The Idiap Research Institute is a research institute of national importance established in 1991 by the City of Martigny, the State of Valais, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne, the University of Geneva, and Swisscom with funding from the Dalle Molle Foundation. Inspired by Angelo Dalle Molle's innovative approach, we aim to improve quality of life through scientific advances in artificial intelligence. Our tagline reads, "AI for Society." Our multidisciplinary research is represented by four research programs: Human-AI Teaming, Sustainable and Resilient Societies, AI for Life, and AI for Everyone. Our multicultural environment includes a dedicated R&D engineering team as well as an administrative team. The institute has 18 Principal Investigators and supports more than 75 students, including PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, and national and international master’s students and interns. In addition to research, Idiap fosters knowledge dissemination and actively engages in industrial partnerships. We are based in the heart of the Swiss Alps, in Martigny (VS).

𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗕𝗶𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗙𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 🔍 📄 A team led by Dr. Petr Motlicek has developed an innovative approach to media analysis that could be game-chaning in a society where misinformation is a daily occurrence. Instead of relying on social media or content analysis, their method examines longitudinal web interactions—how media outlets link to each other over time—to understand political bias and factual reliability. Using large-scale graphs, the team created a network of news sources connected by hyperlinks, allowing for a more accurate classification of media bias. By incorporating four reinforcement-learning strategies, the team has made significant improvements in automating media bias profiling, independent of language or content. Moreover, they have also released the largest annotated dataset of 17K media outlets categorized by factual reporting and political bias, providing a valuable resource for future studies. This research was funded by the EU Horizon 2020 program as part of the CRiTERIA Project, aimed at improving trust in media sources and supporting the development of reliable news ecosystems. Excited to share two recent highlights from Idiap's innovation efforts. Another significant 2024 milestone: Doctolib's acquisition of Idiap spin-off Typeless is a testament to the innovation and talent within the Swiss tech ecosystem. We are thrilled for Maxime Vidal and the entire Typeless team on this success. A big thank you to Swiss National Science Foundation SNSF and Innosuisse for their invaluable support through the BRIDGE joint program. The ICC - Idiap Create Challenge, our annual 9-day AI Hackathon, was another success: we received 5.5x more applicants than available places. Thanks to the invaluable support of Idiap's AI experts and mentors from our partner institutions, the ICC generated a wealth of innovative projects. We are excited to see these projects evolve into real-world applications, following in the footsteps of Matthieu SAUSSAYE's winning team from last year and the successful incorporation of Pulse Partners. After more than 11 years at EPFL, Lausanne, it is time for me to say goodbye to this great institution and the people that makes it. It has been a joy and an honor to be part of EPFL since 2013 and it has, among many other things, been my most productive period as a researcher. This is in no small part due to the institution and the people it attracts. Over the years, I have had the privilege of working with more than 25 doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers who have often taught me more than I taught them. Teaching the students at EPFL has always been something special to me. I want to thank all for having chosen to come to EPFL and work with me and it is a delight to see them all succeed in the next stages of their lives. Without forgetting anyone, let me thank everyone I can had the privilege of working with at EPFL over the years. While I will cherish the memory of my time at EPFL, I look forward to the challenges of my next step which will start tomorrow.
