Protection Layers Design for the High Luminosity LHC Full Remote Alignment System / Fernández Adiego, Borja (CERN) ; Blanco Viñuela, Enrique (CERN) ; Germinario, Andrea (CERN) ; Mainaud Durand, Helene (CERN) ; Sosin, Mateusz (CERN)
The Full Remote Alignment System (FRAS) is a complex measurement, alignment and control system designed to remotely align components of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) following its High Luminosity upgrade. The purpose of FRAS is to guarantee optimal alignment of the strong focusing magnets and associated components near the experimental interaction points, while at the same time limiting the radiation dose to which surveyors in the LHC tunnel are subjected. Towards Automatic Generation of Fail-Safe PLC Code Compliant with Functional Safety Standards / Germinario, Andrea (CERN) ; Blanco Viñuela, Enrique (CERN) ; Fernández Adiego, Borja (CERN)
In agreement with the IEC 61511 functional safety standard, fail-safe application programs should be written using a Limited Variability Language (LVL), that has a limited number of operations and data types, such as LD (Ladder Diagrams) or FBD (Function Block Diagrams) for safety PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) languages. The specification of safety instrumented systems, as part of the Safety Requirements Specification document, shall unambiguously define the logic of the program, creating a one-to-one relationship between code and specification. [...]

Cause-and-Effect Matrix Specifications for Safety Critical Systems at CERN / Fernández Adiego, Borja (CERN) ; Blanco Viñuela, Enrique (CERN) ; Bonet, Mateus (Santa Catarina U.) ; Charrondiere, Maryline (CERN) ; Hamisch, Henrique (Santa Catarina U.) ; Speroni, Roberto (CERN) ; de Queiroz, Max (Santa Catarina U.)
One of the most critical phases in the development of a Safety Instrumented System (SIS) is the functional specification of the Safety Instrumented Functions (SIFs). This step is carried out by a multidisciplinary team of process, controls and safety experts. [...]

Towards the Optimization of the Safety Life-Cycle for Safety Instrumented Systems / Fernández Adiego, Borja (CERN) ; Blanco Viñuela, Enrique (CERN) ; Otto, Thomas (CERN) ; Speroni, Roberto (CERN) ; de Assis Schmidt, Gustavo (CERN)
The design and development of Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) according to the IEC 61511 standard is a long and costly process. Although the standard gives recommendations and guidelines for each phase of the safety life-cycle, implementing them is not a simple task. [...]

Safety instrumented systems and the AWAKE plasma control as a use case / Blanco Viñuela, Enrique (CERN) ; Braunmueller, Hans (Munich, Max Planck Inst.) ; Fernández Adiego, Borja (CERN) ; Speroni, Roberto (CERN)
Safety is likely the most critical concern in many process industries, yet there is a general uncertainty on the proper engineering to reduce the risks and ensure the safety of persons or material at the same time as providing the process control system. Some of the reasons for this misperception are unclear requirements, lack of functional safety engineering knowledge or incorrect protection functionalities attributed to the BPCS (Basic Process Control System). PLCverif: A Tool to Verify PLC Programs Based on Model Checking Techniques / Darvas, Dániel (CERN) ; Blanco Vinuela, Enrique (CERN) ; Fernández Adiego, Borja (CERN)
Model checking is a promising formal verification method to complement testing in order to improve the quality of PLC programs. However, its application typically needs deep expertise in formal methods. [...]

Formal verification techniques are widely used in critical industries to minimize software flaws. However, despite the benefits and recommendations of the functional safety standards, such as IEC 61508 and IEC 61511, formal verification is not yet a common practice in the process industry and large scientific installations. Applying Model Checking to Highly-Configurable Safety Critical Software: The SPS-PPS PLC Program / Fernández Adiego, Borja (CERN) ; Blanco Viñuela, Enrique (CERN) ; Havart, Frederic (CERN) ; Ladzinski, Tomasz (CERN) ; Lopez-Miguel, Ignacio D (CERN) ; Tournier, Jean-Charles (CERN)
An important aspect of many particle accelerators is the constant evolution and frequent configuration changes that are needed to perform the experiments they are designed for. This often leads to the design of configurable software that can absorb these changes and perform the required control and protection actions. [...]

Renovation of the SPS Personnel Protection System: A Configurable Approach / Ladzinski, Tomasz (CERN) ; Fernández Adiego, Borja (CERN) ; Havart, Frederic (CERN)
The renovation of the SPS Personnel Protection System (PPS) comprises the installation of industrial access control solutions and the implementation of a new safety instrumented system tailored to the particular needs of the accelerator. The SPS has been a working horse of the CERN accelerator complex for many decades and its configuration has changed through the many years of operation. [...]
