Least developed countries contribute less than 4% of global emissions but face some of the most severe climate impacts. Carbon markets can contribute to development financing, but fragmented markets, low prices, and concentration in only a few countries limit their potential. In our race against global warming, every fraction of a degree matters. Renewable energy can decouple prosperity from CO2 emissions and bring electricity to 680 million people, reducing poverty. To reduce fossil fuel dependency, we need to expand renewable energy production and accelerate trade in these goods. Solar and wind energy, despite growth, only account for 5% of global consumption. High tariffs and trade costs limit access, especially in developing countries. Revising trade policy is essential to support renewable energy expansion, enhance value addition, and integrate developing countries into global value chains. South-South trade and regional integration are key. As the world approaches the 2050 target for net-zero emissions, the journey toward this goal underscores the need for cohesive trade and investment strategies that address climate challenges. Achieving ambitious goals, such as tripling renewable energy production by 2030, has proven challenging given the complex web of global policies – particularly the surge in new industrial policies that use trade policy instruments to protect domestic production. Africa has vast mineral deposits that are essential for the global shift to a low-carbon future and a fair, environmentally responsible digital economy. The continent holds over a fifth of the world's reserves for a dozen metals essential to the energy transition and the production of electric vehicles, solar panels and batteries. Developing countries play a crucial role in the global supply chain for transition minerals and metals but face the challenge of lacking the financing and quality investment capabilities needed to add value.
