Strain induced irreversible critical current degradation in highly dense Bi-2212 round wire / Bjoerstad, R (CERN) ; Scheuerlein, C (CERN) ; Rikel, M.O. The strain induced critical current degradation of overpressure processed straight Bi 2212/Ag wires has been studied at 77 K in self-field. For the first time superconducting properties, lattice distortions, composite wire stress and strain have been measured simultaneously in a high energy synchrotron beamline. [...]

This article reports a study to identify optimal synthesis parameters for a pure boron precursor prepared following a patented process developed at CNR-SPIN laboratories, performed in the framework of a collaboration between CNR-SPIN and CERN. Boron is a precursor that plays a crucial role in the MgB2wire manufacturing, as a consequence, the synthesis parameters of the superconducting phase have been investigated. [...]

Synchrotron Microtomography Investigation of the Filament Microstructure in Differently Processed Bi-2212 Wires / Scheuerlein, Christian (CERN) ; Rack, Alexander (ESRF, Grenoble) ; Schladitz, Katja (Kaiserslautern U., Math. Dept.) ; Huwig, Luisa (Saarland U.)
The Bi-2212 microstructure and porosity distribution in entire state-of-the-art multifilament wires was characterized by high-energy synchrotron X-ray absorption microtomography after meltprocessing at ambient pressure, at 100 bar overpressure, and at ambient pressure after prior cold isostatic pressing of initially identical as-drawn wires. Beyond the visualization of the Bi-2212 microstructure, the porosity distribution in the different filament bundles has been quantified. [...]

Influence of the oxygen partial pressure on the phase evolution during Bi-2212 wire melt processing / Scheuerlein, C. (CERN) ; Andrieux, J. (Lyon U.) ; Rikel, M.O. (Nexans, Germany) ; Kadar, J. (U. Field Lab.) et al.
We have studied the influence of the oxygen partial pressure pO2 up to 5.5 bar on the phase changes that occur during melt processing of a state-of-the-art Bi-2212 multifilamentary wire. Phase changes have been monitored in situ by high energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD). [...]

Void and Phase Evolution during the Processing of Bi-2212 Superconducting Wires monitored by combined fast Synchrotron Micro-tomography and X-Ray Diffraction / Scheuerlein, C (CERN) ; DiMichiel, M (ESRF, Grenoble) ; Scheel, M (ESRF, Grenoble) ; Jiang, J (Natl. Recent study of the current-limiting mechanisms in Bi-2212 round wires has suggested that agglomeration of the residual Bi-2212 powder porosity into bubbles of filament-diameter size occurs on melting the Bi-2212 filaments. [...]

Evidence for length-dependent wire expansion, filament dedensification and consequent degradation of critical current density in Ag-alloy sheathed Bi-2212 wires / Malagoli, A (Natl. High Mag. Field Lab.) ; Lee, P J (Natl. High Mag. Field Lab.) ; Ghosh, A K (Brookhaven) ; Scheuerlein, C (CERN) ; Di Michiel, M (ESRF, Grenoble) ; Jiang, J (Natl. High Mag. Field Lab.) ; Trociewitz, U P (Natl. High Mag. Field Lab.) ; Hellstrom, E E (Natl. High Mag. Field Lab.) ; Larbalestier, D C (Natl. High Mag. Field Lab.)
It is well known that longer Bi-2212 conductors have significantly lower critical current density (Jc) than shorter ones, and recently it has become clear that a major cause of this reduction is internal gas pressure generated during heat treatment, which expands the wire diameter and dedensifies the Bi-2212 filaments. Here we report on the length-dependent expansion of 5 to 240 cm lengths of state-of-the-art, commercial Ag alloy-sheathed Bi-2212 wire after full and some partial heat treatments. [...]

Analysis of Fe(Se,Te) Films Deposited On Unbuffered Invar 36 / Sylva, Giulia (Genoa U.) ; Malagoli, Andrea (CNR-SPIN, Genova) ; Bellingeri, Emilio (CNR-SPIN, Genova) ; Putti, Marina (Genoa U.) ; Ferdeghini, Carlo (CNR-SPIN, Genova) ; Vannozzi, Angelo (ENEA, Frascati) ; Celentano, Giuseppe (ENEA, Frascati) ; Hopkins, Simon C (CERN) ; Lunt, Alexander (CERN) ; Ballarino, Amalia (CERN) et al.
In this paper, the feasibility of producing Fe(Se,Te)-coated conductors on cost-effective, unbuffered Invar 36 substrates is studied. A suitable substrate with a sharp {001}<100> texture and a misorientation angle lower than 10° was developed, and the possibility of growing epitaxial thin films without any buffer layer was demonstrated. Effects of K excess in microstructure of (Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$)Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ superconducting powders / Bellingeri, Emilio (CNR-SPIN, Naples) ; Bernini, Cristina (CNR-SPIN, Naples) ; Loria, Federico (CNR-SPIN, Naples) ; Traverso, Andrea (CNR-SPIN, Naples) ; Leveratto, Alessandro (CNR-SPIN, Naples) ; Braccini, Valeria (CNR-SPIN, Naples) ; Ballarino, Amalia (CERN) ; Malagoli, Andrea (CNR-SPIN, Naples)
Iron-based superconductors (IBSs) are promising for high-field applications due to their exceptional characteristics, like ultrahigh upper critical field and minimal electromagnetic anisotropy. Creating multifilamentary superconducting wires with elevated transport critical current density is essential for practical use. [...]

Bi-2212 round wire is made by the powder-in-tube technique. An unavoidable property of powder-in-tube conductors is that there is about 30% void space in the as-drawn wire. [...]
