Applying the frozen-spin technique in a compact3 T solenoid will enable a search for the muon electricdipole moment (EDM) with unprecedented sensitivity, improving uponthe current direct limit by approximately a factor of 1000. Afterinjection of a selected muon, a pulsed magnetic field will reduceits longitudinal momentum sufficiently to be confined within astatic weakly-focusing magnetic field and maintain a closed circularorbit. Preparations for a search of the muon EDM at PSI

Electric dipole moments (EDMs) of fundamental particles violate time invariance and the combined symmetry of charge and parity (CP). The existence of a large muon EDM (muEDM) is made plausible by tensions with Standard Model predictions for semileptonic decays of heavy meson measured at LHCb, BaBar, and Belle, as well as the muon’s anomalous magnetic moment (AMM). Optically pumped Cs magnetometers enabling a high-sensitivity search for the neutron electric dipole moment
/ Abel, C. (Sussex U.) ; Afach, S. (PSI, Villigen ; Zurich, ETH) ; Ayres, N.J. (Sussex U. ; Zurich, ETH) ; Ban, G. (Caen U.) ; Bison, G. (PSI, Villigen) ; Bodek, K. (Jagiellonian U.) ; Bondar, V. (PSI, Villigen ; Zurich, ETH ; Leuven U.) ; Chanel, E. (U. Bern, AEC) ; Chiu, P.-J (PSI, Villigen ; Zurich, ETH) ; Crawford, C.B. (Kentucky U.) et al.
An array of sixteen laser-pumped scalar Cs magnetometers was part of the neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) experiment taking data at the Paul Scherrer Institute in 2015 and 2016. It was deployed to measure the gradients of the experiment's magnetic field and to monitor their temporal evolution. [...]

At the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI), we are currently working on the development of a high-precision apparatus with the aim of searching for the muon electric dipole moment (EDM) with unprecedented sensitivity. The underpinning principle of this experiment is the frozen-spin technique, a method that suppresses the spin precession due to the anomalous magnetic moment, thereby enhancing the signal-to-noise ratio for EDM signals. Permanent electric dipole moments (EDMs) are excellent probes of physics beyond the Standard Model, especially on new sources of CP violation. The muon EDM has recently attracted significant attention due to discrepancies in the magnetic anomaly of the muon, as well as potential violations of lepton-flavor universality in B-meson decays. We present the result of an experiment to measure the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the neutron at the Paul Scherrer Institute using Ramsey's method of separated oscillating magnetic fields with ultracold neutrons (UCN). Our measurement stands in the long history of EDM experiments probing physics violating time reversal invariance. [...]
