We discuss the possibility of creating novel research tools by producing and storing highly relativistic beams of highly ionised atoms in the CERN accelerator complex, and by exciting their atomic degrees of freedom with lasers to produce high-energy photon beams. Intensity of such photon beams would be by several orders of magnitude higher than offered by the presently operating light sources, in the particularly interesting γ-ray energy domain of 0.1–400MeV. The Gamma Factory initiative proposes to develop novel research tools at CERN by producing, accelerating and storing highly relativistic, partially stripped ion beams in the SPS and LHC storage rings. By exciting the electronic degrees of freedom of the stored ions with lasers, high-energy narrow-band photon beams will be produced by properly collimating the secondary radiation that is peaked in the direction of ions' propagation. Gamma Factory
/ Krasny, Mieczyslaw Witold (LPNHE, Paris ; CERN)
At the core of the Gamma Factory (GF) proposal was the identification of an enormous, but thus far hidden, potential of the CERN accelerator infrastructure in conducting a new research programme at the crossroads of fundamental, particle, nuclear, atomic, and applied physics. All these disciplines could jointly profit from the novel research tools which can be created by the Gamma Factory facility. [...]

This contribution discusses the possibility of broadening the present CERN research programme making use of a novel concept of light source. The proposed, Partially Stripped Ion beam driven, light source is the backbone of the Gamma Factory (GF) initiative. [...]

Account of the baryonic feedback effect in γ-ray measurements of intergalactic magnetic fields

Intergalactic magnetic fields in the voids of the large-scale structure can be probed via measurements of secondary gamma-ray emission from gamma-ray interactions with extragalactic background light. Lower bounds on the magnetic field in the voids were derived from the non-detection of this emission. [...]
