The goal of the ENUBET project is to demonstrate that a precision of ∼1% on measurement of the absolute neutrino cross section at GeV scale can be achieved by monitoring the positron production in the decay tunnel coming from the three-body semileptonic decays of kaons. The baseline option for the tunnel instrumentation employs a fine-grained shashlik calorimeter with a 4.3 X 0 longitudinal segmentation to separate positrons and pions coming from other decay modes of kaons. Shashlik calorimeters equipped with a compact readout based on Silicon PhotoMultipliers can be longitudinally segmented by directly coupling the WLS fibers with the photosensors thus embedding the readout in the bulk of the calorimeter. ENUBET has been conceived to monitor positrons from $K_{e3}$ decays in conventional neutrino beam decay tunnels in order to provide a direct determination of the $\nu_e$ flux at the source, paving the way to a measurement of electron neutrino cross section with 1% precision. Since 2016 remarkable results on the prototyping and testing of the tunnel instrumentation for positron tagging have been achieved, as well as on the design and simulation of the proton extraction scheme, the focusing system and the meson transfer line. The ERC granted ENUBET project aims at developing the technologies to reduce by a factor $\sim$10 the systematics in neutrino fluxes from conventional beams, allowing measuring the $\nu_e$ (and $\overline{\nu}_e$) cross section with a 1% precision, in the region of interest for future oscillation experiments looking for CP violation.
