Hubert Curien, St. Etienne) ; Capoen, Bruno (PhLAM, Villeneuve d'Ascq) et al.
We evaluate the temperature effect on the X-ray radiation-induced luminescence (RIL) of differently doped silica fibers obtained via the sol-gel route. Previous investigations showed that these optical materials exhibit interesting dosimetry properties, such as very good detection capabilities and linear response over a large range of dose rate. Humidity-insensitive optical fibers for distributed sensing applications
/ Neves, Tiago F P (CERN ; Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Scherino, Lorenzo (CERN) ; Bernard, Rémy (PhLAM, Villeneuve d'Ascq) ; Bouet, Monika (PhLAM, Villeneuve d'Ascq) ; Pastre, Aymeric (PhLAM, Villeneuve d'Ascq) ; Magalhães, Regina (Alcala de Henares U.) ; Martin-Lopez, Sonia (Alcala de Henares U.) ; Martins, Hugo F (Madrid, Inst. Estructura Materia) ; Petagna, Paolo (CERN) ; Thévenaz, Luc (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne)
Humidity is a critical environmental factor in various applications, and its temperature dependence must be considered when developing thermo-hygrometer fiber sensors. The optical fibers that constitute the sensor must have a temperature reference, which should be resistant to humidity to avoid cross-sensitivities. [...]

Can Highly Oxidized Organics Contribute to Atmospheric New Particle Formation?
/ Ortega, Ismael K (PhLAM, Villeneuve d'Ascq ; Carnegie Mellon U. (main)) ; Donahue, Neil M (Carnegie Mellon U. (main)) ; Kurtén, Theo (U. Helsinki (main)) ; Kulmala, Markku (Helsinki U.) ; Focsa, Cristian (PhLAM, Villeneuve d'Ascq) ; Vehkamäki, Hanna (Helsinki U.)
Highly oxidized organic molecules may play a critical role in new-particle formation within Earth’s atmosphere along with sulfuric acid, which has long been considered as a key compound in this process. Here we explore the interactions of these two partners, using quantum chemistry to find the formation free energies of heterodimers and trimers as well as the fastest evaporation rates of (2,2) tetramers. The optical emission from the 5d – 4f allowed transition of Pr$^{3+}$ ions embedded in sol-gel silica is investigated for High Energy Physics applications requiring fast scintillating materials. A complete and detailed characterization of the optical, scintillation and radiation hardness properties of Pr-doped silica is carried out employing different experimental techniques including steady-state and time-resolved photo-luminescence, radio- and thermo-luminescence, scintillation and optical absorption.
