using #AI, together with increased awareness of flood risk, can make managing floods easier, more affordable, and help save lives. #AI4DRR Read more ➡️ https://ow.ly/gt1U50U6VNW

🌍 Climate hazards hit harder in low-income regions, but research funding doesn’t match the need: it takes 100 times more people affected by floods, droughts, and landslides to spark the same level of research as seen in wealthier countries, Universität Potsdamresearch shows. To achieve a sustainable future, we must bridge this research gap and bring resources where they’re needed most ➡️ https://ow.ly/HrfT50U5V6W #COP29

🌡️ "We are not going to air-condition our way out of this!" "The extreme heat problem is enormous and requires transformational actions. We need an integrated short, medium and long-term approach to tackling mounting extreme heat disaster risks," says Kamal Kishore, SRSG for Disaster Risk Reduction. 🌐Engage with his ten-point DRR action plan for the consideration of G20 Brasil 2024 in response to Secretary-General Guterres' call for action on extreme heat ➡️ https://ow.ly/ALgx50U5Tbf #COP29

We have a responsibility to reduce disaster risks for the most vulnerable – and those forced to flee conflict and fragility are amongst the most exposed to hazards.
People forced to flee war, violence, and persecution increasingly find themselves on the front line of the climate crisis—a threat pushing them into even more dire situations. Of the more than 120 million forcibly displaced worldwide, three out of four face high to extreme climate hazards —from food shortages and floods to tensions around scarce resources. As world leaders are discussing the urgent need for #ClimateAction at #COP29, find out more from the UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency: https://lnkd.in/dNqhsap4
