Housed at K-Hof Kammerhof Museum in central Gmunden (Austria), Klo & So is home to the world’s largest collection of historical sanitary objects. The collection has been meticulously curated by LAUFEN for over 70 years, illustrating the history of bathroom culture and the importance of the toilet in a world in which almost half of humanity still lacks access to safe sanitary facilities. The absence of such facilities has severe impacts on clean drinking water, health, and the environment. To mark 100 years of LAUFEN at Gmunden, Austrian artist and curator Petra Zechmeister has been commissioned to redesign the exhibition at Klo & So, reflecting the current significance of the topic. The result is an informative and entertaining journey through the history of the toilet and sanitary ceramics. The exhibition spans from Emperor Franz's mobile 'hunting throne' outhouse and Herbert von Karajan's toilet complete with a shower and dryer to the retro bathroom designs of the 60s and 70s, and innovative LAUFEN products like save!, the first industrial-standard urine-separating toilet. The centenary celebration of LAUFEN in Gmunden coincides with Gmunden's participation as the ‘European Capital of Culture Salzkammergut 2024’. For the first time in 40 years, the European Union chose an entire region – encompassing 23 Austrian municipalities in Salzburg and Styria – to showcase the vibrant fusion of life, work, and culture in rural areas. PALOMBA is a collection inspired by the power of sea water to carve, shape, and smoothe, creating organic contours that reflect the eternal evolution of nature. The PALOMBA freestanding washbasin features soft and flowing forms that though could have been shaped by the sea were actually hand crafted by artisans in the LAUFEN Gmunden factory, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. This VIENNA DESIGN WEEK, LAUFEN space Wien is opening its doors to the public. Located in central Vienna, LAUFEN space Wien is at the heart of the conversation about bathroom culture, creating a space where the social significance of the everyday space can be discussed. Internationally renowned Norwegian design studio Snøhetta headed the renovation of LAUFEN space Wien in 2023. The result is a sleek space combining our latest collections with the opportunity for playful experimentation. During Vienna Design Week, LAUFEN Austria inaugurated ‘Colour Archaeology’, an exhibition presenting Roberto Sironi’s comprehensive research into the tones that have defined ceramics since time immemorial. The culmination of the designer’s investigation has led to the development of a new 12-tone palette that will be used exclusively in LAUFEN products. LAUFEN space Wien hosted ‘Time Jump’ on Monday 23 September on the occasion of Vienna Design Week. The event featured a fascinating keynote by Snøhetta’s Patrick Lüth on his visions for making architecture sustainable, renewable, and future-proof. Snøhetta, an internationally renowned Norwegian design studio, were the creative minds behind the renovation of LAUFEN space Wien in 2023. The second talk of the evening was given by Roberto Sironi, the curator of ‘Colour Archaeology’, an exhibition taking an in-depth look at the tones and hues that have defined ceramic production since time immemorial. Sironi’s comprehensive investigations have resulted in the development of a new 12-tone colour palette exclusively for LAUFEN.
